Well I guess in a way its good this is only happening with me. It means that its my computer and not the Air in general. I'm going to go into the store tomorrow and have them fix it. I just hope they dont say its normal!

I already have the latest flash. Its not spotlighting at all. Now the fans run 6000+ rpm constantly even after restarting and resetting the SMC. They wont go below 5500 rpm with nothing open.

I got a dud that I'm stuck with.

Same problems with my 13" Ultimate. Went to the apple Store twice with it. They could find nothing wrong. Basically they said leave it with us for a few days and we'll run it or live with it and buy Apple Care. I sold it.

"Buy Apple Care" ???

It already has a year's worth of AppleCare - why would they tell you to buy it?

I always crack up when I read the things people post - makes me wonder, A) did you actually take the machine to the store, and B) do you actually even own the computer you allege to own.

A. Twice
B. Well not any more. Sold it. I do have pictures though.

They recommended Apple Care as I had expressed my concern about how the computer would be long term running hot and fans spinning up all the time.

Strange one would think I would post about a computer I didn't own or never owned. Would seem like a huge waste of my time

Open Activity Monitor and see if something is running in the background and causing the fans to run.

goodness me - don't freak out.

call Apple, tell them of your issue and if it's not fixable over the phone they'll send you another for an item so new.

you may get asked to go to an authorised Apple repairer for verification if there's one within coo-ee of you, but that's a small inconvenience.

you have a warranty on the thing plus free phone support for 90 days -

use it and be happy. :D

Then I try playing youtube, hulu, and netflix. This thing cant handle HD!! The fans turn on to 6400+ rpm the entire clip/movie. They're on full blast and I cant even hear the clip. If that wasnt bad enough, the stutter is insanely annoying. I wait for it to buffer yet it still keeps lagging. Forget 1080p, I cant even watch 720p.

There must be another issue somewhere. I watch Hulu+ and NetFlix HD on my 11" all the time without performance issues. My fan does go up to about 3500-4000 rpm sometimes, but it is relatively quiet even at those speeds.

As someone else posted, did you update the OS to 10.6.7 through the system update or using the combo update? For some reason (not yet fully understood) using either one of these methods to upgrade to 10.6.7 on a late 2010 MBA has been shown to negatively impact video performance. The only way to upgrade to 10.6.7 without impacting your video performance is using the incremental 10.6.7 upgrade found HERE.

If you did upgrade to 10.6.7 using system update or the combo update and you took a backup first, restore from backup and install 10.6.7 using the incremental update above. If you didn't take a backup you can always do a clean install of Mac OS using the USB stick that came with your MBA and then incrementally upgrade to 10.6.7.

If it's a dud, an Apple store will take it back and give you a replacement within 14 days of purchase, even though you bought it from MacMall. I know from personal experience.

@OP

1) Saying you are disappointed in your Ferrari because you bought contaminated gas is misdirecting blame. Flash is horrifically bad software that takes 2 - 4x more CPU to play video than a player like VLC.

2) The Macbook Air is an ultraportable. Remember the thermal limitations of having a unit so thin and small.

3) Install Click to flash for Safari or Flash block for Firefox to stop a lot of problems.

In short, if you want to base your entire Macintosh experience on how very poorly written software runs on the machine, good luck with that.

I guess you missed the part of the thread (i.e., all of it) where everyone said their Airs could handle the same thing just fine and the OP is going to get it exchanged?

Add me to the list - I have a 13" 1.83GHz Air and it handles HD Flash video just fine.

I'll tell you disappointing. Using a performa from back in the 80's. When apple stock was around $6 a share. Now that was the shitz.

I have the 13 ultimate and I do not have flash installed. I use chrome for flash browsing.

If i watch any flash video AT ALL, the fans will kick up to full speed. Sometimes just browsing will kick them up. Very annoying and nothing I do stops it.

Do I need to open the machine and apply thermal grease:eek:?

OK, this sucks. Went to you tube on safari and enabled the html 5 trail. Started watching high def video, NOT A BUDGE on the fan 2K rpm. Flash really sucks.

What version of flash is in chrome? Am I better off installing 10.2 and ditching chrome??

I've had my macbook air since november and I've experienced none of the issues you mention. Definitely get it fixed/bring it to apple store.

You MacBook Air has a faster graphics processor than your 3 year old MacBook Pro and only a slightly slower CPU, so it should be fine once Spotlight indexes everything.

A 3-year-old MBP would be the last Aluminum MBP before the Unibody revamp in late-08.

So that would mean a 8600M GPU. The 320M isn't faster than the 8600M

However, this:

...perhaps you are running content that isn't optimized for GPU acceleration. Maybe send us a link to a video that isn't running properly and we can see if it works for us.

Is the best idea I've seen in this thread so far.
