I agree that the iPhone 14 is the worst upgrade I've seen since the beginning of the iphone. The "normal" iPhone 14 is basically the 13 Pro with even less features lol. Its really a joke seriously. And for the Pro versions, there's almost nothing new worth it for me. Always on display? Never understood the need of this when you just have to tap the screen to see your things. The new "notch" is even worst compared to the current one. It seems way more intrusive for full screen videos or games. The only good thing is the new top screen brightness but that's about it for me.

At least the XS gen introduced the new big XS Max and that was enough to justify an upgrade for me at that time.

I guess Apple is making baby steps until they unleash there full screen beast. I like the dynamic island feature & no SIM card.

But I won’t be upgrading my iPhone 12 Pro Max just yet. Until something big comes which based on the rumours it’s either the iPhone 16 or 18 pro max or both.

Removing the physical sim card
No 8K video recording for future proofing videos.
MUCH HIGHER prices in other countries outside of America
The notch has become a big pill blocking the screen
the regular 14's has last year's processor
no improvements to the speaker system
no titanium to reduce the weight
the camera examples look very bad for such an upgrade
The iPhone 7 to iPhone 8 was a useful/bigger upgrade :( we waited for one year for this? and LOOK AT THE TRADE IN PRICES  they lowered it without any warnings and out of the blue. I was planning on trading it in but this has never happened the same week of a new release and the iPads aren't even updated yet and they just lowered it as well.
THANKS TIM APPLE FOR SCR3WING US!!
Antennagate. Nothing can beat that for worst ever.

Bold statement! Most people view new releases in terms of what requirements they have; I have an iPhone 13 Pro and there is nothing that entices me to a 14, but does that mean it's the "WORST & Biggest Disappointment in the history of the iPhones"? I don't think so... mainly becuase there are a few new features and previous released have been simply chip upgrades.

I was interested in all 3 announcements yesterday and none excited me. Not hating on Apple - just none of the new releases hit my requirements so I am still happy with what I have - as Frederick Dodson said “Want what you have, and then you can have what you want.”

Agree.

I also don't understand what kind of innovation Apple is supposed to bring to something that has become as utilitarian as smartphones? And year after year?

Yes, Apple could do foldable displays. And could upgrade SoC even more every single year.

But to what end? Are completely new designs practical? Is Apple lagging behind with speeds compared to the competition on any of the smartphones from the last 2-3 years?

The big "issue" is not that Apple isn't doing anything exciting anymore but that smartphone tech has reach a peak and the competition isn't giving them any reasons to "go all out" to impress consumers.
Foldables are great and applaud Samsung and others for taking the leap. But I am honestly not in search of a solution to a problem that honestly does not exist with the current Candy Bar style
of the iPhone. I thought I needed PIP desperately in YouTube app on the iPad so I could browse while watching a video. Yet I rarely use it.

There really is no major utility for me now where i need something like the Galaxy Fold 4. Maybe someday I will. It’s a large market and everybody can play and win.

Regular models? Yeah. I see nil reason to not just get the 13 for $100 less. The 14 is effectively the same phone with negligible camera upgrades and marginally faster graphics. Think Apple are banking on the plus to really drive sales this cycle. Pro models? This is a decent enough upgrade by recent standards. 13 Pro to 14 Pro is predictably pointless, but coming from a 12 Pro and earlier there is enough there.
I agree. Coming from an iPhone 7 this will be like coming from a state of the ark steam driven typewriter to something that is light years ahead. Only other improvement that I could have wished for is USB-C for charging like my iPad Air 4

Nope. In terms of the 14 Pro, it’s actually up there with the best Apple announcements, it’s up there with the original, the 4 and X

The standard 14 is not in that league for sure, however it’s far from being the weakest upgrade. The 6S and 11 were far weaker upgrades over their respective predecessors

OP what phone are you on now? If you got a 13pro/13PM then the 14 series could feel underwhelming. If you’re on older phone, situation is different. I know a few people upgrading to 14pro who are still on iPhone X. That would be a huge upgrade.
8-plus user here … debating 14 or Pro.

I’ll probably miss the home button more than anything else!

I think this was the best presentation in years, just the watch ultra, in both the watch and iPhone pro areas they maintained prices and gave much better values

This is actually the most excited I've been about a new iPhone in years. The base models are meh, but the Pros are a huge upgrade this year! I guess you can't make everyone happy.
What exactly is new? Dynamic island. 48mp who cares at this point. And always on display. So that’s a new device? Looks like a poor man’s iPhone “S” update.

I don’t even think this was the smallest iPhone upgrade, I think that still goes to the XS from the X.
Outside of the processor, and maybe a small camera update I can’t remember a single thing that changed with that phone.
Oh yeah, I remember, it came in gold.
That’s about it.
But yes, small year over year upgrades in the smart phone market are pretty much inevitable at this point, it’s a mature market.
The upcoming galaxy S 23 is supposed to retain basically the same everything as the S 22, which was very similar to the S 21.
The iPhone is exactly the same.
It’s basically at the stage the Mac is at, yes, there’s upgrades every year, but nothing that’s going to change your life.
Mostly processor and camera upgrades and that’s about it.
I think it’s a lot easier to go about this by not thinking of getting a new phone every year.
Don’t think of the iPhone 14 as an upgrade from the 13, think of it as an upgrade from the 11 or the XR.
For the people still on those phones, it’s going to be a decent upgrade.

6S was one of the most compelling upgrades ever, SoC-wise.
Just look at how it aged compared to the 6.
6S is being retired now from software updates, together with the 7, and 6 has been retired together with the 5S. Says a lot.

Honestly, I don't know what you expect. How much further can phones really go? I'm sure there is stuff the could of done right now, but they save some stuff for next year, or the year after, so that they can have something new about it. Sure, it sucks for us the consumer in a way, I mean who doesn't want the best of the best yesterday? But in the end, they are a business, and they plan to be a business for a while. They simply can't give us everything we want right now, without taking from their future profits and models.

The competition is offering foldables, actually on their 4th generation by now, and Apple has been offering almost zero motives to buy a new iPhone, for exactly 5 years now.
Their workforce can't be bothered to actually go back to their workplace to innovate their products, they'd rather use COVID as an excuse to stay at home with smart working.

Is that what you are going to do, or your advice to others? Because to me I see no reason to pay less to get less for $100.

That’s the beauty of competition. Buy what suits you the best. I’m going to order the purple pro max.

It's hard to say what's the most disappointing at launch. Looking back we can compare what has been a let down more easily.

I kinda like dynamic island. As an investor I like the Pro differentiation. I'm more worried about the watch but I don't use it so I'll hold my reservations. The presentation had me worried. As a customer, I don't like how the regular 14 uses the same chip as the 13. We'll see if the A15 gets one less year of updates vs. the A16. That would be a tough one to accept.

So if I have an ATT prepaid plan with a SIM card, how would I activate that plan on a new SIM less phone?
Go into an AT&T corporate store and ask them for an eSIM QR code, it's going to come on a little plastic card like a physical SIM used to. Scan the QR code and you should be able to activate the eSIM

I still think that A15 and A16 are going to be phased out at the same time. They are largely the same chip.

It really wasn’t. One new feature which nobody used and was subsequently deprecated from 2018 (force touch), and that stupid Live Photos thing that was actually a bad thing and messed up countless photos for millions of people until is was quietly binned somewhat later. Same design, no interesting features. This was also at the tail end of the era when phones were supposed to be a significant upgrade every year

Anyone into tech enough to even know or care what chip is in the phone would have upgraded long before either the 6 or 6S became unsupported, making the point about longevity moot

The 6 was one of the most significant upgrades from the 5S, however the least significant upgrade between any two consecutive iPhones is surely 6 to 6S
