hi, i got my 27" i5 imac last week and yup its showing as an sdhc on system profiler......i dont know how apple can get out of this one? I understand that not many of us have the new cards yet to test this however that isnt the point right? i got my imac to be future proof for at least a couple of years and i can see high capacity storage taking off so if the new imacs dont have these then i expect some form of compensation! (a nice new magic trackpad for free would be nice haha)

After managing to find some time to give AppleCare a call today, here is the outcome.

Firstly I explained my situation:
iMac Core i7, bought over the weekend has Card Reader Type listed as SDHC under the System Profiler. Checked out Tech Specs on Website and the Card Reader is listed as SDXC.

AppleCare Operator's Response:
Your iMac's Serial lists your machine as Mid 2010, you seem to have the latest in hardware revisions that Apple puts into their machines. I'm surprised that your machine lists your Card Reader as SDHC instead of SDXC. Did you purchase your machine online or through a store?

Response: Through a store

AppleCare Operator: Since your purchase is less than 14 days old, please find some time to pop into the store and ask them how they intend to resolve the problem. If they refer you back to us (AppleCare) I will provide you with a Case Number so that when you call back we will have reference of what has been discussed today and if further action is required we will put you through to a senior advisor who will then help you resolve your problem.

So after 20mins on the phone, I now have to find time to go to the Apple store and have a chat with them.

I'll let you know how things go.

Definitely keep us updated please! Thanks! :)

Mine also specifies SDHC in the system profiler (2010 27"). I'd wager at this point that they all do.

So either the specs are wrong, all the machines made so far have been made with the incorrect part, or there will be a firmware update coming to us at some point.

Or looking at it from another angle..

Either that or all of the 2009 models have the same reader that reads the SDXC cards too.

How large are the SDXC cards? What size do they start at?

Update:

Biggest SD memory card I have around the house:

I take it the SDXC cards are much larger?

Same hardware as the '09 iMacs

My 2009 27" i7 iMac's SD reader has the exact same Product ID and Vendor ID as the OP's 2010 iMac does. I'd say it's pretty likely that the only thing that distinguishes SDHC readers from SDXC readers - at least in the iMacs - is software. It appears the hardware is the same between the '09 and '10 iMacs.

Perhaps, but my Mac mini 2010 has a different vendor ID, and says it's SDXC, as you can see on page 2 of this thread...

Fair enough. What I meant to specifically say is that the SDHC hardware in the last two generations of iMacs appears to be the same -- I edited my original post to clarify.

@dkly007, Have you have a chance to visit a local store? :D

Won't do him any good. Genius employees are utterly useless when it comes to the stuff that goes on behind Apple's doors. Nobody will be able to answer his questions unless Apple comes out and says something.

It Works In Windows

I just popped my 32GB SD card in while I was running W7 Ultimate 64-Bit and it 100% popped up and let me transfer almost 32GB worth of files from it to the Boot camp partition and it was quick.
Now write speeds were much much slower than upload for some reason...? no idear why?

But in OSX the SD card shows up but says the disk could not mount.....
I am guessing its a software issues in Mac OSX
Apple says My new Imac is supposed to have a SDXC and it does not. I think they could have a new IPHONE 4 debacle on their hands.
If they do not have a firmware update soon Im gonna ask for a refund.

Well, 32GB card isn't a SDXC, it's SDHC. Also, i believe if the card reader is SDHC based, a firmware update won't make it a SDXC reader.

But it's really odd that even the 32GB card of yours can't be mounted...

What file system is the card formatted with? That would be a reason that OSX cannot read it, but W7 can.

The package that I purchased the card with says "HIGH SPEED SDXC " And I got it from Newegg.com and the listing says it a high speed sdxc card and not a regular SD card.
Also it was formatted in exFAT so it does work with both mac and W7.
This card shows up on my new Mac mini as "SDXC" and mounts perfect.:apple:

Could you please post a link to the product listing from Newegg.com? I couldn't find any SDXC card that is 32GB on newegg.com...

It it is indeed a SDXC card, then i guess the hardware is there but the firmware it not up to date as you said. Do you happen to have any other macs? mbp or previous generation iMacs.. Could you try mounting it on? That's if you have any other macs.. other than your new iMac and new mac mini.. Thanks!

I have had this card for 2 months and it is no loger available on Newegg. It was made by Scandisk.
This is what it says on the packaging.

Class Rating - Class 10: 10 MB/sec. minimum data transfer rate

Bus Interface Mode - Version 1, SDR102, up to 104MB/sec.

Compliant - with the SD Card Association card 3.00 specification

Secure - built-in write-protect switch prevents accidental data loss

Compatible - with SDXC host devices; cross compatible with SDHC and standard SD-enabled devices/readers that are SDXC enabled

And like I said before I shows up on my 1 month old Mac Mini 2.66ghz "SDXC" and does mount. But not on my Imac.....ANNOYING. It works in Windows 7 though on the Imac.

If it is formatted in exFat and can be read on your mac mini, then maybe we do not have SDXC readers. Have you run upgrades on your OS yet? Maybe the driver for reading the exFat file system is not installed yet?

Managed to pop into the store.

They had a pre-update Ci7 iMac on display, I checked the System Profiler but it didn't list the Card Reader at all. Jumped onto another 27" iMac (Core i3), checked out the System Profiler: Card Reader Type: SDHC

Shot the question over to a sales guy that was patrolling the showroom and he had no clue. Took me up to the the Genius bar and the "Genius" didn't know about it at all. Both of them went out the back, came out later and told me that System Profiler is at times Glitchy and that the specs of my machine will be what is listed on the internet.

hmmzz, no real solution provided there. The mac Mini that i purchased at the same time as my iMac has the Card Reader listed as SDXC type.

I dont have an SDXC card to test this out with.

I read over in the Mac Mini forum that the SD card on those is not part of the typical USB bus, so maybe that actually has a different SD reader than the MBP and iMacs. Does not tell us if ours are SDXC or not, but explains the different description.

yea.. if you actually look at the teardown pictures from ifixit, the parts definitely look different between iMac and the new mac mini.

For the previous generation iMac, Card Reader is under "USB" so..

Hardware --> USB --> USB High Speed Bus --> Internal Memory Card Reader

Doesn't sound like a SDXC card... if it's really a SDXC card, you should see a SDXC logo on the card itself... otherwise, you will see SDHC logo on it

Just got my 64GB ScanDisk SDXC (yes says sdxc on the package) From Amazon today, cost $218.99
Shows up in my 2.66ghz mac mini as 15mbps transfer SDXC card
Shows up in my 27"Imac 2.8 i5 Quad as 15mbps transfer SDHC card....

Honestly I think its a software issue.
It has let me transfer 50GB of .mkv files (blu rays) and it did it in about 15 min
from my Imac to my mac mini and so forth.

And to Boot.
I just installed 10.6.4 on it and it boots up, seems to run just as fast as the 5400rpm 320GB hard drive in the Mac mini.
