Update

Just a little update for you guys....

I decided to keep the Imac I have.... the problem doesn't really bother me that much anymore, I've managed to get used to it.....

The computer in general otherwise is great. The only major problem I have with it is when I need to compare different variations of things and it changes them depending on where they are on screen.....

I'm lucky enough to be able to proof my colors and brightness on a different monitor before sending stuff to print, so as long as I can get it close I can deal with it later.

It's sad to hear that apple hasn't fixed or addressed it as a significant problem yet.... I would think they would be more concerned.... but there's probably nothing they could do now that wouldn't cost a lot and probably would need a large scale overhaul of the computer to fix, I just want to know what causes it.....

Not to make light of your problem, and I'm convinced that your line of work make accuracy mandatory, but for me, I just assume another floater has crossed into the vitreous.

Life goes on, and some are blind.

Meh.

a late reply

Yes. I've had similar problems. I have the old white 24" Imac. First time I bought it, there was a dead pixel, so I had it exchaged for a new one. A few days later, not only do I see a dead pixel on the replacement machine, I see dark 'rays'...literally in the shape of a cartoon sun spreading downward from the center portion of the top edge of the display. My main concern at this point is that it's going to get worse. It could be my imagination, but the dark rays seem to getting darker and more defined.

Understandably upset, I wen to the Mac website and left a less than stellar review of this product on one of their user forums. My post was promptly removed as Apple did not want anyone reading the post of an angry Imac owner questioning the production quality of one of their biggest products.

thankfully, I bought applecare. I will keep having this stupid computer replaced over and over until there are no dark rays. You should do the same if you haven't already.

Is this still a problem? I'm going to pick up a 24" iMac in a couple of weeks. It's a bit ridiculous to think that they have to have known about this issue for nearly a year and not done anything about it.

There is a small percentage of imperfect LCD's that get past QA into the field. Most are fine. This forum is a site many use to look for solutions to problems and as a result you will see lots of talk about problems.

The last 2 generations of the 20" iMac have a lower quality screen then the 24" iMac. The older White 20" iMacs are said to have very good screens.

In comparison to the 24" iMac, the new 20" iMacs have a smaller viewing angle and are 18 bit (262,144 colors) as opposed to the 24" having 24 bit (16,777,216 colors) pixel depth. Though I think most people would be hard pressed to see the color difference, the viewing angle limits are discernible.

Is this still a problem?

Haven't commented on a thread in about a year, but I do have two 24" iMacs, one aluminum and one white plastic for 8 months. My white was perfect when bought, the aluminum, I traded in several times. The last screen was a keeper, both work perfectly, no problems and no viruses yet. I can't say whether there is still a problem that is of any significance today. I did notice some 24" screens at the Apple store had slight gradient issues, but not most, can't say for the 20".

You may want to discuss your concerns with the store manager and see what they say and will offer you. Otherwise, the product is really nice and the Apple reps and customer service have been great in my experience and I put them through the mill.

Hope that helps some.:)

yeah , that's why some people here exchanged it over 10 times and still get the screen issue... issues like noisy hard drive, dvd not burning, mouse not working are rare, but screen issues with imacs are not rare. I`ve been in the store and noticed that all of them have the same issue. Many people dont even realize they have screen problems cause they are unnoticeable unless you start looking for them.

As this thread got me quite worried up until my iMac came today I'd just like to say that my 24" iMac does have a very slight darkening towards the bottom corners but it's only noticeably when the screen is showing a pure white image.

While I work in Photoshop/Flash (admittedly not professionally) I think that these corners are so far from my work area they aren't really going to affect my work enough for me to wait another week for a replacement.

It's my first Mac purchase and so far I'm converted!

Not only that we've had some plumbers in the house today, and he was so impressed he was going to go look at one after he finished today! :D

Like I said a small percentage.

Answer me this since it seems to apply here: if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it,does it still make a noise?

Point is that some people are anal about their displays and some are not.If most people don't see the display as having a problem, does it mean that it is not a problem?

It took two iMac's for me to get a good one, but it was not because of any backlight issue. It was a wealth of stuck pixels.

Are there bad ones out there? Sure, but it is a small percentage.

is it really a small percentage? or are there just trees falling on deaf ears?

i have yet to see a 20" or 24" iMac from 2007 or 2008 that are at least on par with the previous white 24" screens... the quality that apple use to uphold just doesn't exist anymore... it's as simple as that... i'm just glad i have an iMac with a bad screen and not a MacBook or cracking iPhone 3G...

I absolutely love my 24" iMac from Jan 2008. I may not be as picky as some, but it looks great to me and it has been flawless.

I purchased an Alu 24" iMac the first week of August and it has been perfect (in my eyes) and Apple's customer satisfaction ratings for 2008 are higher than ever. I've been perhaps very lucky in that my MacBook has also been perfect as has my PowerMac. With that said I've owned Dell and IBM notebooks that had to be sent in for repairs. This is just my experience though.

I do believe there is only a small percentage of defective iMacs out there, but there is a larger percentage of very particular iMac owners are looking for the perfect iMac and tend to come online to find answers to help them obtain the perfect iMac.

Does that mean all iMac owners who are very particular about their iMac's are not encountering real issues? No. But I believe, as stated above, that a great many of them find things wrong with their iMac that the normal iMac owner (2-3 std dev under the bell shaped curve) would not have a problem with or notice.

Just remember there is no such thing as the perfect iMac. iMacs are made by imperfect beings and as such are imperfect themselves. There are only iMacs with various levels of shortcomings that you can either live with or live without. That determination is up to each individual person and whatever each individual person decides is right for them, but that determination cannot be applied to anyone besides yourself.

it's just troubling to see that while apple is in the midst of winning over millions of new users, they decide to try and save a few crumbs by installing (what i consider) the cheapest displays i've ever seen in my life on their beautifully crafted computers.

the original white 24" iMac screen was actually flawless, just like all of apple's cinema displays. it's not at all unrealistic for the HUGE artist communities to be offended by these new screens... in some cases (where color and contrast balance is involved) they are impossible to use for accurate results. it just seems that apple has forgotten that it's not just college students who use their computers. and is it really any wonder why companies like Adobe are now choosing to release their creative suite apps for PC months before the mac version?

anyway *rant over*...

oh yeah... there's a new app called Light that people can use to change the color of their display in full screen mode to test for these screen issues.

What's the latest on this issue? My 24" has a really annoying yellowing towards the bottom of the display, and I'm wondering if it's worth trying to get this fixed whilst it's under warranty?

By the looks of things, the complaints about this have become far less frequent, or have folks just given up on this now?

I bought mine in January and never had an issue with the screen.

my gf has just bought a 24" imac and she obviously has the yellow gradient problem in the center 1/3 of the screen. All of the 24" screen i've seen at maybe 3 mac stores all have this problem also, though it is harder to see in a store that bright, it is there. Also all the imacs at best buy had the issue also.

Most people wont see this problem nor care, those are the people i dont want calibrating my set. But come on, even a 200$ dell screen doesnt even have this problem. And has better backlighting uniformity also.

We will have to wait for the (probably) white LED lit 24in iMacs to rectify this situation. I have gone the Mac Pro route after having been unsuccessful in procuring a decent iMac.

i've told her to just get mac pro but she really doesnt want a bulky tower computer any more, i dont blame her. Maybe if the mac mini had the same specs she can pair that up with an external screen. I never thought about the imacs not bieng led, oh well, hopefully they can update the imacs soon, not really sure what to do at this point other than return the set.
