Hello forumers!

I Live in the South Coast of Norway. I've been working on PC's forever, and purchased my first Mac ever. The 24" Imac was purchased on mars 25, but it don't arrived before april 22. (that was a long wait *phew!*)

specs are:

24" Imac
3.06 MHZ Dual processor
4GB DDR3 memory
1TB Harddrive
ATI HD 4850 GPU.

Read around the internet that there was Trouble with Freezing, but my iMac works like a charm. Totally loving it <3
are you using wifi?

i have had my new 3.06ghz ati 4850 imac for less than a day, thought it was fine but it just froze while using iphoto and scrolling through a page of pictures. iphoto was maximised at the time. (width only)

my temps are all fairly low and the mac had only been on for 2 minuites.

using wifi and bluetooth, all software is upto date

gpu 48c
cpu 29c
northbridge 58c
psu 53c

been following this post since i ordered mine with fingers crossed, oh well!

make that two freezes, did it again 5 mins after posting this, all i was doing was using firefox....

tried to call apple at 21:45 as their website in the uk says they are open till 22:00 but the answer message said they close at 19:45! the cheek of it!)

will call to complain on monday

EDIT: i just did a full repair of permissions in safe mode (whatever its called on mac) and it corrected quite a few errors. surely that cant really fix the problem tho?

called Apple today after having my 5th freeze on wifi/ w/bluetooth

guy said it was a minor glitch in the system and had my reset SMC and PRAM then restarted in safe mode and restarted again. Said to call back if it happened again.

Atleast i have a case number now, but i really feel like this is a software issue since all of the replacements i'm seeing have issues too.

I would love to plug in ethernet and wait, but my time capsule is on the second floor, and no wired internet connection downstairs in my office.

I'm going to call each time it freezes now using my case number.

Demand a new machine - only when the shipping costs of replacements and returns are eating away at the profit they make on these machines will they start to sort out the problem as a priority. Every time I get a faulty machine I will ship it back for a replacement. Currently waiting for the third to arrive.

the guy you spoke to was clueless. it was probably his cop-out method for scenarios that he's not sure how to fix.

call for your replacement asap, because it will freeze again.

But do they offer the replacements only during your 1st 14 day period from the original purchase date? Surely they will not give you another 14 days on the replacement computer will they?

my new imac frooze

I guys, today my new imac frooze, after 3 days of use. It was when surfing the web (youtube) using wifi. this sucks

But do they offer the replacements only during your 1st 14 day period from the original purchase date? Surely they will not give you another 14 days on the replacement computer will they?

i talked to the JPN apple support today and asked for replacing my faulty imac, which freezes under the circumstance reported here, and will expire the 14 day period in 2 days. first of all, they told me that the headquarter had recognized the problem and must be working on a firmware or something to solve it. secondly, they also said it would not make any sense to send me a new one now, as no solution has been taken at the factory at this point.
so if a firmware is out but still doesnt fix the problem i got with my imac, then they promised me that they would offer replacement. then they gave me a support number, which will probably make further things go smooth in case it is necessary. i just believe what they said for now.

It is 14 days for each machine. A replacement machine is still a new machine and thus you have another 14 days to replace it - especially as this new one has the freezing issue and a stuck pixel I am refusing to keep it.

Apple have been very good about it and the third machine is on order.

WHAT? Seriously? Is that true? Say I request a replacement, 14 days after I can still request for another one if it's still defective, no need to settle with repairing?? Is it an universal thing or only applied to Apple? Cuz two years ago, I did this, and Dell told me I can't get another replacement since the initial 14 days returning period has long gone by the time my second one arrived.

Did getting a replacement fix the issue for you?

It seems it's almost 95% a software problem, based on the replacement imacs having issues as well? If they discover it's a hardware issue they will repair/replace automatically?

Hello, just interested what exactly happens when your iMac freezes ? How often does it freeze?

I got my machine 4 days ago, been runnin ever since. Wifi on, BT on, ethernet connected. I've run WoW on Ultra settings, CoD 4 on max, HD movies, music etc. everything was fine for 4 days, until now.
This is what happened: i had iTunes radio, safari 4 on and a few more non cpu intensive apps, then i moved my mouse cursor to the apple logo in the upper left corner and my iMac froze. The music coming from the iTunes became clunky and i also got some flashing little rectangle in the upper left. It was changing every time i moved the mouse. Does the same thing happen to you ?

My quesiton is, does my iMac have these dreaded freezes ? Or was it just a random freeze, taking into consideration that this was the first freeze in 4 days.

iMac 3.06
1TB
4GB RAM
Ati card

P.S. Thanks in advance

Sounds like only time will tell mate. You may have had a random freeze or it may start happening more often. I'm guessing you'll see it start to happen more often then you'll have your answer.

I thought I would add my name to the list. I unpacked a 24inch, 3.06 GHz iMac with the ATI card today, and I have had two freezes so far. Since then I have run software update and fixed permissions. I will let you know if I have any more freezes.

Has anyone had luck returning theirs and getting an identical model that doesn't freeze?

Mine crashed again this morning. Has anyone found a fix that worked for them, or should I send it back?

There are numerous answers to this question all over these atiMac threads but it sounds like some people have had good luck disabling wifi and using ethernet to hold them over until it's fixed. Good luck.

After many years of suffering at the hands of PCs that randomly freeze up when I'm doing some photoshop work, or watching a film, I finally snapped and splurged my overdraft on a shiny new iMac 2.9GHz with ATI 4850, that I took delivery of on Friday.

Guess what? Yep, the thing has frozen up on me every day so far - I thought I was going to put all those woes behind me when I made the switch!! Macs are just as bad as PCs! Nothing works how it's supposed to these days, we just get fed a load of marketing bull****!! 2009 and we can't even make computers that just work. We might as well go crawl back into the sea.

Meh.

Well they are taking the second back with no complaints. I rang them, told them that the second machine had the same problem and I wanted a replacement. They ordered one immediately.

But disd you ask how you would be compensated? Did you ask for your AppleCare to be extended, at least? I think it's unacceptable to have a $2300 paperweight for 2 months before it gets fixed.

I'll be receiving my replacement on Tuesday, hopefully.

If it freezes, it's going back on Wednesday, but this time I will be asking to keep the freezing iMac while they send me a new one.

Believe what you want, but how can you say it's 95% a software problem? It could very much be a hardware problem, in which they will recall all 4850's and send out fixed ones. If it were software related, you'd think it'd be fixed by now. :(

If you receive a defected iMac, do us all a FAVOR and get it replaced, so Apple can KNOW and acknowledge the problem. They have yet to come public with it.

Call up, tell them it freezes multiple times a day, and request a replacement. If you dare, tell them to check the Apple Discussion forums for Using An Intel iMac, and that hundreds of users are experiencing this problem. If they tell you it's the first time they've heard of the problem, call them on it and ask to speak to their supervisor or to the next tier.

That's what I'm going to do if my replacement freezes.

I've had my iMac with 4850 since Thursday 23: I have set it up, downloaded upgrades and other stuff (both with wifi on and off), I've copied several GB of stuff, tried some of the tasks that triggered the freeze for other imac's owners
no issues at all...
Today, just out of the blue, it repeatedly freezed: I was just trying to download a techtool from Apple site.
I've done some tests and it only seems to freeze when downloading from the internet something that takes more than five minutes; no problem if I do the task connecting with ethernet. No problem even if I use wifi just to transfer files from (or to) my Time Capsule.
As I said, I had already downloaded stuff using wifi in the last days with no problems, so who knows if it will happen tomorrow with ethernet too?
During the freeze, in two cases I had no other application running (other than safari, of course), in three more cases I was playing a flash game online.
I'm certainly calling the support tomorrow, but I don't know whether to ask for a replacement: if I decide to send this thing back I think I'll ask for a refund and wait for better Apple times

Hi there,

I just want to chime in on this freeze thing.
Me too had my imac 24 inch 4850 freeze up on me several times outoff the box.
When playing call of duty (highest settings)
When playing something from youtube.
Just typing in safari on some forum.
Just letting the beast sit idle.

After a while I thought let's install osx afresh.
I deleted the partition and made a new one.
Then installed osx 10.5.6 (clean install)
Then installed the ilife package.

Guess what?
No more freezes. (It's been a day now so fingers crossed)
I can play call of duty on the highest settings without freezes!
Also, airport was/is enabled as is bluetooth

What i didn't do is installing any of the updates. (i did before)
I got a feeling there's is some update in there who messes things up.
Of course i have to install them eventually but I really don't want to.
I can't believe that there was something wrong with the original osx install,
so i really really suspect an update. (yet i could be wrong)

What to do now?
And what do guys and girls think?

(there are 14 updates, i do not want to go through them one by one to find out which one crashes the system)

Scratch my earlier comment; turns out even the mighty fall. During some light browsing, I came upon the dreaded freeze/sound loop.

Unpleasant.

FWIW, I haven't updated anything yet, and I've been using WiFi this whole time.

Well, it looks like i'm calling them now. It seems like this one has a dead pixel anyway. That on top of the freezes should warrant a replacement yes?

It hasn't froze on me since saturday's call, but i'm sure it will again.
