I've had three people who know I'm a Mac user ask me, (paraphrased) "You know the commercial about the Mac and viruses, is that true?"
One of them already bought his Mac.
So while the commercials make the faithful smile and feel good about their platform, they also get possible switchers interested and curious.
I think they're more effective than a lot of commercials out there:
Would you rather see 30 secs of your favorite actor sitting behind a Mac? If so, just watch 24 or Entourage or a few dozen other shows.
Would you rather hear "are you suffering from sleepless nights due to unsorted photos, spyware and blue screens of death. Ask your local computer retailer if OS X for Mac is right for you."
Let's hear about the 30-sec ads anyone here thinks would be better.
