I think this year will be the year I buy a Apple TV. Let me give you some info.

I have two blu-ray players with apps and a wii u and for the most part my wife and I are fine with this set up. No Cable TV, only streaming.

Sadly two TV shows have basically forced my hand and pushed me into buying an Apple TV, Supergirl and the upcoming Star Trek TV show. I am a huge Superman fan and Stark Trek fan. Both TV shows are on CBS and CBS does not support the app system of the blu-ray players or Wii U. My wife loves CSI and we both enjoy big bang theory so CBS app would be something we would use and I think the apple tv would be the best way to use that app.

It's a shame that CBS app is not available on the blu-ray players because it uses the Opera market system and both are name brand blu-ray players ( Sony and Samsung ) but CBS refuses to add a channel to the Opera market and has no plans on doing so in the future. The Opera market is full of apps and it updates every so often but CBS refuses to support it. The CBS app is only available for Roku, Apple TV and Amazon stick, and Google Chrome.

Apple TV is a great fit for us because my wife and I both own iPhones and I own a mac mini and we purchase movies and music on iTunes.

I have several movies that are digital copies on my Apple iTunes account and I have a huge library of music too ( with itunes match ) so I look forward to using the apple tv.

Now I am wondering if a new Apple TV is coming in 2016 ? I don't know how often Apple upgrades those things ( it seems random at best) but I haven't heard any rumors of newer one . Should I get 32 or 64 gig ?

I probably won't purchase it right away, just sometime this year so any advice would be welcomed.

Apple hasn't made any announcements about a new ATV -- so any type of answer would be speculative and rumor...

It is a great choice. Games are the biggest user of storage. You mentioned you had a Wii. If you plan to put a lot of games on the ATV 4 you might want to consider the 64gb. But if not, then the 32gb would probably be fine. Since you have time and maybe want to save money you might want to look for sales. Second hand units might also come available at some point. But I think we could see the ATV 5 before XMAS 2016 but I have nothing to go on. Just a guess. And if that happens maybe put this one on a second TV.

It would not surprise me in the least if a new Apple TV came out this year. Apple clearly has a 4K capable set in testing and its release will be when Apple determines that there is enough demand for 4K. We have seen 4K boxes/content from Amazon and Roku/VUDU starting to appear alongside that from Netflix and Amazon Prime, so it wouldn't surprise me to Apple's hand forced sooner rather than later. One benefit if being late to the party is that Apple can hopefully include HDR content from the get-go (arguably the most important benefit of 4K).
Although we haven't seen TV manufacturers full line-ups for the year, my bet is that 4K is now standard in all but the entry level sets and that in 2017 we will see 4K in everything but small sized screens (<40") .

I don't own 4K TV and don't plan on getting one for a few years.

I own a Wii U and New 3DS so 95% of my gaming is on that and maybe 5% on iphone. My wife plays 90% on iphone and 10% on her 3DS. So games would be few and far between. I just would hate to buy a new apple tv and 70% of the space is gone because of operating system and basic apps.

I have a App called Storage Doctor TV and I have checked it from time to time. I have maybe 10-12 Games and I have 44gb free (now - and has been that for a while). I have the 64gb. I generally always get the largest just because. Hard to predict the future. I have another App I use all the time. It is for Live TV (call Channels) and they just release to beta a larger buffer size of 4gb (about 1 hour) that can grow if needed. The purpose is so you can pause/FF/REW while watching a show. If you change channels you do loose the buffer so it is temporary. Someone else said they have a App that can upload a movie into the storage but no idea of limit. Just saying things may change over the next year or so. Hard to say.

Not going to happen. The release cycle is 2+ years and we have just had a major revision.

I highly doubt there will be a hardware update until mid-2017 at soonest. The ATV4, along with the app store, can be updated (operating system) and augmented (apps) without changing hardware.

Of course, this won't address adding an optical cable or 4K support, but I doubt that's on the Apple immediate roadmap.

Not a chance of a new one this year, get a 32gig and enjoy.

Currently, RadioShack has 32gb or 64gb bundle with HDMI cord priced at USD 120 or 170 + 6 shipping.
This promo has been running for about 2 months, I don't know how long this will continue.

I have a 32gb with approx 20 apps (OS + apps = 7gb). Hence, my current free space is 25gb. From your usage description, 32gb would suffice and probably a newer model would not even be useful for you. If you decide not to buy now, by late Fall there are usually rumors which might indicate if a new model will be available.

The Computer App (free) on the ATV works with Home Sharing to your Mac Mini. You can access your photos, music, videos and downloaded iTunes movies on the mini. You can also access your iTunes music match (but that uses internet bandwidth). You can also use Airplay to send music, photos, videos, movies, etc. from your iphones to the ATV.

The CBS All Access app costs $6/mo and contains commercials. No non commercial version.

Thank You so much! I will see if Best Buy matches that , because my rewards points, but it seems good.

I was going to do the same thing but ended up just ordering it online from radioshack, it comes with an hdmi cord which i did not need and is still in the package.

Best Buy matched for me last week in Florida.

Depends on the manager. Some may say radio snack has a "promo" since its tied into the 32gb plus hdmi cable and deny you the match.

Also since so many radio shack have closed. Many local radio shack stores don't carry any stock. So local Best Buy may not match if you have no local stock.

Fortunately. I did my homework. Called my local RadioShack (10 miles away) and they did have stock. The Best Buy (2 miles away from my house) price match when they called the radio shack. Obviously only reason I like Best Buy was I had $60 in reward certificates to redeem.

I was wondering why the preference for Best Buy when it's so much easier to just get it from Radio Shack.

I guess I'm also a little nostalgic because it bothers me to see stores like Radio Shack fade away. Not that I think this promo will keep them in business.

The current Apple TV already has 4k output capability. It's CPU/GPU are quite capable of streaming 4k content. This is a pretty durable hardware platform that could have 4k enabled via a software update. There is nothing that would be required of this box for the next few years that would require a hardware update.

Clearly... lol

Preference isn't Best Buy per se.

It's that I had 55 dollar worth of certificates to be used.

Ever since Best Buy started matching Amazon pricing and Amazon charges sales taxes in state of Florida. I been shopping at Best Buy more. So accumulating more certificates.

That's why most of us want to shop at Best Buy.

Or else. Yes. Driving 10 miles to radio shack wasn't a big deal.

You're welcome. Let us know your outcome.

I bought a 32gig today !!!

I got Best Buy to price match radio shack but they didn't want to give me a hdmi cord . I have an extra one at home just laying around so that wasn't a big deal .

My wife was only so so about buying it but since it was on special and I had a gift card it made it easier to get . I think she will be impressed once she plays with it. Thanks everyone. I updated every thing and attached account to it so it's all good

I concur. 32 is more than enough. I got a 64 and I haven't even used 10GB. Waste of money for the extra space.

How do you check space ? I updated and got several movie and tv show apps and a few games . I went to about but didn't see how , I don't want to pay an app or hack it to figure it out either

Storage Doctor was free, may still be.

Glad you were able to get a deal. The integration with your other Apple products should impress your wife. It is a bonus to be able to use only one box and not to have to change inputs.

When or if it ever comes...

H.265
4K w/ HDR
DTS-HD MA
DolbyTrue HD
Dolby Atmos

Or go home. In other words, the next one should have specs like NVIDIA Shield.

I couldn't agree more. I highly doubt Apple is going to release a new ATV when they just released the 4th gen ATV late last year. If you're just using the new ATV for entertainment apps (no games), you should be completely fine with the 32GB model.
