Do we know how many gold and ceramic watches Apple sold? I was under the impression that it was not exactly a success story.

I don't know. Never seen any data, but I highly doubt that they were ever expected to sell in large numbers. They certainly wouldn't have been produced in equal numbers to the other models, so I doubt they had millions of them left over sitting in boxes.

How does Apple's battery replacement process work?? I'm interested, but absolutely want to keep the watch past the point where most folks are experiencing battery life drop off. Thx.

Resale on them is terrible which is great for me.

Previously owned a ceramic that was just a generation behind that I bought cheap second hand and loved it. Will be excited to have that opportunity again.

I always liked the ceramic. My only issue with buying the expensive models of Apple Watch is they just don't last long enough to invest that much money for me. You may get 3-4 years out of an Apple Watch and it's tough to justify $600+ for a watch that will only get me 3-4 years of usage. Take my Series 2. It's 3 years old and performance is quite slow now.

That’s where you’re incorrect. Smart watches are _not_ an investment, it’s merely an aesthetic decision based on what someone prefers. Depending how long someone keeps the watch and being they want a specific casing material (i.e stainless, ceramic, ect), it pays for itself as long someone regularly uses it. I’d happily pay that, being I’m not interested in the aluminum Model. Some of us want the ‘higher end’ models. Choice is a good thing.

As long as someone can accept it depreciates, but enjoys the functionality and aesthetics, that’s really all that matters.
Yep, totally agreed. We have to remember, value and worth are very subjective.

Love the Titanium idea.
Do you think, when they move to Micro LED, which has been rumoured to be coming soon-ish, the bezels will get even narrower?
Virtually all screen would be amazing, and something I'd love.

boring. where is Micro LED???
Still “next year” for at least the third year in a row. So far the only available microLED displays are very expensive, low ppi panels. The high pixel density display suitable for the Watch could be another five to ten years out for all we know.

Haha! I’m assuming they mean with the heart-monitoring features and health applications to the devices.

But yeah, the point is that a Rolex in 50 years is still a timeless collectible, functioning Rolex. It will always have use and be worth something. In even 5 years that Apple Watch isn’t going to work as intended. It’s a throwaway. People spending the absurd amounts of cash on them are just wealthy culturally adapted brainwashed IMO. It’s a thing. Needing, craving status as some form of personal gratification and measurement of success. Those are the people spending $1300 on the throwaway Apple watches.
Could not agree more, digital watches are throw-away and will always be so, spending money on exotic cases is a game for the idle rich, enjoy. Those "Edition" watch owners must still love their Gen1 electronics, ha.

What's the point if they cost hundreds more? It's tech. It's throwaway goods. People buy a new one every year or two. No point spending hundreds more for the casing

Simple. Some people have a purchase power such that for them $3000 is the equivalent of $300 for the average consumer. A potential $3000 Watch is for those people. The same people can buy a new Watch after 1 or 2 years and for their finances it’s like updating a $300 model. If one asks the question you just asked, it’s just not a prospective buyer for that product or model of the product (neither am I). So the question becomes: “Should some people decide what other people should buy with their money?” There are some valid reasons to answer this question with a yes, but only if you are okay with living in a non-capitalistic economy.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Apple offer an iPhone Upgrade like program to the iPad and Watch. Especially if these new Watch models will be $1K or more.

Yeah exactly what I think... I love the ceramic but the extra is not worth it considering the 3-4 years maximum service life.

This is one area where Apple smartwatches are trying to emulate the "jewelry" property of high-end watches but fail horribly. A Rolex, Omega etc still works as well on year 1 as on year 40 (with a bit of maintenance perhaps). A smartwatch is only useful in a fancy display case after its software support is discontinued after 4 years.

Of course you could still wear it as jewelry but the whole point of watches is the combination of form and function.

Edit: Sorry, now that I read the rest of the thread I see many others have made the exact same point (even referencing the same brands lol). But good, I hope Apple catches on to this. Modularity would be a great option IMO.

I never understood why someone would purchase a high end smart watch. High end watches like Rolex and omega are timeless, smart watches are not. Dropping $1300+ on a watch that will be obsolete in 2-3 years doesn’t seem like a great investment.

It’s not an investment at all.

The ceramic watch was great - very durable.

I sold mine early, and bought a USA aluminum model, just so I could get the ecg feature sooner.

Guys who buy the ceramic probably want the latest each year - I sure do - I lose about half every year selling my less than a year old watch.

Regrets? Not really, but yes, it burns up money.

I had a Titanium Timex watch decades ago (might have been their first case in the material) and it was cool-looking, but I would prefer Stainless (plain or Space Black). The Ceramic Watches looked nice, but I really like my lugs to match my case and I don't believe anyone makes ceramic lugs. I imagine I'd have the same issue with a Titanium Apple Watch, as well.

Don't worry, Nomad has you covered! (with titanium, at least)

Completely agree, some folks would see it as an investment and I doubt it won't work on iOS for years to come. You can still sync iPod classics to Mojave.

Call Apple for service, or bring your watch to an Apple Store or Apple-authorized service shop. Regardless, the watch will be shipped to an Apple repair facility, the battery will be replaced, and the watch will be shipped back to you.

I could only just justify the price of the 44mm GPS sport edition, I had the SS S0 but only because I found it for £200 off a few months after release. I will never pay more than £500 for an AW.

Definitely would like to see what the Titanium version will look like. Nervous to see the cost though.

I like to see them “waggle” their wrist just in case you didn’t notice they were wearing an Apple Watch

Very curious about the Ti model...but never saw value in spending more $$ for SS or Ceramic when I upgrade every year. The aluminum is nice and light, too.

But I’ve been swayed by new shiny Apple stuff before, haha!!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!! New iPhone, new AW. Wahoo.

high end rolex or etc, lives more than you...so whats the point? Apple watch makes you live longer
I think they were referring to that benefit of longer life expectancy is the same whether you drop $350 or up to 30x+ for a fancier case. Textbook definition of diminishing returns. Would I love a SS or ceramic case, sure. But I, and probably many others can’t justify the cost increase for the 99% feature parity outside of materials.
