No way?! Since when!? 😱

You’re suggesting that most of the lower end and mid-tier models are mostly decoys created to inflate the value of the most expensive models, and that they’re meticulously priced and spec’d to make them appear incomplete or cheap unless you go all out with a high end option? 😳

The CEO that put cheaper SSDs in the 256GB M2 Airs and block 128GB iPhone Pro from recording in ProRes would never! 😰

Stage Manager is super taxing and only works on M1 or better!!?! They said so in a press release so it can’t be otherwise!! 🥵

And 64GB and 256GB options for <Pro iPads is not a scheme to make you buy more. It’s just that nobody wants or needs 128GB. It sure is. 🫡

All Tim Cook is concerned about is giving us the best user experience, always. Anyone who complains is just a hater.☝️😤

The Lightning to USB-C adapter for 1st Gen Apple Pencil is a modern marvel of engineering and aesthetic design! No better, no simpler solution will ever be bestowed upon us from Apple. So pleasing to look at when it’s all dongled up and charging! 🥹🤣😆😆😆
Spot on!

A lot of what doesn't make sense about the new iPad would likely have been excused if they just kept the price at $330, which is likely what Apple will do with it in a year anyways.

I’m not sure if Apple pencil 2 makes sense for the new iPad. It was my initial thought as well, but when I saw the lag from an Apple pencil on a non-laminated vs laminated display it kinda made sense what Apple did. You would not get any of the AP2 advantages with the new iPads non-laminated display.
Oh, right. And there’s just no way Apple could have laminated the iPad 10 display. A way too expensive and technically complex process. Yes, very truthy. 🤔

Come on now! 😆

I think we might want to consider that it’s Apple creating the limitations for iPad 10 that make it incompatible with the 2nd Gen Pencil. And it’s Apple who takes away anything that would result in no added features when using Pencil 2nd Gen, nobody else.

Apple sets a price point first and then give the product the features that the consumer end price “allows” for while retaining its profit margin goal and avoiding hurting sales of higher-end models with overlapping specs.

You’re not getting laminated display and 2nd Gen Pencil support because you aren’t spending $499 for a 64GB mini or more.

It’s that simple. Stop pretending it’s deeper than that.

Interesting, I didn’t know that. High time Apple laminate the display, bring Apple Pencil 2, and develop a newer Apple Pencil 3 for iPad Pros. We need better product differentiation between iPads, although the M2 helps. I suspect the next gen iPad Pros will be quite differentiated.

I don’t know what  was thinking with the 10th gen iPad but all I know is that I’m perfectly happy with my 9th generation iPad that I just got as a birthday gift in October. I haven’t had a  pencil yet so I don’t know what the big deal with that is.

New “cheap” iPad gets the A14 chip to save costs I guess, and yet the new cheaper Apple TVs gets the A15 Bionic. Doesn’t make sense to me. At least if they had given the cheaper of the new Apple TVs the A14 as well that would kinda make sense, and probably would have made it even cheaper. All in all this is the worst launch of new Apple products ever imho. Half hearted, non-sensical, frustrating.

It would almost certainly have meant more sales at launch to those that aren’t just casual users (rather than the well I like it but £499 is a bit steep to still be two processors behind the latest.) Plus that would give it an advantage over a refurbished Air 4, so a section of customers would go the new iPad way.

But maybe that was the point, to upsell the non-casual users. Casual users probably don’t know what processor it uses and simply decide if the Pro/Air like design merits the increased price. They’ll still buy either the 9 or 10, it will be users here that are among those deciding to keep what they’ve got and buy nothing.

2 reasons for A15 in new Apple TV:

1. That ended production of the A12. They now produce A13-16 in various devices.

2. I think this ATV may go longer between updates than last years to this one. I’m thinking 2-3 years. The A15 will hold up well for that. It’s enough for all current features and a couple that I think we will get over the next couple of tvOS versions as well.

A15 production is in iPhone 14 and 14 Plus right now. Next year when it isn’t in iPhones, it will probably move to entry level iPad (the one with colors). So, chip production wise, it makes sense for the next 2-3 years.

It's been said before that for devices deployed en masse by educational institutions, a non-laminated display is preferred because the actual LCD has a good chance of surviving damage to the cover glass and average repair costs thus become much cheaper. If the 10th gen is slated to become the "education edition" iPad once 9th gen stocks are depleted, it would make sense to keep the display non-laminated.

A15 in the iPhone SE makes it seem jarring, I must admit. Base iPhone has better than the base iPad even though the base iPad is newer.

They have so many chips in production now that they keep previous gens on sale to meet a price point.

That cheep iPad has been updated every single year since 2017.
The Apple TV gets updated on average once every 4 years or so.
Even putting aside the fact that they are two completely different products, its clear Apple put the newest generation of processor they could in the Apple TV, because they don’t plan on updating it for years to come.
They were still selling an A8 based ATV up until two years ago, wouldn’t be surprised to see the A15 version stick around for the better part of a decade as well.

It is taxing, which is why the A12 iPads only get around 30% of SM's features.
… what?
A12 iPad Pros get the exact same stage manager as M1s, only difference is external display support, which… isn’t even a thing in the latest public release.
External display support is not 70% of stage manager, it just isn’t.
Since it allows you to go from using four windows at once to eight windows at once, you can argue that it’s 50% of stage manager, but even that’s still debatable.
But in the latest official public release of stage manager, it’s identical between A12X/Z and M1

No, it's not. The 12.9 A12 model doesn't get Display Zoom either.

A12 gets no external display and half the number of apps you can multitask with.

No external display 50%
Half the apps ~30%

Or

Half the apps 50%
No external Display ~30%

Thats what happens when people demanded it on iPads with 4GB RAM.

Just bought an iPad as a Christmas present for my partner. It's their first iPad and it'll be used purely for content consumption, so the 10th Gen iPad should've been a foregone conclusion. However, I ended up getting them an Apple refurbished 4th Generation iPad Air instead.

In the UK the 10th Gen iPad is £499 and the iPad Air refurb was £439. As far as value for money goes, the refurb was a no-brainer. Laminated display, magic keyboard support if necessary, same chip etc. Only thing that's different between the two are colour options and the ultra wide camera (and the poorer accessory compatibility on the 10th Gen).

The 10th Gen iPad makes less sense when you factor in outside buying options like refurbished and sales on older models.

You made the right decision. A refurbished iPad-Air, even being slightly more expensive, is a great alternative to the iPad-10.

The iPad pricing in the UK has really gone askew. I would definitely consider a refurb iPad Pro/Air when I decide to upgrade my iPad.

Just got my wife a 10, she had been on a 5 since 2017. Huge upgrade and well worth the $. Looked at the 9, which had same form factor as the 5, screen experience on 10 is well worth the upgrade. I’m certain that the 9 still exists to meet needs of education with many schools have grade schoolers using iPads.

Contrary to the nay-sayers, I think the iPad 10 is very nice. I bet she will enjoy it.

I have a question - if they laminated the screen, and added pencil 2 support, is there much left to differentiate it from the Air?

My only gripe about the 10 is the price. I think it was a really big jump for the base pad - I think 379 or even 399 makes more sense. Now we have 449, 499 mini, 599 Air. Seems like if you’re wanting to get people in the ecosystem, you’ve priced a lot of folks out by having your cheapest model at $449.
