I have a question - if they laminated the screen, and added pencil 2 support, is there much left to differentiate it from the Air?

My only gripe about the 10 is the price. I think it was a really big jump for the base pad - I think 379 or even 399 makes more sense. Now we have 449, 499 mini, 599 Air. Seems like if you’re wanting to get people in the ecosystem, you’ve priced a lot of folks out by having your cheapest model at $449.
9th gen is $329, pretty low point of entry.

In that scenario the main things unique to each are.

iPad 10 - Landscape camera, colors, and new keyboard. (there may be some additional minor features in the iPad-10)

iPad Air - M1 for higher performance, twice the RAM at 8GB, faster USB-C, Stage Manager, External display support, and existing keyboards.

But you are correct that for most people the differences wouldn't be obvious.

You cant have Pencil 2 support with a landscape camera unless either were off-center. There will have to be a Pencil 3 with two smaller magnets positioned on either side of the camera.

I agree. I think even £449 might have worked for the UK, but there’s just something about the round figure of £500 being only a pound away from the 10’s £499 start price that makes you stop and say no way. I got an Air 5 from Apple for £569 soon after launch. The base iPad would have been fine, but it seemed a bargain for the longevity it will offer as the user isn’t one for getting new things often.

The Mini is actually £10 cheaper than I thought at £569, not that that’s much consolation. £669 Air and £369 for the base iPad. I can’t help feeling they’ll sell more 9th Gens than 10th to those that really need an iPad at that differential. Extra storage and cellular now £180 each.

I’m not sure if Apple pencil 2 makes sense for the new iPad. It was my initial thought as well, but when I saw the lag from an Apple pencil on a non-laminated vs laminated display it kinda made sense what Apple did. You would not get any of the AP2 advantages with the new iPads non-laminated display.
Does everyone buy and use the damned pencil anyway? I have never used one. Heck I don't even use the Samsung S-Pens that come as standard with a lot of my devices.

I have a daughter who is an artist and she uses them. I also do an occasional art project with them but it’s rare. I do sometimes sign documents from school or elsewhere with them. But most people just use a finger for that.

Just got my wife a 10, she had been on a 5 since 2017. Huge upgrade and well worth the $. Looked at the 9, which had same form factor as the 5, screen experience on 10 is well worth the upgrade. I’m certain that the 9 still exists to meet needs of education with many schools have grade schoolers using iPads.
i have an iPad mini 6 and a much older iPad mini (I forget which one) and an old hand me down iPad from my husband. I saw Dan’s video review of the 10 and fell in love with the 10 and put it on my Christmas wish list. It’s exactly what I would want in an upgrade from whatever the model is that my husband gave me. Whatever he gave me is in great shape, but since he keeps iPads a long time it was already a few years along when I got it and I got it around 2017, too.

I’d like to set the 10 up in the kitchen on the folio keyboard. I don’t need anything super fancy. My mini is just a bit too small for the kind of setup I want in the kitchen.

Edit: oh it’s right there in my signature. The iPad my husband gave me is iPad Pro 2016. I must have gotten it from him in 2018 then because I know it was older than a year when he passed it to me.

Oh, right. And there’s just no way Apple could have laminated the iPad 10 display. A way too expensive and technically complex process. Yes, very truthy. 🤔

Come on now! 😆

I think we might want to consider that it’s Apple creating the limitations for iPad 10 that make it incompatible with the 2nd Gen Pencil. And it’s Apple who takes away anything that would result in no added features when using Pencil 2nd Gen, nobody else.

Apple sets a price point first and then give the product the features that the consumer end price “allows” for while retaining its profit margin goal and avoiding hurting sales of higher-end models with overlapping specs.

You’re not getting laminated display and 2nd Gen Pencil support because you aren’t spending $499 for a 64GB mini or more.

It’s that simple. Stop pretending it’s deeper than that.
If they had laminated the display, the distinction between the iPad Air would have been even less.

I do. Just not Apple's, but a cheap knock-off from Amazon, that works splendid. Only difference is that you have to charge it via USB. It snaps to the side of the iPad though.

It seems like Apple had 2 separate teams working away and the Air team complained the new model was too close to that in terms of price and features so they released it In fisher price colours to make it seem like its aimed at kids, a white keyboard that is going to scuff as soon as you put it into a bag and limited it to the 1st gen Pencil.

I use mine daily.
That's fair enough. Apple really do have a huge uptake of their products. Samsung include an S-pen with their premium products and I still never use them, nor do I see many non-Apple people using digital pens yet everyone with an Ipad seems to buy a pencil without giving it a moment's thought. Apple marketing is fantastic.

Heaven forbid adults like non-bland colors.

I've had the white Magic Keyboard for my Pro for more than a year and it still looks new.

Well, yeah, I thought this was pretty self-explanatory. Price increase is due to design changes (like the Air 4), whilst retaining enough differentiation so as not to cannibalise the Air 5. Makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is this device when compared to the Air 4, but that’s another issue.
