So, to sum it up, it’s not possible as to now to install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on 4GB+ MacPro 1,1?

If I understood correctly, the problem lays in the boot.efi file that can’t address more than 4GB since it’s a hacked 32 bit boot file?

Any perspective for a solution? (beside removing RAM, of course!)

Thanks!

Really? The solution was to remove ram? I tried all the tutorials i found in over a week and the problem was that i have too much ram? This is ************* man!

LATERAL-GRADE TO ATI RADIAN CARD. I say lateral grade cause when I bought my Mac. I opted for the Nvida Quadro FX 4500. At the time it was a $1200 card.
Never a crash and I am using programs like AutoCAD 2013, Maya 2013, Mathematica 8 and not one crash or kernal Panic yet

Hi Guys,

I need help, I can install ML without any problem on MacPro 1,1 2006 as a fresh install.

But when trying to upgrade my existing 10.7.4 system, I cannot get the upgrade working, always full ML install is performed. Meaning that my Application folder is replaced by the new install. previous user accounts are not visible even if still present on the HD....

How did you upgrade your Macs, which option or process did you used ?

Thanks,

This is crazy, when you buy a 1000+ MacBook or even more expensive Mac Pro you are expecting it to last more than an equivalent PC!
Both my MacBooks can run ML, but if Apple releases a 10.9 upgrade next year my late 2009 White MacBook may be left behind (hope my early 2011 15" Pro isn't though!).
Having to resort to hackintosh techniques to keep a 4 years-old Mac up to date is just not right!

Ok below is how I proceed and it works...

1- Backup 10.7.4 System
2- Install ML "Which replace your Application folder by a new one quite empty" but keep all users folders.
3- Restore Application folders using the restore Option when configuring ML
4- Under Pref systems re-create Users taking the option that original folders already exist.
5- Reboot.....

you are done :) all users and apps are back.........

Have Fun

Installed via Firewire (post#2) from capable Macbook Pro to Mac Pro 1,1 running 10.6.

Replaced the 2 boot.efi files, and PlatformSupport.plist files. Would not boot - got prohib sign, and tried zapping PRAM. Still didn't work, and tried to get more info by booting into single user.

As single user starts, there was a message saying I had unsupported Mac from check being run by Recovery HD partition. Mounted that disk, replaced the PlatformSupport.plist. Also tried to replace that boot.efi, but cannot since it is locked, and I don't have permission.

On next boot attempt, I can see the Apple logo w/ spinning wheel. But it stays stuck on that screen for 10+ minutes.

Any ideas for a fix?

I have a lot of similar problems as you. Tell me, can you boot from any drive other than the ML one? Even if I clone to another at the moment I cannot. To clarify I can only boot from one physical drive.

I have managed to get my macmini working but it thinks there is no wifi hardware. It is 1.8ghz and mactracker says mb138ll/a but to get it booting I had to call it f4208eaa but not sure why.

Anyone fixed similar problem with no wifi hardware?

OK, I did get Mountain lion tow work on Mac Pro 1,1, but I have another problem.
I have tried to update mountain lion to 10.8.2, and after the update finishes and computer restarts then I get this error on boot :

Boot file path: \System\Library\CoreServices\boot.efi
..Loading kernel cache file 'System\Library\Cacshes\com.apple.kext.caches\Startup\kernelcache'...
Loading 'mach_kernel'...
..Error loading kernel 'mach_kernel' (0x80000001)

Can someone help me?

Thank you!

Not sure about that but you did have a clone right?
What I'll do every time an update comes out now is download ML from the app store again and make a USB installer of the latest version.

From another forum I have learned that iMessages will never work. Apparently it checks the UDID of your Mac, and cuts it off there. Unless you use Chameleon, it won't work. So Hackintoshes can use, just not tweaked Macs. Eff.

Yea, i think the problem is with the video card, i only have a HD 4890 and i think is not that good for mountain lion, maybe not x64 or something like that

Can't change boot volume

Hey there, I updated my Mac Pro 1,1 from Lion to Mountain Lion, and everything seems copacetic except I can't change the boot volume. Because I'm now using a non-EFI graphics card - a GTX 660, which was the point of this little endeavour - I can't use the option-button boot selector, but now I also can't use the Startup Disk prefpane, BootChamp or bless.

Bless gives me the following error trying to set it:

Could not find IODeviceTree:/options

And when trying --info:

Can't access "efi-boot-device" NVRAM variable

I'd really appreciate any tips anyone has on getting this going, I really depend on boot camp a lot.

My iCloud stopped working a few days ago. It keeps telling me to enter the password in system preferences, I tried to enter it and it gets stuck on waiting and waiting and waiting for a long time and then does not work. Anyone else having this issue?

Preparing for the future...

So right now, my MP runs ML with almost no problems (messages will not work but that may well be related to a MB replacement -by Apple- that somehow did not serialize the MB to the machine) but I have no doubt that, in the future, I will find myself in the same bucket. So, my questions is this: given that there are Mach kernels out there, couldn't one recompile the Mach kernel and add whatever it lacks (I am not sure how to do this but I know it is possible to remove things from a BSD or Linux kernel prior to recompiling) so that it will be compatible with the old hardware?

Given this, I was thinking, wouldn't it be possible to patch a PPC kernel so that ML could theoretically run on a G-4 or G-5 based machine?
