Hello all...

I tried to install the new Security updates for macOS High Sierra this morning and all I get when my machine starts to restart to install the updates is a light black screen and my cursor moves over the to top left-hand side of my screen. I downloaded the three-part updates as one full update... so when my screen hangs, I hard restart using the power button and all comes back fine... but the updates are still showing as needing a restart to update.

I went into Safe Mode and individually installed two of the three updates... Command Line Code update and Safari Security update, both installed fine.... but when I go to restart the main Security part.... I just get the same near black screen with my cursor positioned in the top left-hand side of the screen again and the whole thing just hangs.

I force start my computer back again into regular startup mode and all fine... so now just this one Security Update 2018-002 10.13.6 is left... I tried to restart hoping that with the other two installed it might work... but it just hangs again.

Anyone else experience a similar situation...?

I'm having trouble with this update also. Had to do a hard reboot and then screen showed a bunch of error codes. Thank God for CCC. Recloned from last nights backup and now I'm going to wait to see if anyone else has an answer.

Hi Beach Music...

Did you try and manual install of that Security Update component only..? That was suggested to me.

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1979...5HROc22UUEGbwI35u5Gr8rLkU3Fo56m33OoVOQFs-_oJk

When I contacted Apple... they said to boot into Recovery Mode and re-install 10.13.6 from there to resolve the issue.

My screen would hang but when I would do a Force restart... all would return 100% as was before... no issues... only that the Security update was still in my App Store updates area requiring a restart...

What model of MacPro did you have this issue with? I'm a MacPro 12 Core (Mid 2010) 2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon.
[doublepost=1540985772][/doublepost]Hi again Beach Music....

I just tried a standalone manual install of the Security Update 2018-002 10.13.6 and no difference, the exact same symptoms... screen goes dark and hangs... no Dark Off Screen Mode... cursor still displays.... but no restart, it just hangs... I gave it 10mins... and no change... I will wait also now to see if Apple has a new update fix soon... or of someone else has any suggestions...

Didn’t work on both of my macs
2015 MacBook Pro and 2017 iMac
The computers won’t even boot into OS now

:(

Very sorry to hear that jzhangc

I was advised by Apple Tech Support to go into Recovery Mode and re-install macOS High Sierra 10.13.6... but I'm going to hold off for now... as luckily... mine didn't install.... just hung... and when I did a hard forced restart using the power button all returned to normal... but the update is still in my App Store updates section looking for a restart to install.

I tried a manual download of the update also as a standalone install and same result...just hung.

Apple claiming it needs a SMC or PRAM Reset... I reckon all a waste of time... it's the update... something is wrong with it and hopefully the more people that shout about it, the faster it might get fixed.

I did the reinstallation it works now.

Those were definitely bad update files from apple.

Hi again jzhangc

That's grrreat news jzhangc :)

So are you saying you did the whole Recovery Mode and re-install macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 solution.... and it worked...? no issues....?

So far so good.

I did the online reinstall so it downloads the OS from apple directly. Seems the reinstall didn’t include this security update - it shows up in the software update in App Store. I am holding off now.

I informed the apple support Twitter account. Let’s see what happens.

Similar issue here. Software update installed this update along with Xcode & command line tools updates, then on reboot throws up a installation dump. On restarting, rinse and repeat. Tried booting into safe mode. Progress bar reaches 100% and then just freezes.

EDIT: I managed to boot into my desktop by waiting until the installer error log appears, then going to Utilities menu & selecting my usual startup drive again. Maybe worth trying this if anyone else is affected. The system froze for ~2mins but then rebooted and is now back. Definitely appears to be something borked in this update for some machines. I'm on HS 10.13.6 on a 2011 MBP.

On the same boat here... Got caught in a log loop during the installation process. Finally decided to roll back to the latest time machine backup. Thank you very much apple.

This is exactly what i did and i managed to get back to my desktop. Done a CCC backup straight away and then installed the update through the app store again and seems fine now.

Don't now how it tried to install in the first place as my updates are not set to install automatically.

Same problem - computer gets stuck on bootup then i got an error message MacOS couldnt be installed. Could anyone walk me through what I need to do? Will I lose all my files?

My 2011 MBP doesn't load the update tab in the App Store, it freezes and have to force quit. Tried getting it through terminal but will not load there either.

Hi,

When you get the error log screen come up click on utilities i think it is in the top tool bar and then disk. You should be able to then select your normal startup disk. It should reboot and hopefully take you back to your desktop

Same issue here, tried a couple times. I'm on High Sierra. I had only selected the Safari update and the security update. But it boots to the error log file now and says the OS can't be installed. I have a bootable external SSD created by SuperDuper and that worked fine. I'm on that now. Not sure if I should try to download the OS again to install on my internal SSD or just wait until Apple releases another update. Are you guys reinstalling to your primary drive?

So everyone is suggesting not to use the update right? I started downloading it and luckily started reading this thread so I canceled the update and turned off auto update/ install.

Update: went ahead and installed the update and everything went fine.

At the installation log stage, go to Utilities menu, Startup Drive and reselect your usual drive. Then reboot. Wait a couple of minutes (my machine appeared frozen at this point) then the machine should reboot and you're back. No need to reinstall MacOS / TM backups etc.

Like others, I redownloaded and reinstalled the securoty update today and all went through ok this time.

Yes, all the updates are installed successfully now. Thanks

Even though my bootable external drive wasn't really needed this time, having one gives you a little peace of mind.

Is there any way one can see if they altered the update in the meantime?

EDIT: Apple seems to have pulled the update.

Hi rednif.... it's still showing as an update inside my App Store app... has it disappeared from yours..?
