Yep. Yours could (!) be a new version of the update.
I don't think so... I reckon it is the same crappy update... as the issue still seems to be occurring for other users and I contacted Apple on Twitter today and they are still claiming it's a non-issue.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8609245?page=1

I'm going to wait and see for another few days. I will update to Mojave also if I ever get my power cable from China to install my new Sapphire PULSE RX580 8GB graphics card... :( Waiting 6 weeks already and still no sign. Another one ordered on the way also... but no sign of that also.

Thanks for all the contributions and comments in relation to this topic. Good to know my experience is not isolated to my own machine.

Update is back online in the AS for me after it disappeared this morning. Could be new, could be old – who knows at this point. Won't update for now.

I had gotten the notification re: the update earlier this week, and told my MBP to "update all". However, it showed up again this morning, and my MBP was NOT happy. It hung once with a clear white screen, and once with a clear black screen. When at one point it gave me the "folder" symbol with the "?" inside it, I thought this is ridiculous. I force-booted the unit, and although it still seemed to do some weird stuff, it did eventually finish the update, and I am working on it now. Whew!!! Sure wish I had seen this thread BEFORE I tried it.

After the update disappeared for some time in the MAS (still believe they pulled the update temporarily), the new version that popped up later installed without any issues. Solved :)

Had similar issue when trying to install it eventually installed but it's been nothing but hassle since, RAM usage is high, issues with iCloud, my calendar app will not start and when it does it crashes after after a few seconds. Just an utter nightmare for me.

I am on Mac Pro 5.1 with sonnet SSD pro, two Raid HFS SSDs

Update freezes at 50% , updated from AppStore and now I am stucked, this is a HFS clone of APFS which file system Do You use ?

Should I Try to update APFS too?
Has anyone successfully updated HFS system?

Pram reset several boots later (maybe 7 times tried to reboot)
Installer white box appeared with HS logo saying 38 minutes left and stuck again)

Wow, what a complete and utter POS update, wish I would have read this before I did the install.

I am currently installing Mohave to at least get to the point to where I can manually back up files and then revert to my most recent time machine backup.

Been a number of years since I had an update go this bad.

This is what I see on local SUS...

Looks like they pulled it and pushed a new one out possibly as late as Wednesday with the same ID? I also had the update fail and dump logs on my MBP, withe the update still showing in App Store after reboot... Didn't think much of it and thought it was just refreshing really slow and forgot about it (I guess for the time it wasn't enabled). Noticed it showing up again earlier today.

What the hell??? We can't even rely on Apple's own Security Updates now? I had no problem with the 10.12.6 Sierra version of this Security Update, but I suppose I shouldn't be so cocky in installing Apple software these days, huh?? :(

I ended up using a time machine back up to go back an update, no issues now, will think twice before updating next time.

it's not the first time there's been a bad update, it wont be the last time.

and look at the fixes in that update!! it's a lot forget what the exploit it fixes is called "pile driver" or side driver or something  the new specter class one

I have the same problem on an almost brand new 2018 macBook Pro. The install fails but does not have any drastic effect. I just get a message that the download failed, with error code 602. I tried reinstalling 10.13.6 in Recovery mode, which worked without problem, but it didn't fix the problem - same error message. I tried to sidestep the issue by upgrading to 10.14, but that didn't install either.

Hello all...

I tried to install the new Security updates for macOS High Sierra this morning and all I get when my machine starts to restart to install the updates is a light black screen and my cursor moves over the to top left-hand side of my screen. I downloaded the three-part updates as one full update... so when my screen hangs, I hard restart using the power button and all comes back fine... but the updates are still showing as needing a restart to update.

I went into Safe Mode and individually installed two of the three updates... Command Line Code update and Safari Security update, both installed fine.... but when I go to restart the main Security part.... I just get the same near black screen with my cursor positioned in the top left-hand side of the screen again and the whole thing just hangs.

I force start my computer back again into regular startup mode and all fine... so now just this one Security Update 2018-002 10.13.6 is left... I tried to restart hoping that with the other two installed it might work... but it just hangs again.

Anyone else experience a similar situation...?

For a number of days and after 3 unsuccessful trials of discussion with Apple Assistance supervisors, I decided to clear all cache data and font maintenance that could eventually stick the mac during the update process. And now it passed without any problem.

I am using a MacPro 17 (2012), on HighSierra.

Here are the various cleaning actions I ran on Terminal (but I don't know for sure which of these commands really wiped away the problem, it is only affecting caches functions, anyway), please type them in a Terminal session, one-by-one :

  1. rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/*
  2. rm -rf ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/*
  3. sudo rm -rf /Library/Caches/*
  4. sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/*
  5. atsutil databases -removeUser
  6. sudo atsutil databases -remove
  7. sudo atsutil server -shutdown
  8. sudo atsutil server -ping
  9. sudo rm -rf /var/folders/*
After performing the last Terminal command, Restart. If the update is not automatically restarting during the boot, you may need to have it installed via the AppleStore.

My system wouldn't let me do the two steps shown above ?? In the end, no change. It still fails to install the security update.

Didn't work for me either...

maybe try deleting /Library/Updates and force a re-donwload? I noticed portables with problem more often, maybe the background download isn't complete, especially if it was done in the background over a few days or when they pushed a new update. I say this because one error that kept popping up was something along the lines of invalid progress, where the completed download size was bigger than the target

Has this update been rolled into the 10.13.6 combo updater by any chance? I downloaded that on 30th of October and can't see any more available updates.

That combo updater was a weird one - at least three reboots and long waiting times sometimes with a plain black screen. I was on the verge of pulling the plug a few times, never seen an OS update behave like this.

No, it hasn't. You can verify if the security update has been installed by checking the build number of the operating system. With the security update, it should be 17G3025, rather than 17G65. Follow directions here to find the build number: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201260

I have the same issue.

Hi, my MacPro 2011 won’t restart or shut down after I accept to install the security update.
My Mac Pro won’t accept upgrade to Mojave because my GPU is not supported so I have to stick to High Sierra.
I have booted in safe mode, reset the PRAM and unplugged from the wall. Can’t get it to work. Everyday, I need to hold the power button to turn it off.

Any recommendations?
I’m considering reinstalling the OS.
I’m certain it’s an OS issue. I was able to shut down using an USB recover drive stick but when I use the Computer OS, it won’t work.
Thanks

This is a Terminal Code fix I got off an official Apple Forum Discussion about this exact same thing.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8609245

1. rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/*

2. sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network

3. killall Dock

4. sudo mdutil -E /

5. Reboot

6. sudo softwareupdate -i -a --verbose

7. Reboot when prompted

I was worried to do it.... but with no support from Apple Technicians... one guy took ownership of my issue... a total joke, he never even rang me back after multiple calls and messages left on his phone, so I decided to take the plunge and try this... and it all worked perfectly... scary doing it.... but it resolved the issue.... installed the security patch and got me 100% back to a working macOS High Sierra where the Power Off could now happen once more without having to Force Power Off my computer every day.

Worst Security Update ever!!! :(

Thanks!
I’ll try this instead of reinstalling the OS. Hopefully I’ll have the same luck as you.
All the best!

....
I went through it but not nescessarily sure it worked. I could not get the request to reboot on the last line.
I end up trying to reinstall the OS and could not get that to work.
Finally on the process I assigned the start up and was able to shut down the computer without pressing the power button. Let’s see if that works in the long run.
Hopefully Apple can correct this mess with another High Sierra update.
