Not sure about getting an Intel Mac then I saw this..

I haven't watched the video, however don't forget that Linus is very much a PC guy. He makes Apple content sometimes, but I get the impression it's only because lots of us have Apple products. He doesn't rate them and is a PC person through and through. I remember when he made a video about switching to macOS (or OS X as it was at the time) and many of his complaints were because it was different to Windows as if the way Windows does something is automatically the right way. It was cringeworthy.

I'm not criticising him (honest!) I enjoy some of his videos, however he's not really a Mac person. I'd suggest watching a review by someone who is more neutral on such things.

Just saying... (bracing myself for the hate that will follow...)

So Calif
I'd rather have the smaller capacity SSD than the slow and awful fusion / spinning drive.

My old 2013 iMac has an external TB SSD for the OS and apps just to avoid the internal spinning drive.

The external drive runs circles around the silly internal spinning drive - no more spinning beach balls, no more 2 minute boot up times!

here was about that 21.5" was not updated at all...not what users choose ...of course in 2020 no one should even go with fusion drive....even starting with 2014-2015 no one should choose that option...in close all in one...f you dont have the budget for an big internal SSD storage...i always advice people to go with the minimum 256 and go external drive after

The reason he makes Mac videos is because Apple anything gets clicks, and his audience of gamer kiddies love that kinda stuff. Read the comments on any Apple video.
He's outright stated he plays the algorithm game, and I can't blame him for that.

No shade on your or Linus, you deal with YouTube, you gotta play ball.

All they did was drop the SKUs with spinning disks. The SSD models didn’t change at all.
I’m trying to come your way but your reasoning makes no sense whatsoever, Why in the world would Apple release a REDESIGNED iMac that will have a superior display(ProMotion 120hz, MicroLED anyone?), Apple Silicone processor and god know what else just BETTER than all current intel iMacs when they just released a new 27 inch iMac? Who in their right mind would opt and purchase this recently released 27 inch iMac if a far newer completely redesigned and future-proof Apple silicone iMac was released and offered at the same time?(So what if the redesigned iMac won’t be 27 inches..) I don’t buy the argument that “oh people that need windows will need the intel iMac which is why Apple will keep the 27 inch intel iMac in their lineup)

As to why Apple didn’t upgrade the 20 inch iMac (aside from the SSD at base level upgrade) may be due to lack of sales and the fact that people prefer the 27 inch far more which might explain why the 20 inch iMac only received an SSD upgrade at the base level instead of the 1Tb fusion drive it came with last year

Mac events are usually late October/November. I dint see a reason why they would want to be different this time.

1) It’s 2020 and there’s a pandemic.
2) The Keynote is all online
3) AS Mac’s are a whole new breed and could use a little spotlight time shared with the most popular product (iPhone)

This is new territory for Apple during a very unusual time. Anything could happen.

Theyre not being released at the same time? But also take a look at Apples history and you’ll find a few anomalies (especially during the intel transition) where they released a product, and then 4 months later they released a redesigned version. Amore recent example would be the last 15” MBP and then the 16” came out only a few months later. It’s not impossible for Apple to release the last intel 27in and then 4-6 months later come out with a redesign.

Apple will be constrained by how many types of SoC they can produce at different performance points at the same time. I think it is reasonable to introduce new systems from the bottom-up in this situation. So we will first see a raplacement for the 21” iMac, MacBook Air or MBP 13” this year and sometime Next year we will se more high-performance parts.

Actually Intel iMac was introduced just 3 months after the last iMac G5 was introduced in Oct 2005 (discontinued in Jan 2006). :)

You are not making sense, are you saying that Apple will release a brand new REDESIGNED arm based iMac by the end of this year? And by redesign I mean slimmer bezel, promotion display maybe, higher PPI and an overall better display, if that’s the case then why would anyone in their right mind purchase the 27 inch intel iMac with an INFERIOR display if both products would be available at the same time? The display plays a major part In the iMac and if a new lower end iMac would be introduced it would totally halt any sales of the 27 inch iMac that was JUST released.

If you’re talking about an arm based 20 inch iMac that is identical in appearance to the current iMac with the only difference being the processor then that could make sense

I am talking about a new 21” iMac with the same type of chip that would go into an MPB 13”.

If there will be a major redesign is more of an open question, but I actually believe there will be, both on the iMac and on the MBP. And yes, that would leave the new 27” looking dated.

Typically companies want to introduce new designs and new features from the top, because the profit margins are better and they get people to buy higher-end system, which they otherwise would not have considered. As stated, I believe Apple will be forced to a bottom-up strategy instead which makes for some interesting decisions.

Why would Apple screw people that go out and purchase the 27 inch 2020 iMac today if a redesigned far superior version (it doesn’t matter if display size is 21 inches, 24 inches or whatever it may be) with slimmer bezels and an all new design just around the corner?

Nobody is screwing anyone. The new chips were announced with a clear statement of intention.
Whoever bought the current iMacs either wanted intel or uninformed.

Apple has always done this so why be suprised?

No they didn’t, there is no redesigned iMac that was announced just yet and a brand new iMac 27 inch model was just released with a T2 chip among other welcome upgrades a month ago. Why would Apple release an OUTDATED intel model (Design wise) last month if this so called redesigned and far superior iMac is about to get released soon? I’d agree that maybe there will be a MacBook running ARM around the corner as the MacBook 16 inch is due for an update but why would they release a redesigned iMac so shortly after releasing the 2020 27 inch iMac and literally screw everyone that just shelled out over 2000$ dollars on a 27 inch 2020 iMac?

The redesigned iMac is surely going to be superior to the current 2020 27inch iMac in every possible way but why would they release it a month after releasing the 27 inch 2020 Model?

Remember there was a very short gap between the last PPC iMac and the first intel one. Less than 3 months IIRC.

So you’re saying the new redesigned iMac will come out in the next 4 months? your main reasoning behind this is the fact that the iMac 21 inch was not refreshed In 2020 like the 27 inch iMac was(T2 chip etc)? You also believe Apple could care less about anyone purchasing the 2020 27 inch iMac today and is willing to essentially “screw” anyone buying the 2020 27 iMac today or next week etc by releasing the brand new shiny completely redesigned Apple Silicone iMac in the next 4 months?

Nobody knows but yes this is the case, and it always has been.

People make choices in what they buy. Apple is a consumer product company in technology.
They have been crystal clear in their intentions, what else is there to understand.

Be informed or lose out. It applies to everything in life.

The current machines are intel. We are talking about Apple Silicon [silicone is a plastic.....]

I just sold my 2019 iMac so perhaps it might be wise to wait then, Would a redesigned iMac be on par with the i7 Intel iMac 27 inch Model in terms of performance?
