.... So the Core 2 Duo Chipsets are not "True" 64-Bit Support?
The only reason I ask is because I read this somewhere, "Santa-Rosa will be the first full 64 bit platform".. Meaning the Core 2 Duo's aren't??

Don't think the OS will see much of a difference between Santa Rosa CPUs and Napa CPUs. Both are based on Merom cores with only the pins of the packaging changing (Socket M to Socket P). Even the pin count remains the same at 478. Socket M C2Ds (Napa) are the first to include Intel 64, so they are as 64-bit as any current Socket P C2Ds (Santa Rosa). No new processors until Penryn in late 07 or early 08. No one knows what Leopard will have until it shows up but I would think there is very little in it that is Santa Rosa based.

How do you know? What if Leopard has been delayed for touchscreen support or something else along the same lines...

i think it's highly unlikely that we'll see full touch screen computers for at least 12 months. and i think a change that major would be giving us os 11.

however, i agree that there may be special hardware on the new imacs (a la front row with remotes or finger scrolling on the touchpads), or, for that matter, macbook pros, that will have special application in leopard. i just don't think it would be quite so revolutionary as a full touchscreen interface.

who knows, though? not me.
we'll find out in less than 3 weeks.

Good to see some familiar posters in the imac area...

Well, peeps, with eveyone talking about MBPs and MBs, do we get a new imac with Santa Rosa by the start of summer or not????

I need to do music recording this summer. I Ebayed my Core Duo imac to upgrade to C2D, but... I don't want to buy now if they are going to update in the next four weeks or so.

I fear that imac is on the back burner for now. Man, I hope I'm wrong.

No one can say anything for certain but if I were you, I'd wait until after the WWDC in about three weeks time. If Apple are going to be releasing any new products in the coming months, that's when its going to be. :)

Why are people so fixated with WWDC.
Surely Apple don't recognise the iMac as a Developer machine?

No, but its probably the biggest Mac related event of the year. The most likely times of the year for Apple to release new or updated products are the WWDC and MacWorld in January. Although its a developer event, there's no reason why they won't say "We're also releasing brand new iMacs".

If the case update doesn't come, I won't be buying a new computer until it does - and I've got a 5 year old 700 MHz G4 iMac.

I'm kind of with you. Owning the same generation iMac but with the 800 mHz G4, I've become accustomed to some things just not working on this machine. At the same time, I can do 75% of the things I want to do on it which makes me appreciate the value of an Apple. If this thing were a PC, I'd have already chucked it out the window.

In any case, I can wait until Macworld Paris if it takes that long to release a major overhaul. I don't know if Apple will wait that long. The longer the current form factor exists, the closer I believe we are to a major overhaul. I'd hate to purchase a new one that was speed bumped just to see a brand new design a few months later. Granted that a Santa Rosa iMac would be perfectly fine, I'd like to see some revolutionary changes like inclusion of Blu-ray, eSATA, Cablecard, and/or HDMI.

I would want to see a touchsreen iMac. I would use it for home theater.
You can already do that via third party, but it's expensive.

The Core 2 Duos won't take full advantage of Leopard??
Sure they will. Leopard works fine on the G4/5s, and as long as you have a good video card, the fancy effects work fine too. They aren't going to release an OS that doesn't work with stuff you just bought. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot if 99% of their users couldn't use it.

Yeah, like supporting full 64 bit memory addressing... oh wait...
All that does is give you access to over 3.5GB, which has nothing to do with Leopard.

New iMacs will be here eventually, but I doubt anyone except Apple knows when.

At this point, I don't mind how meagre the update is as long as it's worthwhile as I've been waiting so long.
A case redesign would be amazing and is overdue, Santa Rosa would be nice and a price drop would at least give better specs for the same amount.
Anything, really but soon. :(

Since when has it been a requirement of Leopard to have >4GB of memory?? How exactly would an iMac with a limit of 3.5GB of memory or whatever not be able to make 'full use' of Leopard??

In my imagination
I was at a retailer today, and was told that the new iMac is coming in three weeks. This person mentioned a processor bump and not a new design. We shall see...

Ummm.... yeah okay... this guy work for MacRumors, AppleInsider, or Thinksecret?

He was definitely speaking from knowledge of current/coming inventory of iMacs, not any Apple events.

So he has just about as much knowledge as any of us... the last time I checked we all kinda know about current and coming inventories of iMacs or we could ask around... maybe his stock is messed up.

We'll find out tomorrow if you get your wish. If SJ doesn't annouce anything, the wait may last through the summer.

This sounds like the best thing to do... I will take Sped's advice and find out tomorrow or wait until summer.

Design wise....

Maybe aluminum... like this:

(Really don't think so)

Ummm..... NO that is by far the ugliest and laziest mock up... how about this:

I think that's pretty accurate. The number of times I've seen info from somebody supposedly in the know makes me realize just how tight Apple's security is. SJ must have an iron grip on info control or lots of folks who work there are kept totally in the dark.

i wish i wish...

a flashy new 20" imac that looks like this: (posted by flopticalcube)
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa239/joelfagin/imac.jpg

for the same price as the 17" (RIP)
with: all the internal specs of the current 24"
PLUS: SR, maybe a little bit of touch screen, 2gig RAM standard, .mac for free and maybe bundled with this rumored iphone-like "@home" product replacing the (limited in function) apple remote... :p

g'night!
