Thanks all!

Got it all set up in the home office last night. Real happy with it.

I actually think the trackpad is sensational, the keyboard is JUST OK - it has more key travel than the macbook 12" which I'm very happy about and the mouse is probably not as good to use as the trackpad.

That said on the keyboard front I am SORELY tempted to pull the trigger on this keyboard from massdrop before it ends https://www.massdrop.com/buy/azio-mac-mechanical-keyboard It's got very good reviews, I just need to figure out which version to get. I want to get the Bluetooth version but need to confirm if I can charge it as it looks like it comes with the USB-C connector. I think I'm just not accurate enough with the magic keyboard - spending too much time backspacing typos.

I've installed the 32Gb of crucial RAM I bought separately - that was pretty easy and all detected fine. I've installed a bunch of my apps and data and have about 400GB free space left. I'm ALMOST thinking I should have sprung for the 1TB SSD, but as suggested I've got plenty of direct attached storage which you can see attached via a USB hub in the picture (and a NAS in the other room) so when space gets tight I can always shift stuff off.

Back at work this morning having been playing around with it till about 3am. Really impressed at how snappy it all is.

Tell you guys right, you will owe me a apology if I'm right and your wrong and vice versa, since we can't really bet on it :).

Cool - by the time I'm ready to upgrade in 3 or 4 years perhaps there'll be a sweet iMac 1st or even second generation iMac PRO worth upgrading to ;)

I'm considering buying very close to this configuration. Perhaps with the 1tb though.

What I wanted to ask is how would a higher end current iMac compare to a (same size) base line model on the next ones when they come out? This would mostly be comparing the video card and processor (right?) You would think, and perhaps be wrong that Apple will make SSD's standard if the iMac were to come out almost in the 2018, but hey .

If I were to buy one now I would want something that lasts about 3 years (which at that point would be 5 year old hardware) so I would get the upgraded components. But I was thinking that maybe if I could just wait it out a little longer then I could save a little money and have around the same computer by getting that base, but newest model. Or am I wrong?

What are you planning to use it for? If you can afford the 1TB SSD you can't go wrong - just ask yourself if you absolutely need it for your use case. I plan to just keep the FCPX projects I'm working on on local SSD and keep the ones I'm not on the attached NAS or USB3 attached storage. For around half the cost of upgrading from 512GB to 1TB SSD I figured bumped it from 8GB to 32Gb ram instead. I'll get the benefit of this immediately whilst the active data I have on internal SSD may not ever exceed 512Gb.

I have no doubt the next iteration of the iMac or even the iMac pro is going to be awesome. That said if you fully spec out a current imac and get applecare there's no reason why it wont last you at least 3 years. I see heaps of people going 5-6 years between upgrades.

If you buy this config Mac today (you don't even need the 395X just the 395) with a 1TB SSD I can't see how it wouldn't last you through 2020 as a powerful beauty machine.

I've just got mine delivered (1TB SSD + 2GB 395 + i7 4.0GHZ) and fully expect it to last at least 3 years if not 5.

Do you do really graphic intensive stuff? That is the only piece of hardware that is making big leaps year over year anymore.

Looks great! Glad you are happy with it.

Honestly for anyone buying Apples latest iMacs there is nothing to worry about. Apple has incremental bumps so its unlikely you'll ever regret buying one now vs a incremental bump that MIGHT come out in 6 months or whatever. This is why they retain such high resale.

Also with Apple you need to be weary when waiting. What will not be included on the new iMac? USB A is almost a certainty but it might have soldered RAM or something. Tough to say when it comes to Apple.

My only regret when I bought my 2013 is I didn't get it with an SSD which I'm considering upgrading it too vs buying a new machine. The OP wont have to worry about that since he got it pretty much maxed out.

OP: What mic is that?

It's the Rode Procaster mic. I am looking to go into podcasting and after a bunch of research this was neck and neck with the Heil PR40 so much that it really just came down to personal taste they are both so good.

Time will tell and I still plump for late 2017.

Are you planning to upgrade? Looks like you're running the latest and greatest at the moment.

Late 2019 if I don't fall off the perch lol. Every three years for me.

Late 2013.

Late 2016

Late 2019.

LOL, I wait 5 years between upgrading any pc that isnt for gaming, my gaming pc the only thing I upgrade is ram or the gpu.
I like to save money and keep things cheap and since performance leaps aren't huge I have no reason to go out and spend tons of money for a very little reason.

I think you'll have some decent choice by then!
Yep, this iMac will probably be faster than 5 years maybe 3-4 depending on OS support and what comes out, but I will keep it at least 2 minimum. I love it and its my daily driver, its fast and I like having a webcam which I have never had on a desktop till now. So I can finally use it for Skype. And for youtube videos.

Yep, Saw you mention that you are possibly going to get into podcasting, was curious what subjects you are looking into doing a podcast about. I have Never done one myself although I have listened to a few of them.

:)

I am so on the fence right now about buying a new iMac. They're so shiny! Congratulations on your purchase!

Going to podcast on Jazz Piano. Hopefully ready to go in 3-4 months.

I retired in 1999 and was smart, or lucky, enough to put quite a few dollars of superannuation payout into Apple shares. At that time they were $45 odd a share and the Aussie dollar was huge, worth some US$1.17, not like today. The dividends are enough to keep me in new iMacs every three years or so.

And lucky again, my birthday is June 29, so I was lucky enough to take advantage of our taxation concessions for investments and get a full year credit.

In college I am doing software development course and i need a new laptop or a desktop. I was thinking of getting a macbook pro to do my college work as well as some gaming. The games i want to play are fro example cod and fifa. Which one would you recommend?
Fifa doesn't work on osx. Get a desktop pc and you will get better value for your money and it will be able to play games

In what way is the design a little dated?
What else could you do to it apart from making it thinner and having a smaller chin.

In a similar way to a Model T. It's been around nearly as long as Noah and way past its sell by date. That is why when my 2011 machine finally dies I will be going back to Microsoft as they are now seen as the real PC innovators.

TC is simply a bean counter with no vision.

Looks really good, congratulations on your new iMac :) can I ask with it being 5K is the quality still good when viewing none 4 or 5K content? I'm waiting until later this year when Apple announce the new iMac updates before pulling the trigger and updating my 2012 iMac but I've wondered for a while now if the 5K screen is still noticeable when viewing other things like documents and general content that isn't 4 or 5K. Hope you enjoy your new iMac :)

Windows has not changed at all its the hardware that really changes, I left windows because the innovation has been stagnant since windows 7 and they just keep releasing junk. I really like Mac OS its a great operating system and frankly I don't need the most powerful computers these days all I do is a bit of video editing and checking forums and stuff, so my iMac is fine for that, and if I feel like gaming its at least good enough to play baldurs gate 1 and 2 enhanced which is good enough entertainment for me.

I just got tired of windows and Microsofts shady make you pay for **** you don't need ********.
