Probably at the end of Sept:

17" iMac
2GHz Core 2 Duo (Merom not Conroe)
X1600 Pro 128MB -> Pro 256MB upgrade

20" iMac
2.16GHz Core 2 Duo (Again, Merom not Conroe)
X1600 XT 256MB
1GB RAM standard

I'm guessing it would be a speed bump instead of a feature bump.

I'd prefer a conroe. Althought they might make the iMac's noisier.

Although i'd say apple will just stick with the PRO but make it run at actual pro speeds or put in the XT and run it at PRO speeds :p

wooot - i'll let you know if i buy it tomorrow :)

+ we get a free printer + ipod(rebate) if student. (just lie if not, lol)

conroe will probably end up going in the imac, ffs it had a G5 in it not too long ago.

What's 10W?

The LCD alone probably uses a lot more.
Conroe uses 10W more power then the fastest single core G5 in the iMac form factor. The poster is doubtful Conroe will fit within the thermal tolerances of the iMac G5/Intel case.

the G5 number is typical, the conroe number is for 100% load.

thus the g5 max load is probably about 70w or so.

I think in Auguest i might get an imac unless at WWDC some totally kickass comes out, and its smaller then the powermac case now. I want a desktop because of two reasons. 1, i can't stand having an 80 gig HD. even 120 is two small. Also i want to get final cut studio. which leads me to my next point, if i should wait for the update or not. I don't plan on doing much, just school projects and fooling around with motion etc. Also with the current promo for students. I don't need a nano, but it would be nice when my 5g is too big.
Do you think the next update will be worth it too hold off.
I plan on getting a 20" with everything updated. 2 gigs of ram, 256 video, 500 GB HD.....

Under typical usage a 970FX (the ones found in iMac G5s) uses no more than 25W. The original 970s used 50W typical and 110W max.

well i'm just saying any number IBM quotes is for typical, and for a 2GHz FX it was about 25 from memory, though the 1.8 normal G5 in the original imac consumed about 45w typical.

Hmmm... didn't all iMac G5s use 970FXs? I know that Rev. B and onwards definitely did.

Hi guys!

My name is Tim and I'm a german exchange student in the USA right now.
One of my best friends here is a f****** Mac geek and he (finally) convinced me to buy a Mac! ;)
Back in Germany I'm playing a lot of games on windows. I'm practically a hardcore gamer. That's why I need a Computer which runs windows.
I'm either thinking of an iMac with an Intel Duo Core or a DELL computer.
Right now it's like a 50-50 desicion:

iMac:
advantages:

-Mac OS X
-Cooler Design

disadvantages:
-video card(XT1600)
-price

DELL:
advantages:

-video card (XT1900XT)
-hardware in generell, since the iMac didn't get updated for a while

disadvantages:

-Windows XP

---------

So my question is now:

When is the iMac gonna be updated and what is going to be upgraded?
I already read the whole thread and it seems for me, that Apple is not REALLY upgrading the iMac.

Please help me guys!
Tim

hard core gamer? get a dell or better yet build your own.

as a hard core gamer, you should be concerned about future upgrades and expandability. the imac is very limited in this department.

Build your own if you're a hardcore gamer. Dell makes its money on the high end not the low balled Celerons they sell. They'll overcharge you on their gaming machines. You can save big on current Intel chips (Dual Core 2.66 GHz + Mobo for $139) or you can wait a month or two for Conroe from Intel.

yes, that is my concern, too.
There is only one problem. My mom gets the taxes (we have 16% taxes in germany) of the computer, so I have to buy a pre-build computer. Which means for me a Mac or DELL....

And another thing: I read this thread about HL2 on an iMac. It has 99 fps on there with all Settings on. When the new iMac gets released its going to have another speed bump which means HL2 is going to run even faster on the iMac.

I am assuming apple will be updating the iMAC name as well when this is updated in the fall?

G5 = mac pro's

imac = mac (?????)

mac mini (name stays)

powerbook = macbook pro

ibook = macbook

what will it mean for the ipod? will they dare change it to just the "pod"???

it will be interesting to see if they also offer white and black versions for the imac consumer line.......the color black seems to be doing really well for the ipod and macbooks.

Because getting 99 fps really matters when you can barely see beyond 60 fps?

yes, they really overprice their XPS machines. I configured my on Dimension and had a really good computer with the ATI Radeon XT1900XTX video card (which is the fastest card on the market) for 50 Euros cheaper than the iMac!

duh, I know that, but the 99 fps tell me that the iMac still has potential! :)
