Well for the 27" model, there isn't much for Apple to update thanks to Intel. Per the latest roadmaps from Intel, the first SKUs for Kaby Lake-S (the Desktop CPU) are not scheduled to ship until mid-December, with some SKUs not shipping until late March 2017. And that's just initial release - not volume production.

So really we are unlikely to see a new 27" iMac with Kaby Lake-S CPUs and AMD Polaris GPUs until 2017, which is why I believe if we do see a Late 2016 Update, it will be the current model with USB-C, Thunderbolt 3 and hopefully DDR4.
Thanks for that info.
Expecting to buy a 27 inch Mac in the fall - cheapest model with SSD flash 256 GB upgrade. Given what you described as updates, would you suggest waiting for the UBB-C, then reboot 3 and possibly DDR4 or settle for the current iteration orrrrr waiting for the possible March upgrades.
Thank you!

Sorry, not "then reboot 3" s/b thunderbolt 3

But why wouldn't Apple update the GPU at the 2016 release? Polaris seems to be on schedule for September release at the latest.

Do you think that Apple would pre announce the ship date of a new iMac if they intend to release a 2016 27 inch iMac?
Thanks

No I don't think so. Generally, for an established product line, Apple waits until the last moment to announce their update (to prevent the loss of sales)... An announcement would precede release by two weeks at most.

They are not they are using broadwell because the appropriate skylake desktop i5's and i7's with the better Iris pro graphics were not available last year when the iMacs were updated.

Still not available - desktop Skylake Iris Pro's will probably be available Real Soon Now though.

so you agree that it means "new" rather than "refurbished" as opposed to denoting that they have just released it, correct? thanks:)

No - the "new" label is in the main part of the store. It is the label that is added to recently released models.

I'm aware of that , was just sarcasm

The answer to that question really lies in what you are looking for. USB-C is a bit of a mess right now in terms of accessory compatibility and efforts are being made to clean it up so by this time next year things should be better. My only Thunderbolt device is a Drobo 5D and I am not sure it supports Thunderbolt 2 speeds, much less TB3. :) DDR4 will improve memory speeds so if you have memory-intensive applications, that will help. And if they do put in one of the new Polaris GPUs, that will both significantly reduce heat (the current R9s run quite warm) and improve gaming performance.

I replaced my original 5K with the Late 2015 model in March because I wanted the new wide-gamut LCD and the new GPU (the R395x is no faster on the games I play then the R295x on the original, but it runs a fair bit cooler).

But why wouldn't Apple update the GPU at the 2016 release? Polaris seems to be on schedule for September release at the latest.

If AMD can a) get Apple a reference chip early enough to design it into the Late 2016 update and b) get the production chips into volume production, then they might do it.

Okay.

when you go and buy a new car it has probably been sat in a storage yard and the showroom for 1-2 years total.

Still new and nobody questions this.

our supplier at works sells a macbook pro i5 new with lion still on it!

Don't you guys feel this has gone too far for too long? I mean, Apple has been doing this for decades now. I thinks its time for Steve to come back. :(

You're confused. If you leave the Apple store with a new iMac, it's a new iMac. This thread is talking about the "NEW" tag Apple uses to denote a recently updated or new product. It currently on the iMac page, for 2015 models, that are 6 months old. That's odd.

Hi everyone! I am appreciating all the good knowledge here around the Macs, haven't been able to find anything else comparable, so I would love to ask this question;

My 2011 MBP is in need of replacement. I have thought about waiting for the upcoming Mac Pro and the upcoming Cinema Display ($$$$ !!!). And then I decided on the beautiful 5K iMac. So my question is, if I get a top of the line iMac now with 1TB SSD and then want to replace it a year from now, what percentage of value would I expect to lose after such a transaction?

Along the same lines, my friend suggested i get the upcoming MBP + Cinema. I have never had success running an external monitor off of my MBP's (usually via DVI or what-have-you). By the time I plugged in a keyboard/mouse, FW drive and midi controller or two, the laptop and fan would go bonkers (Bluetooth might of helped?) Anyways, do you think the USB-C MBP would work like a desktop in such a fashion and stay cool and quiet? It would be great to have that portability!

fwiw, I think running a MacBook with a tb display as your "main" setup provides an absolutely terrible user experience. The thing heats up like you said, it disconnects, and isn't convenient at all.

It also just doesn't look good.

There are certain guys who are "laptop" guys which is fine, ok. They prefer using a laptop.

I'm a desktop guy so I like using a desktop. If you prefer working from a desk, you should get a desktop as your main because the user experience is far superior.

Of course what I did, is I just bought a MacBook Pro for mobile use but keep my iMac as my main machine.

But if you're working from a desk, you should just buy a desktop instead of hooking a MacBook up to a screen.

Just passed the 3 year old mark.

According to this link:

https://benchlife.info/14nm-kaby-lake-s-rts-ww50-06192016/

Desktop versions of Kaby Lake will ship end of December earliest. At CES 2017 will be the annoucement. Laptop CPUs will likely ship earlier (September ?).

So, I don't expect an iMac CPU refresh. GPU refresh could still be "on".

I still hope Apple will manage to release a model with TB3, USB-C and SSD only.

Puzzles me as well, why even no Airport models with 802.11ac.

It has wifi AC. Just old.

Cause the laptops and macs are over 18 months since an update ;)

240 days is brand new for Apple hardware these days. Heck should say "launched"

I suspect part of labelling had simply fallen off. It should read 'This product outdated when NEW'.
