It's about a $2 difference to Apple. Providing plenty of space that allows users to expand into, should they wish, isn't a bad thing or "overkill". It's not like natural resources are being wasted in vast quantities to provide the extra storage.
you're correct, instead Apple is creating e-waste b/c people buy the cheapest option and realize they need more space later. B/c it's not upgradeable, people are forced into buying a new ipad. I've see this happen to many family members who buy the cheapest apple option not realizing they'll quickly run out of storage.

100% agree. I've seen family members run out of space too. I usually run out of space then have to start emptying. This "trick" is something Apple are doubling down on with their disgraceful new advert on television that brags about having tons of space on their devices. 🤦‍♂️😡

It seems like they just want to force you up to the next model. Ideally I want to buy a 128GB standard iPad but base Air is about the same. 64GB is a joke so I would need to go for 256GB which is too much. At that price I might as well just get a base iPad Pro 11" with 128GB.

Instead of spending £499 I'd spend £899. I want to buy one for my girlfriend whose iPad is getting really slow now but the price are insane. the iPad is her main device when not using a smartphone. Maybe it's time we look elsewhere. Maybe the Samsung tablets are worth buying or getting a cheap laptop (that doesn't include a MacBook Air).
You can look out at costco or similiar selling last years version cheaper. My brother got a 3rd gen 256gb pro for cheaper than the refurb apple were selling prob = 30% off - wish id got it as my 2018 needs changing now. Just got to look for a deal i suppose. Its super crazy that apple, of all companies, sell 64gb models.

So would you be okay if Apple removed their entry level model and made 256gb storage the default model, at the higher price as well? After all, people will never know what they are missing if there is no cheaper model to benchmark against.

I'd be happy with this. Sales would tank and the price would be back down to something sensible the following year. 👌🏼

Yes, the cost difference to apple for 128 to 256 is about $3. I'd be fine if they marked up this memory 200-300% and charged everyone about $10 for the base model. This small change would have environmental benefits in terms of reduced e-waste.
