What does everyone think about new iPad pros coming in October this year or is it possible the new model listings are for other iPads and the Pro won't get refreshed until next year... maybe spring?

Im thinking of buying a iPad pro now but I am debating that I should wait if a new model comes out in October which will hopefully have a stronger chassis less prone to bending... worth waiting for or something that's been overblown?

October last year (2018) saw a very big update to the iPad Pro, a redesign and second gen Apple Pencil update. After such a big update, I can't see Apple updating the iPad Pro until 2020, think about the people that would be pretty annoyed if they announce an all new iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro typically gets a 18 month update, they usually offer something big during that refresh, first gen was the iPad Pro itself, second gen was the 120 screen, the 2018 3rd version was an all new design with an updated Apple Pencil.

I’m thinking they’ll come in March of 2020.

I was thinking along these lines too but maybe it will be a minor update and they will just give it the latest A13X and maybe strengthen the case internally. A Spring 2020 update makes a lot more sense to me but if the leaked model numbers are not pros then what are they do you think?

Another way to look at it:

We're expecting a big refresh of iPad Pro in Q4'20/Q1'21. This product will use mini LED (based on XDR). It's also expected to feature 5G and ToF camera. So it's unlikely Apple would launch any new iPad Pro in Spring 2020.

A light refresh for Q4'19 makes more sense given iPadOS and the talk about MPI antennas. There are too many registered model numbers for just a single 10.2" product.

Likely iPad Pro. Apple isn’t likely to launch a new iPadOS with all the marketing fanfare using last year’s hardware.
Agreed. It doesn't have to be a dramatic redesign or have any crazy new features-- this could easily be an "S" year for iPads with under the hood improvements (and hopefully any structural deficiencies addressed). People keep using the last few years as their reasoning for this "18 month" business, but it wasn't always 18 months between flagship iPad releases.

It could easily stand to reason that, with iPhone sales leveling off or declining, that they would double down on iPads, especially given that they've seen growth in that segment of their business recently. I also think iPadOS has turned a corner in getting the iPad to be more useful and productive, increasing the number of potential customers for them.

Time will tell, I guess!

My first gen 12.9 died last night. It just went blank while I was using it, and now won't start. So assuming I can't revive it, which I will have a go at today, I am looking for a new iPad.

That's what I was thinking too. I use my iPad every day, but I think I can manage with my iPhone and Macbook Pro for a couple of months to see if new models come with the IPadOS release.

I assume iPadOS will be released during their September event, so do you think they'll introduce the updated IPP during the same event. Surely this would make sense from a business perspective, as JPack stated.

Then during the October event (if there is one, I assume the MBP16" and an update to the 2018 Basic iPad.

In the market for an IPP too, if it means waiting a month for a new edition, it sounds about right.

I believe if they are updated this year it will be a relatively minor upgrade. New CPU, and maybe they bring 6GB to all storage tiers. Maybe a couple of camera upgrades too. I can't see much more than that.

Do you think OLED will be on the cards, or a baseline storage bump to 128GB?

If it's just a minor update internally then I'm going to see if I can get the current model for around £600 or so, see what kind of discounts show up over the next few weeks.

There's all sorts of talk about new SKU numbers, but I'm led to believe they are all for the 2018 iPads which do need an upgrade at some point this year.

I’ve been waiting on OLED when Samsung introduced them in their tablets, but I highly doubt we see them anytime soon.

Apple pays Samsung a ridiculous amount of money for their OLED displays, that’s why the iPhone X saw a jump in price. Until LG or any supplier are able to compete with Samsung for OLED panels, we won’t see any OLED in iPads.

Credible reports are saying Apple is going with mini-LED, which makes sense given LED can meet if not exceed OLED performance.

I'd be surprised to see anything more than a CPU bump although I won't be buying a new iPad Pro until it's confirmed that the chassis is made from a stronger alloy. All the bending issues means I won't be parting with my money until it's resolved.

why would people be annoyed if they announce a new iPad Pro? We’re only 5 months from 2020. The latest pro was released in 2018. However, I don’t expect a redesign this year either. Probably the normal spec bump. I bought my 2018 12.9 on launch day. It’s over a year old. I still love it and won’t “upgrade” until 2020, but it’s not going to annoy me if Apple changes the design. It’s like vehicles. People buy models all the time even before a redesign. That’s never annoyed me either. A little research will either make people buy now or hold off. No big deal.

Some people say yes, some people say no.
I guess in the end we'll have to wait and see. I think Apple is prepping new iPad models, given the rumors floating, but is the iPad Pro part of that? I don't know

Because some people do get annoyed when Apple stray from their usual update cycle. The iPad Pro is currently on an 18 month refresh cycle so updating it after 12 months would probably annoy some people. It has happened in the past, remember the iPad 3 and then Apple came out with the iPad 4, i remember people posting about that and they were not happy.

Personally i wouldn't mind Apple updating the iPad Pro around October, i haven't updated from my 2017 version yet.

That was totally different. They released the iPad 3 in the Spring then 6 months later released the iPad 4 in the Fall and I clearly was part of the group that wasn't pleased by it. I understood why Apple released it so soon, the iPad 3 clearly wasn't ready... but 6 months was way too soon. IMO, Apple should have released the iPad 3 that Fall instead of the Spring.

It’s actually not on an 18 month cycle. The first update was after less than 15 months, and the second update was after 17 months. So average 16 months.

I had originally been guessing early spring, but with iPadOS coming and Ming-Chi Kuo’s 2019 forecast, I’m now predicting fall 2019.

6 GB across the line seems very likely, and a base storage of 128 GB is also a possibility.

I stand corrected, but none of those updates were 12 months. I personally don't have a problem with there being an update later this year, however I can see the comments now "really Apple you released the iPad Pro in October, I just updated" is one.

Do iPad's really need 6GB Ram, the 4GB is not that much less, I highly doubt an extra 2GB is going to be noticeable. I guess it depends what update the iPad Pro gets.

The point stands that they updated it earlier than usual. Whenever Apple do this, people on these forums like to complain. Mind you just lately people like to complain about Apple in general so there probably isn't much difference now a days. "Tim Cook is the worst" "It never would of happened under Steve Jobs" to name just two of the regular ones.

6 GB is apparently noticeable with some more complex apps and given that Apple ALREADY has a 6 GB model, developers are starting to target that.

iPadOS makes that even more important given that with its new features, along with the new pro apps coming this year, the iPad Pro becomes much more viable as a laptop replacement.

Will I personally need 6 GB any time soon? Probably not, but given the choice of a 4 GB 2018 model at refurb pricing and a 6 GB model at new pricing, I personally would choose the latter for sure.

IMO it’s likely that Apple released a 6 GB model in 2018 to give developers a big hint what was coming, and to allow them to prepare for this in advance, to have everything in place for the release of iPadOS.

I understand you're point. But 6 months... that's rather unusual. And it was the SAME year, not different lol. I've only had 2 complaints with Apple in regards to product releases.

The iPad 3 & 4 issue and when Apple released the 1st generation iPhone with 4GBs then later 8GBs while dropping the price of it. And the iPhone issue came under Steve Jobs
