Finally no new bugs after seven years (10.5 Pro).
None of the "cheap" iPads (all I need) come with 512MB, and nothing has an audio port (non-round earbuds don't fit my ears, and I'm at my limit for junk I need to keep charged), so the next few years will be interesting.

This year seems the worst in terms of leaks. I get why it’s harder for Apple to control supply chain leaks but this is all software. What is going on in Cupertino?
To be fair, the leaks have been all over the map.

So far I’ve seen:

- All devices that supported 17 would get 18. I was hopeful for this but not optimistic.

- All A10 and A10X devices would get get excluded from 18. I didn’t believe this, as I expected (hoped?) iPad 7 would get 18.

- iPad 7 would get 18 but iPad 6 and iPad Pro 10.5 would not. I felt this was a strong possibility.

On the flip side even Mojave's last Safari, which is <3 years old, gets stuck on major sites (not to mention no WebP support)
FWIW, I’m not using Safari but I do get Finder WebP support in High Sierra through the use of a free plug-in.

With Chrome plus the WebP plug-in, High Sierra was actually viable surfing machine, but recently as you say, the third party browsers have now dropped High Sierra.

Though the iPad Pros from 2018 might be supported, many of the features will be restricted to iPads with M series chips. Waiting to see what features will be added to my 2020 iPad Pro

Oh FFS why? These devices are running perfectly fine. There are so many use cases for them. Shame on you Apple. Eco friendly my ass.

I think some people are confused in this thread because “iPad Pro 2nd generation” means two completely different generations:

iPad Pro 11” A12Z
iPad Pro 12.9” A10X

We shall see in half an hour but for me at this point the only real reason I’m interested in iPadOS 18 is RCS support.

I don’t mind if it means they are allowing more power and functionality on the new iPad OS, eg better file mgt system, better multi tasking, MacOS apps
Unfortunately I think the odds of that happening are not in our favor. It's been how many years now, and there hasn't been much improvement.

Anyone who still thinks Apple actually cares about the environment is truly blind. Their "stance" is nothing more than virtue signaling. Nobody cares about their carbon neutral campus. The millions of fully capable devices they doom to ewaste for the sake of sales shows their true colors.

Just about everything Apple and these other silicon valley companies do is counter to messaging they give us.

Yes the OS's are getting bigger and slow things down, but at what benefit to the user? Rarely do I discover something new in the OS where I say, "That's a cool new feature." Siri hasn't improved in ages, HomeKit is riddled with bugs, searching for things in files is a joke, no real changes in the core apps like Mail, Contacts, Safari, etc. What's with all the processing bloat?

Typical Apple arbitrary software requirements.

I feel like we made progress when iOS 13, 14, 15 didn't drop anything, now it's just dropping stuff left right and centre.

A10X + 4GB of ram = Bad
A10 normal + 3GB of ram (inferior in every single way) somehow = good

Very un-environmnetally friendly.

They can't even tell us what is still getting updates and what isn't. iOS 15 was getting regular security updates till they just randomly stopped in March, no rhyme or rhythm.

You seriously can’t expect them to support ancient iPads forever. The iPad 6th gen got one more update than it should’ve gotten IMO. It shouldn’t have gotten iOS 17. It’s slow as heck on it. And they shouldn’t allow rooting. It’s a security risk and it doesn’t fix any security issues. iPads get 6-7 years worth of updates. That’s more than enough, and they still get security updates. And just because your iPad is flawless, doesn’t mean it’ll be fast enough to run a new major iOS version.
If you believe that the iPad lifespan should only be 6-7 years (and more than enough, at that) then it is irresponsibly wasteful to make them out of material that would last 100 years.

The main problem with dropping OS support for a device isn't the lack of new OS-level features. Apple already disables a lot of new features for older (but still supported) devices anyway. The problem is that apps eventually stop targeting older versions of i(Pad)OS because they use certain APIs that are only available on newer OS versions. This eventually leads to a lot of service-based apps to stop working.

You could of course blame the app developers, but Apple sometimes makes it notoriously difficult to support older OS versions while also supporting the latest devices.

what about the vast majority of the materials that go into making your car? sure, the rubber will degrade but the steel? cracks me up people that make statements about what is eco friendly and the least eco friendly thing is the cars they drive every day.

What business do you own that doesn't survive by selling things? Would you have apple stop trying to sell? Then how many updates would you get? the devices aren't doomed, you have the choice to use them if they still suit your needs. But what about security risks you will cry? Well just who creates those risks? Not Apple. But your fellow citizen. But of course it's evil Apple's fault for not supporting old equipment.

I called this months ago that iPad 7 would get another year of support. Disappointing if they don’t bring the A10x iPad Pro along for the rider.

Rooting would mean, that you could load a linux distro and therefore use the device for other purposes. I'm not talking about opening up iOS as such.
Thanks for the clarification, am not familiar with this.

I agree. If Apple bothers to launch a Final Cut for IPad Pro, it means the MacOS apps will not come anytime soon.

But hopefully Apple will surprise us. M4 ipad sales seems bad. I kind of suspect that Apple has been working on what we want, but they also want to delay it as much as possible. If sales dips, they might have to dig into their drawer plans, just that it will not likely happen this year 🥲
