New iPhone 5s - any reason to not upgrade to iOS 9.1?

My dad got s new iPhone 5s.
It came with iOS 8 installed.

It is his first iPhone so there"s no settings or content to be concerned with.

Is there any reason to not update to iOS 9.1?

Battery life could be affected. My 5S with 8.4.1 lasts less than 5 hours with many battery-draining features turned off. Consensus seems to be in that range (on this forum + my friends who have 5S). With iOS 9, I've heard of 5S owners getting the same or worse battery life.

iOS 9.2 should be out next week, or the one after. It should fix many of 9.1's shortcomings.

I had the audacity to update my main device (5s) to iOS 9.1 after running iOS 8.4.1 for quite some time (up until yesterday).

You will encounter some performance issues, but after using it quite a while, it's really not that annoying. I used to complain a lot about lag in the Control Center and Spotlight Search and whatnot, they're there but not that intrusive.

I like the battery life improvements, the Spotlight Suggestions, and the new font. Other than that, I could've stayed with 8.4.1 for even more months.

There isnt really any reason not to update IMO. I would go and look at Apple.com and see the new stuff in iOS9 and go from there. Also there are multiple threads about iOS 9.1 and 9.2 that seem to indicate the 5s runs well with it. I especially like the new font and Safari is definitely better than it was on iOS 8. It seems more stable as well. I am using iP6 so cant say from experience about the 5s, only what I have read. I am happy with it myself.

A family member of mine recently got a new iPhone 5S that came with iOS 9 installed. I've played around with it a bit and that thing is crazy fast. I saw no animation lag or stuttering. It feels faster than my iPhone 6 with iOS 9, which was upgraded from iOS 8 but not freshly restored.

Quite strange to have a NEW iPhone 5S with iOS 8 installed ....
BTW there is not a single good reason not to install iOS 9.1 on it. It runs great with iOS 9.

A broken record .... My wife's iPhone 5S runs just great with iOS 9.1
I owned an iPhone 5S at launch, a wonderful device, maybe "the best" iPhone so far for some aspects, but now with iOS 9.1 it is even better.

Omg.. so not true. And also in this context since it's his father's first iPhone he won't recognise a 1 fps drop.
To the OP, you should upgrade to iOS 9 and with iOS 9.2 (probably) next week it will be even better than it already is.

A little search about his post history would give you the picture about his presence here.
I totally agree with you: even if a slightly drop in frame rate exist in comparison to iOS 8.4.1 , no one out of picky users of a geek forum could recognize it. And surely not the OP's father at his first iPhone experience.

He sold his iphone 4 for the motox, and afterward constantly complained he was left out of imessage and facetime and icloud sharing etc. When I got my 6s we reshuffled the phones and he got a 5s. If there were real issues on 9.x I would know about it.

Oh, it's very true. The 5s and above lag with iOS 9. It's not too significant, but it's there. You can definitely notice it with Control Center.

However, all lag can be obliterated by turning on Reduce Transparency, which I have on now. I tried to make my home screen look as nice as possible with that on.

Please leave me alone with this Control Center frame drop nonsense. I don't know what you guys are doing but I swipe up the Control Center with one quick swipe and its impossible to notice any lag.

There are people keep posting YouTube videos about "lag and stutter" in the Contro Center where there is just NOTHING WRONG to see
People keep opening and closing the Control Center (what's the meaning of that ??? ) just to see a 2-3 fps drop and point out how bad iOS is .... This is getting ridiculous.

It's not just the control center, it s also: spotlight, notification center, the music app UI, swiping pages, rotating keyboard, quick reply.

Don't use spotlight. Haven't seen it (sic: don't have it) on Notification Center nor swiping pages. Dont use quick reply and will try to rotate keyboard.
