I wouldn't be surprised that Apple offers a 16 GB 3G nano in black and Product Red colors by the end of March 2008. The reason is simple: they need to compete against the Creative ZEN 16 GB and Sandisk SANSA View 16 GB models now selling for US$200 to US$250.

And it will be a hot seller: a lot of people don't want the extra features of the iPod touch 16 GB and just want a flash memory-based iPod with more than 8 GB storage capacity.

You nailed my situation exactly. I prefer the iPod, my iTunes library is set up just the way I want it... now it's on Apple to deliver the goods. If I wanted a Touch, I'd buy one.

I just bought a Classic. The reason I bought the Classic over the Touch is because I hate the interface for playing music. It's a royal pain on my iPhone. I like the convenience of just manipulating the touch wheel.

The iPod nano is more limited in terms of capacity compared to the Zen and A820 since those use 2 NAND chips while the nano only uses 1. Given that the iPod touch has a 32 GB model, a 16 GB nano is possible. Maybe next week (given that this week is SDK week).

I don't see a 16gb nano for a little bit, apple is VERY likely to drop the 8gb touch as the iphone now has a 16gb model, and there is a 8gb nano, its just kinda hard to mix, an 8gb nano and touch is okay, but the new 16gb iphone messes it all up. so the 8gb touch is going. there may be a 16gb nano, but not in the near future, maybe the next update will be software stuff, bigger battery life

Here's the problem. Apple's iPod line is just too large, but I think they know it.

iPod Shuffle 2
iPod Nano 2/4/8
iPod Classic 80/160
iPod Touch 8/16/32
iPhone 8/16

That's 11 iPod models...

I'm thinking that the iPod line will be condensed soon, and it'll look more like this.

iPod Shuffle 2
iPod Classic 32 (nano sized)/96/160
iPod Touch/iPhone 16/32

In an ideal world, all iPods will get BT and maybe BT sync.

P.S. That touch interface.. I like buttons!

Looks likely, but I like my 2.5" screen on my classic, not going any smaller, unless apple is going to put HDD's in the touch and make it like the"video" model, then im going for the 3.5 inch!!!:D:D

I like the idea of 96gb of flash, but as someone told me when I suggested 48gb will come out after 32g, that there is great change of mistake and using the wrong chip in the wrong slot.

I think that would be a huge mistake. If Apple updated the Nano again without a capacity increase, that will be the final straw for me (and many others, I'm sure).

I'm already chomping at the bit for more capacity. Another update without an increase would only further delay that from happening.

in a matter of weeks, the ipod touch 8gb will simply vanish into thin air... hopefully so will the iphone 8gb... therefore we will be left with a 16gb iphone/touch and 32gb iphone/itouch, hopefully iphone with 3g... i dont think apple will bother very much with nano.. maybe they will remove it and introduce a small-sized 30gb classic....

Why is this the prevailing sentiment? I don't see how a 30GB HD based Classic would fit the same niche as the Nano. Plus, why are they forging ahead on new projects involving the Nano (the Nike+ gym thing) if they're planning to discontinue it shortly? Something doesn't add up...

my thoughts exactly, i don't know why there are people who are trying so hard to find a reason to kill the nano when there is not one.

small 30 GB classic? that would be going backwards, there are a lot of advantages of flash memory over hard drive memory, and there is no way they could make it the same size as the actual nano

I don't think that's the prevailing sentiment though, just of a few people.

I think you hit it spot-on, except maybe for the 96GB. Otherwise, that lineup would rock! :D

Hang on a second

if a 16gb nano was to be released this would cause competition between it and the iPod touch (and for those who dont know its not an iTouch, but an iPod touch - it greatly annoys me when people try changing its name).. The competition would be great if there were both a:

1) Nano 8gb / Touch 8gb
2) Nano 16gb / Touch 8gb

If people chose which iPod they purchased based on their music library size, im sure they would also consider the extra features of the iPod touch as opposed to the nano, as it is becoming greatly like a PDA....

I think the nano will remain at 8gb for quite a while, wont discontinue it but allow it to remain the same, simply to benefit from Apple+nike thingy...

IT is a small device and 8gb is good enough for it. I can see its popularity increasing with time, but dont think further upgrades would be neccessary.

Thats my point, so the 8gb touch is going bye-bye.

I sure hope so... I can understand not wanting a cheaper product to encroach on your flagship line, but restricting the capabilities of the lesser product to the point that it can't compete against competitors is not good business sense to say the least. I would sooner buy another company's product than buy the touch. As I've said a few times, it does not meet the needs I have for a MP3 player at all... but the Nano is perfect (minus the capacity issue).

The iPod line isn't as crowded as you make it out to be.

shuffle 1/2
nano 4/8
classic 80/160
touch 8/16/32

That's 9 models. The iPhone is sold as an iPhone.

What is most likely to occur?

shuffle 1/2
nano 8/16
classic 64/128 (when SSD prices go low enough; there's bound to be a reason Apple decided to give the iPod the "classic" suffix, as in it's not going anywhere)
touch 16/32

Nothing again today? It's like Apple reads these forums and does the opposite of what people want...
