I was just browsing best buys website and came across a new lifeproof case. Has anyone heard of it ? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/nü...54925555&skuId=8935663&st=Lifeproof&cp=3&lp=2

I just had to chime in because this definitely excites me. I tried out 3 different waterproof cases for the iPhone 5 and the screen protector was always an issue.

I'm totally tooting my own horn here, but about 2 months ago I posted that a case without a screen protector like the LP Nuud (for iPad) would be ideal for the iPhone. Let's hope that turns out to be true!

WOW. This seems like a really BAD idea!!!

Unless the consumer fully understands what they are buying.

If the seal is just around the front iPhone glass (no screen protector) then it will be water/sand/dirt proof....however wash the dirt/sand off, so don't rub it off...or it will scratch your screen.

I see on the iPad version, a screen protector is not recommended unless it is a Lifeproof protector, especially made to be thin.

Of course the plastic screen on the Fre needs to be handled properly too, but bare glass, is bare glass.

Just an observation.

This is sweet, but only if it will work with one if the glass screen protectors, which I have a feeling it won't, because they will probably make the phone too thick. I'm interested though!

One of the reasons I want to use a LifeProof case is for protection against the very fine sand that blows around at the beach, and in that one instance I wouldn't want the screen exposed. I read somewhere that the case is compatible with some stick on screen protectors.

Edit: Duh. Now that I'm thinking about it, just put on the Nuud case and then cut a regular screen protector to fit the exposed screen. The case would still be sealed against the iPhone's screen as intended.

They did change the Fre design once that I know of. I'm not sure I want to be an early adopter of this one. The other issue I had with a LifeProof case is that it prevented the inaudible ultrasonic "signal" from reaching the phone to get ShopKicks at stores. That sound is broadcast out stores' muzak speakers and picked up by the phone mic to verify you are in the store. Pretty cool but I'm easily impressed.

A friend of mine who I used to work with at AT&T is now a Lifeproof rep. I ran into her Wednesday (the same day they announced the nuud on FB) and she said she was told July 7th was the release date.

The Best Buy site also says Availability is 7/7/13. Here's hoping it is then if not sooner. Looks very promising.

I'm returning my Lifeproof to ATT today (the last day for returns) and waiting for this bad boy :)

In the meantime, I'll be sporting my 4 :)

My amateur observations on this...

1. Since it seals against the iPhone screen and doesn't encompass the phone I would say this is not a water proof case, just water resistant. That is the verbiage they use on the BB page as well.

2. Since this leaves the screen exposed, I'd say calling it dust resistant is a stretch.

3. Either this case is covering the speaker and microphone ports using waterproof membranes, likely leading to the same sound issues as the current case or they are left exposed making it less water proof/resistant.

It seems like they are trying to solve the bubbly-screen issue at the expense of water and dust resistance.

It's fully waterproof. You still have the option to protect the screen yourself against potential scratches. And then there's still the Fre model for those looking for all-around protection, albeit at the cost of using a terrible integrated screen shield.

Water is touching the screen of the device. That by definition is NOT 'waterproof'. Yes there are seals that prevent water intrusion from the interior of the device so it shouldn't affect the electronic operation of the phone but as anyone with a glasssed in shower can tell you, even glass is not impervious to the effects of water, especially salt water. In addition, previous lifeproof cases haven't exactly been super-rigid. One little tug on the side and that seal is split.

I definitely wouldn't trust the seal of a tiny O ring against a $10 plastic screen protector either. All it takes is a hair-line scratch to ruin that seal.

No, this is a very, VERY water resistant case suitable for 90% of people, but I would not trust it in the nearly same conditions as a fre.

They do state "waterproof" and state up to 6.6 ft for 30 minutes. What's more, these cases will all be tested for their "waterproofness" (is that a word?) in Lifeproof's facility so you are no longer required to test it when you get it. Which is kinda nice.

I have yet to see water leak through glass? I would be interested to see such a thing actually. And this includes salt water. But remember, if you are really skittish about it, you can pay an extra 10$ and get their waterproof warranty as well.

If this works out, it would be great. In my opinion there is entirely too much play in any case to trust a big open seal. That's why all of these waterproof cases have itty-bitty screw in port covers and reinforced port snaps so small that oem cables barely fit.

And I never said water leaks through glass... water fouls glass. Take a look at your shower after a few months or your sunglasses after a few minutes at the beach. Salt water pretty much destroys everything it comes in to contact with. Their screen protector may be enough though if it can maintain the seal.

Regardless, my big problem with the lifeproof was the horrendous sound quality issues. If nothing else, with a nuud you're almost guaranteed to get their latest membrane/structure revision so hopefully they will have a better hit rate.

All said, I won't be the first to test one of these, but I'm eager to hear what people have to say when they get them. It would be ideal for someone like my wife who needs rain/spill/accidental submerge protection without the bulk of a defender-like or the issues of a fre (assuming they fix the sound).

It's not water leaking through glass that is the concern.

I'd worry more about long term degradation of the oleophobic coating. It is not designed for harsh chemicals (chorine) etc. or perhaps seawater.

However given the short life of most phones, two years, it probably will be fine. Scratches are another thing altogether. Wash rinse sand off, don't run it off.

Personally I think it's the greatest innovation in waterproof cases ever. They seal the same as the iPad case with a gasket that sits around the screen with pressure on it. I have the Nuud on my iPad and have no issues with it at all.
The main problem with all waterproof cases was mainly the screen LifeProof have fixed this. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

I dont know if you have a screen protector on your ipad, but do you think having a screen protector on the iphone affects is waterproof seal?

I was thinking of getting a BodyGuardz Pure glass for my screen along with the nuud, but worried it might not seal properly

I don't have one on my iPad, only use screen protectors LP recommend. You don't wanna take a chance on the seal not being right. They will have info on which screen protectors will work with the case.

I am definitely taking my Fre back for this case once it comes out. I hate the screen protection on them.

Also everyone I know or have seen online who has the Nuud for the iPad absolutely LOVE it, and have had 0 problems with it. Granted thats much more of a surface area to seal, but still I think it will work great.

I was planning on preordering it through bestbuy, but then I thought about the shipping.

Instead of waiting for it to ship after 7/7, I'm just gonna head to best buy and get it on release day :D

anyone else doing it?

It may be just as waterproof as the Fre, but my main concern is dust/dirt since I am an archaeologist. If I need to use a screen protector with this case to keep my screen from scratching, I might as well spend $10 less and get the Fre for use at work and use a regular case with no screen protector when I am not in the field.

But that's just my opinion....
