Don't know if anyone has posted this yet... but the new Mac Mini is delayed because.... I want to buy one, and Apple clearly hates me!

Hate to disappoint you but it isn't you. The mini is really delayed but Apple doesn't give a hoot. It is kind of funny how one of the premier companies in the world can't seem to be able to do two or three things at once.

The product line is so full of holes that users buy other brands instead of an Apple product. Consider the full-sized, BT keyboard. How tough of an engineering job can that be to make the Apple full-sized keyboard BT. Other companies advertize them. Even the tried and true wireless with a USB dongle would do. Apple would sell a ton of them. I need two right now!

Also consider monitors. Apple's Cinema Displays are even more primitive than the 2012 mini. Is an Apple Store a museum store?

So true! It is getting to be rather pathetic. Maybe they are selling so many iphones, ipads and nMP's that they simply do not care. They already have too much money as proven by paying BILLIONS for a damn headset company. Lack of a full sized wireless keyboard! I mean, really???

Sad doesn't begin to describe it. Are computer sales going down solely because of tablets & smart phones...or more likely because there have been no significant advancements in years? In fact, totally neglected. Even if they kept routine upgrades happening I'd have bought a couple new machines in the meantime.

With hundreds of billions in the bank there's no excuse to not at least refresh the line on a regular basis. Hire more people, sheesh.

Why does it matter so much? Have there been huge advances in tech of late?

The current basic Mini is probably still all the computer the average Joe or Jill needs. For those whose needs / desires are a bit more demanding, tricked out models are available to suit many…..

Except perhaps antsy MacRumors geeks who (regardless of their real needs) constantly hanker after the next big thing the moment it is developed, if not before.

Yup. We need to know that the company we support so well supports us back. They have PLENTY of hiring money. That is one of the best ways they could give back.

To me this comment completely misses my argument as to why I would never buy a current mac mini.

Yes the current mac mini would completely satisfy my needs and of course I can upgrade it and it would be well beyond my needs.

BUT I will never pay top dollar for technology which is 2 years old. That is my sticking point. I wouldn't care if the new mac mini was 3 years away, but only if the current mini's price point reflected the current market. Not the market it was released in 2 years ago.

This. My 2009 Mini is fine for me. I would like a new Mini I don't need one.

I used to change my Windows machines every 2 years as they used to stop working/jam up. Now I have a 5 year old Mini and we are all complaining there isn't a shiny new replacement for us to drool over and buy.

Top dollar for tech that is 2 years old? Give or take a tweak or two, the current Mini is not far off present day tech.

The real leading edge stuff costs a pretty penny, and Mini's have always been a bit behind the state of the art…. and is priced accordingly.

The nominal price of a Mac Mini has come down a little over the years. Inflation adjusted they have come down a lot.

Here in Thailand my first Mini (base model, bought in 2005) cost about 25,000 baht ($US 770, at the present exchange rate). As it was my first computer, with all the peripherals I coughed up over 40,000 baht….. nearly seven weeks pay for me at the time.

When I replaced it in 2009 I paid just 22,000 baht for the Mini, and 5,000 for iWork. My pay had gone up a little (though far below the rate of inflation), so all up it set me back about a month's pay. I had replaced the UPS a few months before, but did not have to replace any other peripherals.

Now I could buy a base model Mini for 19,000 baht, and iWork would come with it. I would have to get an external optical drive, which I could do for about 1,000 baht. All up I would be looking at about three weeks pay…. maybe three and a half weeks if I added a new monitor to replace the one I bought in 2005 (which, unfortunately, has not gone up since 2007, and has increased by only 12% since 2003; inflation has seen the price of most things nearly double, or more in that time).

The price of the current Mini seems like quite good value priced as it is now…..

I am not complaining….. My early 2009 Mini remains OK for my needs, and I am certainly not antsy about getting a new one to drool over and claim bragging rights to.

I have upgraded the original 1 GB of RAM with an extra 4 GB, but that is all.

The time will come when the HDD will need to be replaced, when it is full or fails. Then I'll decide whether it is worth replacing the HDD with an SSD, or it would be more cost effective, and appropriate for my needs, to replace it with whatever is current at the time.

One factor is that having started on digital photography (some of which is used by the local press) now I could do with better software, such as Aperture. My Core 2 Duo Mini could handle it, but something more recent is recommended. However, it is not urgent….. with the camera I have now iPhoto works just fine.

IDD i'm not complaining but i also want to put SSD in my mini but on the other side isn't it better to save for a new one and don't buy a SSD (+-100$) and sell my current mini (+- 200$)

So i have 300$ to invest in new mac mini...

Just want to know if i have to do the update or not...

Also everything works perfect for NOW but will it transcode HD movies on Plex in the FUTURE???

Plex already recommend a 2.4GHZ CPU... i'm 'stuck' with a 2000mhz cpu...

But it's like u said it's a 5 year old computer that still does the trick...

That's a great point. The least they could have done is reduce the price. If that was their policy you can bet that would light a fire under their ass to refresh the entire line.

Tim said he is going to introduce products in 2014 all year. What happened to that?

He's been too busy stashing & shuffling profits in offshore accounts.

While you may make that value decision; there are sufficient numbers of customers who are buying the Mini - as is, to not prod Apple to spend hundred of thousands (if not millions) of dollars in devoting an engineering team (in expensive Silicon Valley) to a non flagship product.

There could also be internal political dynamics; with the iPhone, iPad and MacBook team heads having more clout than the poor sob heading up the Mini team. More clout leads to more resource allocations.

Yeh, your right.

As a retired engineer and having to deal with internal politics, I have to feel sorry for that person and the team for probably getting no respect.

I currently own a 2008 iMac and I feel that I want more juice for the work I do with it (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere and After Effects - but in terms of video, I don't edit big videos and I don't use too many effects). I can't put anymore RAM so I'm stuck with 4Gb and an SSD won't do miracles on it.

An entry level iMac could be enough for me, but I already have keyboard and mouse and I want to use two 24" 1080p screens and the iMac is 21.5", besides, having the iMac screen plus one different screen is kinda...mehh.

I could buy a current Mac Mini with the best processor available on the configuration options and buy 16Gb RAM and an SSD after to save some money, but that HD 4000....that is something I can't accept. The difference in performance compared to the Iris Pro is a significant enough that I won't buy the current Mini:

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+2600+PRO&id=572
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Intel+HD+4000&id=2
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Intel+Iris+Pro+5200&id=2562

So, I'm not the average Joe and I need a new Mini (with at least an Iris Pro) and YES YES YES the damned thing is currently overpriced!

They will introduce the new mac mini at WWDC, what are you not understanding?
If its new they want to make a little presentation after OSX, like macbook air last year with haswell
2 more weeks doesnt kill you

YEAH ... and a little price drop like with the MB Air would be cool ;-)

Serban, I am not challenging you here but why are you sure they will introduce the new Mac Mini at WWDC and what if they don't? What then?

Personally, I hope you are right.

there are 2 options..introduce the mac mini at WWDC, or they will discontinue it. But i am finding hard to believe Apple will no longer want to sell its most affordable mac

I'm in desperate need of a new desktop. I've been my using my laptop as my main computer for about 6 months now. I had an HP tower with windows 7 but that thing finally bit the dust.

I HOPE the update the mac mini at WWDC...

I hung on to my old C2D Mini for years and finally upgraded the moment of the last update, late 2012. It's still a (relative) beast for my non-gaming activities, 2.6ghz quad core i7, 16gb ram, 1tb Samsung EVO SSD. Absolutely love it, it flies for my usage.....but no-one in their right mind who visits forums discussing tech should even consider buying one now. You'd have to be banana's or in dire need of a new comp if you bought one now, 16+ months later, regardless of how it's still an extremely competent computer.

With one notable exception (Thunderbolt Display), whenever I buy Apple stuff it's always within 3 months of a refresh. That way, any updates occur, silent or otherwise, I just shrug my shoulders and tip my hat at glorious progress.
