I know why the new mac mini is delayed.

It's because Apple knows I'm waiting for it and they just want to piss me off. They are all watching in the back room as I struggle with my Mac Pro 1,1 wondering how long I can hold off.

Right there with you (except a 2,1 which is basically the same as 1,1). I just went through the trouble of replacing a failed logic board in my Mac Pro to keep it running while I wait. Probably going to upgrade to Mavericks soon and hope I don't have any serious issues (I currently run Mountain Lion, and the machine won't sleep properly, which I assume is because it's unsupported and hacked to run ML).

If only Apple would bring back the design of the older Mac mini... that thing is so much more beautiful than the current one.

The new body looks more modern and better.
This. I'm not a huge fan of metal – I think white iMacs and MacBooks look far nicer than anything that's followed – but the current Mini enclosure is nice. I prefer the proportions of the original Mini though, ie taller and with a smaller footprint.

Me too…...

I prefer the proportions of the original Mini though, ie taller and with a smaller footprint.

…...which is one reason (among a few) that I am not likely to update from my 2009 any time soon. The main reason, however, is that it is still fine for my needs. Installing an SSD some time is the only upgrade I am considering at this stage. With that it would probably soldier on for several more years.

On the other hand, if a new Mini on the scene I'd consider the cost effectiveness of going for a new one.

Either way, I'm not antsy…… happy with what I have for now, and make decisions when the time is ripe.

I'd just like it to look like a bigger Apple TV, my Mini sits under the TV most of the time so black is better than silver/white.

Apple is compiling all the recommendations from this site as to give everyone what they want. [sarcasm] :apple:

I thought apple complied a list of recommendations and things people wanted from the site and expressly REMOVED them from the end product to p"ss everyone off

Funny but I always preferred the look of the white macbooks, emac and imacs too although I must confess to liking the current silver grey mini design to but I wish it were a bit thicker.

Appearances aside, the one thing I definitely do appreciate on the current mini design is the accessibility of its components. I was sweating bullets when upgrading the previous mini's RAM, heh! Having said that, there was something very endearing about the design language of mac's from that era. (white iMacs, white MacBooks, etc.) While the current machines are undoubtedly better, the plain jane look of grey metal seems somewhat dreary now.

Indeed, I have a late 2006 mini that's still going strong as a simple HTPC. It's amazing how flash video uses up most of the Core Duo's CPU time now though.

I'm a bit more antsy than you - my mid-2009 with SSD and 8GB ram does well still but increasingly I'm running into slowness problems as I run a lot of programs and tend to spawn a lot of web tabs. It's time to change for me.

Because Apple doesn't give a crap about Macs anymore. It's all about iOS these days. Thankfully my 2011 Mac Mini still runs like a champ.

Even MacRumors doesn't give a crap about Macs anymore, 9/10s of the articles are iOS.

Its kind of the chicken & the egg w/ Apple though. Ya, desktops sales are down but they're down even more by not putting as much r&d or importance/marketing on them. Perhaps if they made it more of a priority sales would be improved.

Next Mac Mini

If we see the Macbook Air laptops refreshed with a Haswell speed bump in early May then it is possible the Mac Minis could see new models using the same Haswell processors.

It is very strange the mac mini has not been updated for such a long time but not without precedent. Mac Mini has never been a priority for Apple. It never gets the newest tech internals. Therefore I doubt Apple waits to release a Mac Mini with Broadwell and bypassing Haswell.

Given the new design of the Mac Pro I hugely doubt the Mac Mini gets a redesign this year which would take the shine away from the Mac Pro. I imagine a Mac Mini redesign in 2015 is probable which would allow a pcie ssd as standard.

You know, somewhere around last October I bought the external CD/DVD drive so that I'd be ready when the mac mini updates.

Well, I'll still be ready when the mac mini finally updates. In fact, it's looking like I'll still be ready this winter, when the mac mini finally updates.

My wild-eyed guess about what's causing the delay? It's that Apple intends both the Mac Pro *and* the mini to be built in Texas, and the mini is therefore suffering not from design delays but production delays, as the Mac Pro delays knocked their plant's planned schedule out of whack.

Also, if it's going to be announced at WWDC, wouldn't we be starting to see benchmarks popping up by now?

So is Zed

It's really sad. I have family members who I am telling to hold onto what they have, and wait for the mini to be updated.

And if the mini isn't upgradeable, then several in my family are going back to PCs.

Goodness, why ?

PC's. More viruses, blue screen of death, more issues with programs, etc, etc
I to want a new Mini that is upgradable, but I'm never going back to a PC. ;) :apple:

Less expensive, can choose to get an expandable one if you want. Lots of programs. These are family members who could go either way. Can't really justify the extra cost when it's set in stone now.

For me, I'll stick with my 2012 cMBP until it breaks down and dies. I am really torn on this anti-consumer direction apple has taken.

i don't have anything nice to say about this situation, in particular or in general, so it's best I say nothing at all….sigh....:(

Apple needs to think of something...

With all of these new small/mini itx/desktop pc's that is coming out for the "windows o.s." side I think apple needs to think of something that will catch our attention..

HP just launched, i think, the 800 series mini desktop that has 6 usb 3.0 and can connect 3 displays. It can also be configured to have the 4th gen i7 processor. Size wise, I think it is similar to the mini.

One of the things that apple needs to do here is to make it easier for us to upgrade parts. example adding a 2nd hdd, make it as easy as possible and no need to buy extra cables just to be able fit one.

Thanks. I am keeping a very close eye on that HP 800. I have needed a computer I can recommend to Windows friends/clients.

You're welcome dave. I am also interested on this HP mini desktop but will wait for reviews first.

More viruses? True, but to be fair, I've almost had no issues (just odd things that get blocked by AVG) with viruses on my Windows 7 PC.

BSOD? Haven't had one yet on my current PC.

What issues with programs are you talking about?

Agreed on the Mac mini being up gradable. But they way Apple is going, probably not going to happen.

Hackinosh provides the best of both worlds. OS X plus the expandabillty of PCs. Yea configs can be tricky, but it can be done.

But for me Windows 8 is a disaster and wouldn't go to a PC if you paid me. Hopefully Windows 9 will be better. :)

I don't like how Apple is "closing" Macs up, even more than they were. OS X is the main reason why I use Macs...although a Hackintosh might be an option one day.

As per other posters I am never going back to a PC. If there isn't a Mini refresh I will have to think about buying a recent Mini second hand or another machine, MBA vs MBP vs iMac - probably a laptop with my j. I am sure I am not alone and Apple knows customers are thinking this way so not refreshing the Mini probably only has a small impact on their revenue.

Yup. I need for it to be as quiet as the mini. It seems to have almost the same CPU but a Haswell I think, so a little better graphics and possibly cooler running?

I will be very interested in reviews. And it is a bit pricy too. Nevertheless, so good to see a mini business class computer. Dell will be next :)

Apple isn't redesigning the new Mac Mini, because they already have a case for it. They're just trying to make everything fit.
