Why not just buy the base model of the 14 inch MBP with M4? Overall it’s much better than MacBook Air and you can get good deal on all major internet sellers. 60Hz display is just a joke.
The base price is $500 apart. That drops to $300 if your MacBook Air matches the 512 storage of the pro. That’s a pretty big difference for a very similar computer, unless you really need the extra ports or higher refresh rate of the pro. And you say that retailers have the pro for less, which is true, but they also discount the air by about the same amount, so the price difference remains. Air is also thinner and lighter. Both products are great and do substantially overlap, but there’s definitely room for the air.

For my purposes: By the time they release the M4 Ultra, I might as well wait for an M5 pro.

Handbrake on my M4 pro MacBook is smoking my 2019 Intel iMac which was still a lot faster than my M1 Mac Mini. I sooo wanted an excuse to get an Ultra, but this staggering keeps holding me back. Saves me money I guess🤷‍♂️

You have an M4 Pro that it seems is smoking everything you need it to do. Why would you buy an ultra or anything else?

People have been predicting the next huge crash since the last crash, what 15 years ago?
Exactly. Im happy with my M2 Air but a M5 MacBook Pro might be tempting. I’ve always regretted not just going for the pro models and now that they have the texture display.. might be worth it.

Looks like a press release will be there by around the 15th of January. Only a processor upgrade with everyting else remaining the same. Would like to see some new colour for the laptop.

Given how this will almost surely be “new chip in the otherwise exact same computer”….

One wonders why it’s not out already

Feels a bit artificially spread out to juice sales along the way

I wonder how many folks opt for an M4 MBP that would have perhaps gone MBA had it been an option

I believe Apple realizes the economy is tanking. much more layoffs incoming.

So Apple is trying to rush as many products out to market before the bottom of the economy falls out.
If Tim Apple realized the economy was tanking (knew for absolute certainty that the economy was tanking), he definitely wouldn’t add more production. Overproducing right before a recession is a quick and easy way to lose a ton of money.

The simple truth is that nobody knows anything about when the economy will peak or when the economy will bottom. If they tell you that they do, they are either lying to you or lying to themself.

You can certainly make predictions based on data. Of course. You can do your best to predict an outcome based on an available data. But predictions are just that: predictions.

Bigger, heavier, and it's not a completely enclosed computer with the absolute minimum number of moving parts. And I value the better display for "about 3 fiddy", but apple charges much more for it. The only upside of it for me is the hdmi port, but for that price I can spam all of my bags with adapters.
I am actually considering the M4 Air precisely because it has a normal LCD display

mini-LED is the worst by far when it comes to eye health. Feeling wise, the EMFs are off the charts - I've now switched to always wearing blue blocker glasses, it helps a bit. Not sure if because of blue light or just generally having something between my eyes and these millions of LEDs but it feels better.

Older screens are much more soothing. My MacBook Air is fine.

My eyes aren't really good enough to see the difference in quality, which I am sure exists - it's just not a normal day to day concern.

There has never been a time when I used my older MacBook Pro models, or my M1 Macbook Air, where I thought "man, I just wish this display was better". Never.

The display on those devices is very good. Improving on very good may be important for designers and photographers, but I don't care. I'd rather have a LED display with less EMFs and less power draw.

Probability that these displays will have the nano-texture coating?
I would assume they will have the option. I mean the iMac does now. Seems like Apple is bringing it to all Macs. Makes way more sense on a MacBook than anything.

Based on the reports we are seeing, the M5 seems like the biggest jump in Apple silicon, particularly in power savings and transistor count. They should simply refresh the entire lineup with the M5 next year.
