I don't really care about the idle temp.
What I want to know is the temp at full load.

Would you please try handbrake encoding and tell me the temp?
If it's lower than 60, I'm going to sell my MBP CD and buy C2D MBP!!!!

Do you undervolt Gurutech?
I guess you can run your CPU at the lowest voltage setting all the way up to your highest frequency.

While playing KoToR at max possible settings I am able to place my mbp on my bare thighs with absolutely no discomfort, and KoToR takes a LOT of juice to run, even with the lowest possible settings, and I have them all set to max.

Btw, what programs are you all using to get the temps? Does CoreDuoTemp still work? I was afraid and didn't install it because that's what messed my last macbook up, at least had some part in it other than Apple's faulty machines.

Well. I'm waiting on a free software. However, based on the C2D users in this thread, I get the impression that new C2D MBP are way cooler. If this is true when CPU is at full load, I will switch to C2D asap!!

Someone please check temperature while doing handbrake encoding and tell me the temp!

I waited for that one too, since May. So I could not wait anymore.

Dunno if this helps, but i ran a terminal command that maxes out both CPU cores for about 25 minutes and my temps never exceeded 71C in fact it was a range of 68-71C and idled at 49/50C.

All this time the laptop was on my lap and i didnt feel ny discomfort infact the improved fans were blowing cold air onto my lap. My brother's MB runs up to 87C at maximum and idles around 64/65C.

MacKarl, no, I'm not undervolting. I'm new to OS X and haven't even figured out how to shut off a core, yet.

The temperature monitoring software I'm using is called, aptly, Temperature Monitor.

I just got my C2D

So, I just got my C2D 15", 2.33

I installed Temperature Monitor, and I'm installing World of Warcraft. It's a bit warm in my lap, but nothing serious.

CPU Core1 and 2 show 62 celcius at max. I havent seen higher. Hows that temperature compared to the first gen?

This is *exactly* what my original MBP does when I run FanControl, Idles around 49 and gets to around 70 under full load. Does the new c2d MBP have to ramp the fans up to keep it around 70C? Mine, when the fans get going (to about 3000-4000rpm), never goes above 70c or so.

Hmmm.
I encoded a bunch of AAC files to mp3's (itunes hit 46+ speeds  ) and Core Duo Temp said I hit 75C, bu the fans never ramped up.
Anyway, the MBP C2D still seems, at worst, as hot as my former Macbook got.

Ok, here's my experience with the new MBP C2D...It gets pretty warm, the left hand side is warmer than the right hand side...but it does not get as hot as the previous CD MBP. The CD MPB would burn me when I had it on my lap....I can now call this laptop a LAPtop...so it is a lot cooler...

Hope this helps

Quoted from PC Magazine....
" That's a good thing, as we'll see shortly, because the new CPU can run hotter when pushed hard than Intel's previous Core Duo mobile line."

Thank you for the input. Good to hear that the new MBP C2D is cooler.
Still waiting for the number though ;)

Idle temp of around 45 C sounds really pleasing however!!
I can only reach this idle temp by using the Fancontrol with around 2200 RPM.
I'm bit more curious about the full load temp.

After the replacement of my faulty left fan, at full load, my MBP never exceeded 75 C.
Before I realized the problem, my MBP once reached 91 C. Pretty hot huh? :D

running windows xp makes my c2d mbp run warm
does anyone else notice this? Even with the fans speeding up.

i think osx can manage the heat better and it runs cooler. (and it does)

according to smcfancontrol it idles around 44-46.

17"

Am i correct that the current 17" MBP runs a little cooler than the 15" due to having extra surface area? If so i am looking forward to some really good temps when my new 17" C2D arrives.

I don't know if you have read other posts but Apple redesigned the back of the Macbook Pro, helping the airflow(whatever you call it)

The problem was not the chip (CD/C2D), the problem was the design of the previous MBP...

Final Gaming Temperatures

Final Gaming Temperatures:

After raiding Blackwing Lair for 4h 16m last night (full clear!), in World of Warcraft, the MAXIMUM PEAK my CPU Temperature achieved was 62 celcius. This was running Ventrilo, mail app, Safari to update DKP, etc. All settings highest, full screen, and getting 40fps minimum to 92fps maximum. Awesome, and incredible... it just blew me away.

There you go. This thing rocks. I'll install Bootcamp later, just so I can have some "legacy" support.

It's also important to note that I keep the ambient temperature in my room fairly warm.

Nice to see that the new models are indeed running cooler. This is good news.

How hot does it get when playing some cpu/gpu intensive games in Bootcamp? (like Half Life 2, UT2004, CoD2, etc)

CS Source through bootcamp runs very hot. I'm not sure if i want to run it for extended periods of time. The fans during gameplay are on high, but slow down once i quit Source. I might get a laptop cooler if i want to game with this in windows (which also causes the heat).

Have you tried rmclock? I undervolt my MacBook when playing games.

The gearheads at Maximum PC were testing the very newest Intel Core 2 Extreme (of which I think Merom is stripped-down portable version, no?) in September. http://www.maximumpc.com/issue_date/september_2006/

These guys were practically leaking clear stuff about how great the Core 2 is. It's faster than anything else before, by far, and it runs significantly cooler. They actually turned off the CPU fan and ran some DVD encoding on it and it _still_ stayed cool.

It seems that Intel engineering got something right with their upcoming generation of processors. How nice to get state-of-the-art hardware in a Mac! I've been waiting ten years for this.
