Super exciting. Surface Pro 4, Surface Book and new phones! Definitely going to go for the new Lumia 950/XL and pick up new Surface Pro 4. Pretty insane that the Surface Book packs an Nvidia GPU with GDDR5 with 12 hour battery life. Microsoft is back!

Whoa - the Surface Book detaches into a tablet!

Really impressed and totally surprised by this conference. MS is crushing Google and Apple with the presentation and products. I love it. Keeps everyone on their toes and pushing harder.

You know, I am so impressed that the dock works with the Surface 3, Pro 3 and Pro 4 and the new keyboard works with the Pro 3 as well. MS gets my respect for not forgetting SP3 owners. As a SP3 owner, I don't see the need to buy the 4 now so the dock and new keyboard will likely be what I buy this year. That Surface Book is my next purchase in the new year.

Really well done by Microsoft. They have actually listened to what we, the users, have been saying. Even just the SP4, with what looks to be a much improved keyboard and pen, would have been a good announcement, but the Surface Book (other than the terrible copycat name) is a truly revolutionary product. It's fantastic that Microsoft is giving its engineers and designers this much latitude to design new products and then really refine the details.

Not going to lie, it definitely feels like MS just dropped the mic on both Apple and Microsoft this morning. And that's good. Healthy competition is a good thing for whatever products/companies everyone supports.

I'm not sure I really think they are relevant to each other, the surface book is a laptop and more comparable to the macbook pro than the iPad Pro. Now if you can argue the surface pro 4 against the iPad Pro, they are closer.

Perhaps, but in the end it doesn't matter. They will still compete, and the option of being able to buy a fantastic tablet that docks securely to a real laptop keyboard base, and adds a dedicated GPU has got to be appealing to many of the same creative professionals the iPad Pro is targeting.

Surface Book...

The MacBook Pro 13" seems silly now.

The MacBook 12" seems silly now.

The iPad Pro seems silly now.

Considering is was a huge fan of these Apple products, this is really something.

Apple likes to stick to traditional form factors, but Microsoft saw the light a few years ago and is now miles ahead in their game. Whatever Apple plans on doing for the iPad and MacBook lineup, it cannot be as versatile and innovative as the Surface Book. The Surface Book, for a design student like myself, sounds like the perfect solution (problem being the situation in which I own both the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro and can't really get all the power of drawing to my laptop without workarounds).

Maybe this is just all too early to say, but I like having my initial thoughts on here. I'm also still not considering moving ecosystems being a long time Apple user (well, just the 8 years I've really been using computers and mobile devices anyway). We'll see what the future brings us, but it's probably going to be exciting (with a change of copying?).

So what's the more smarter decision to buy?

Macbook pro ($1299) + iPad Pro ($799) + pencil ($99) + ipad keyboard ($169) = $2366

or the Surface Book for $1499

Or even MacBook Pro 15" @$2300 (or higher) and the rest... Apple needs to hurry to this new product category of the future.
