Since there is no boot screen for GTX570, so I still need using Ati 6870 for installing Lion, rite?

You can go straight from SnowLeopard to Mountain Lion, but I guess it depends on how you're installing it. Probably easiest to install with an EFI card and then switch, I was just pointing out that the installer works with the Fermi and Kepler cards out of the box.

As you stated don't install nvidia driver for mountain lion, do what does it mean by "running lion with the driver from nvidia"?

Since there is no boot screen, and if there is no other osx in other hd, there is no way to install mountain lion with GTX570, rite? I still need to use ati flashed 6870 to do the os install, rite?

How are you installing the OS? Do you have a DVD or some other physical media? If so, you should be able to install Mountain Lion with the GTX 570 card. If you have access to an EFI card, then yeah, it's probably going to be simpler to install ML with that card and then switch afterwards.

Thanks for your advice, finally I did success to install mountain lion withGTX570, without any nvidia drivers install.

Wonder if any shortcut key that can make the usb mountain lion installion boot? If not, if I burn the mountainous lion as a disc, and GTX570 installed, this means I cann press 'c' in dark screen and starting the os installion?

Mac Pro 1,1 GT 440 and Quadro 4000

I have a mac pro 1,1

I just put in a GeForce GT 440 and a Quadro 4000
Using the Nvidia 270.00.00f06 driver for 10.7.4

Displays are plugged into the GT 440. The Quadro 4000 I am trying to use for GPU Processing (no displays plugged in) (but if i do plug them in they do work)

Both are showing up in system profiler and CUD-Z is also recognizing both of them

However when I run After Effects it says no CUDA because of "incompatible CUDA Device or Driver".

Any Idea on how to get the Quadro 4000 working for GPU processing on MP 1,1?

Why not ETI cards?

I don't quite underatand why most new cards aren't EFI. With Win 7, manufacturers were supposed to use EFI in their machines.

Someone would have to write al those EFIs.

And EFI machines can still use legacy BIOS, in fact they ALL do anyway.

When you boot any Mac GPU it says "Hi, How are you? Who are you" via EFI then runs the card with the grubby old 1980's era PC BIOS.

New machines with EFI aren't supposed to be including BIOS. That, at least is from what both Intel and Microsoft are stating. So, by now, EFI support should be standard in all new boards intended for those machines. Both the hardware and firmware should automatically support it. And, if it does, then it should work on the Mac Pro. Mac drivers are an entirely different issue.

You are making some unfounded assumptions.

I don't believe that Apple's EFI is the straight stuff.

And I am 100% certain that any EFI "MoBo"s shipping have full, 100% ability to deal with legacy BIOS devices. So there is little reason to rush.

I guess I'm saying that even when GPU manufacturers start including EFI on their boards, there is no reason to believe that it will be 100% Mac compatible.

It isn't that nobody wants to SELL cards that work in Macs, they just don't want to offer the support. People do REALLY stupid things, leave out pertinent (but potentially embarrassing) details, and sometimes just outright LIE thinking that they know best. They also makes assumptions about what is important and then shade their questions and responses to fit the world as they THINK they understand it. So the support person has a difficult job just doing Windows support.

In short, nobody wants to support all those cards on yet another OS. So, while it is likely that drivers will continue to allow many cards to work POST boot, additional Mac cards that are sold and supported as such will be few and far between.

You don't "believe", which means that you don't know. Even if you were correct, it's just a minor difference. The point is that as long as it doesn't involve hardware, which is the main problem now, then it's a minor firmware fix. We've already seen ATi deliver a card that supported Apple and others, though I forget which card number that was.

Of course they want to get more customers. The OS is irrelevant. There was a robust graphics card industry for Apple for a long time. But when Apple went to the iMac, most of the computers they had couldn't accept a graphics card from a third party. It isn't the OS they don't want to support, but rather that the Mac Pro sells in small numbers, and that Apple supplies cards for them, leaving a very small market to sell into.

did you install CUDA driver?

I did and I have the latest 5.0.24 Cuda Driver.

Is there anything special I need to do with 10.7.5? I'm currently running 10.7.4 with my 570 and installed the nvidia drivers manually and all the cuda config changes. Will I have to re-do that?

It sounds like I just need to install 10.7.5, and maybe get the updated drivers from nvidia.

No, the 10.7.5 update has newer drivers than the NVIDIA 270.00.00f06 driver for 10.7.4, and your card should work fine right out of the box. You should update to the latest CUDA driver, but in terms of graphics acceleration, it's safe to update.

Of course, if NVIDIA does release a new driver for 10.7.5 then you'll want to update, but for now, you should be fine to just run the Software Update.

Ok cool. Also I just realized i meant opencl and not cuda.

I guess this might be a stupid question, but I would just like to be sure.

Will it be possible to use dual 620's or even just a single 620 with a Mac Pro 1.1?

I will be able to survive without it until next year, but it would be nice to swap my existing 6800 (I believe) with two smaller GPUs so I would be able to use 3-4 displays instead of my existing dual displays.

The GTX 6xx cards can drive 4 displays each, I would wait and see if a driver update enables this before going and buying 2 cards. However, those cards really seem to need Mountain Lion to work, and of course, Mountain Lion doesn't work with a MacPro1,1.

GT440 2GB Cuda

HI MacVidCards,

Do you mean at least 2GB for CUDA operations for any FERMI card under 10.7.5 ?

GT440 is available in 1GB GDDR5 and 2GB GDDR3 packages.

You will probably have to right click to install the parts separately. But I would guess that it would work.

Just tried with an Nvidia GTX560Ti. Worked fine except for EFI boot screens.

Going to try a GTX560 Regular next, it has HDMI and MDP.

Hello,

Could you please help me find the way to get EFI boot for the EVGA GTX560 TI (1GB)? I'm in near LA so I can bring the 6-pack if you need it... =)

Thank you in advance!

Hey, just saw this. I was on "Time Out" for letting the peanut gallery make me cranky & unpleasant. A few days relaxing and a handful of Prozac and I'm all better again.

Would love to help you with the 560, but fair warning...I don't drink cheap beer.

Can't seem to PM you, can you PM me?
