Seconded, and some Cinebench scores would be cool too!

quite confusing this thread...

IS ANYBODY ABLE TO CONFIRM the possibility to run a GTX-580 3GB in an original Apple Mac Pro ?
(2010 version)

and if yes, what does it need to make it work ?

- with External PSU or just a Cable Adapter?
- possible to have it next to the original ATI 5770/5870?
- Driver situation? (Lion Version / Which Drivers from Nvidia)
- which GTX580 3GB model did you buy exactly?
- other factors?

I hope some people who actually tried/use this in person can report!
thx :)

Cinebench is an AWFUL tool to test Mac GPUs.

Even running just the "OpenGl" part is basically 100% CPU limited.

Just about any Nvidia card I throw at it gets within 1 fps of each other.

And due to driver differences, a AMD 4870 outscores a GTX480.

Cinebench can only tell you how well a card runs Cinebench.

If you want meaningful results, CUDA-Z shows CUDA bandwidth and Uningine can give you an idea on 3D abilities and OpenGl throughput.

As far as GTX580, all has been answered 3 or 4 times.

Just about ANY Nvidia card from 8800 to GTX580 will work with those new drivers.

no boot screen, display will fire once at desktop

not enough power for 480 or 580

For those of us using Cinema 4D, Cinebench IS the way we benchmark CPU and GPU performance, and since there is a wide scale of figures already in place, it's something to gauge each card by!

Real world usage in Cinema itself, ie screen redraws, performance before levels of detail degrade etc is the best wy of course!

Bad news in that I am quite certain most Nvidia cards score within 1 fps of each other

One of 4 things

1. Cinebench is not good test. (even as predictive of Cinema 4D)

2. Nvidia drivers not playing well with Cinema 4D

3. Apple drivers not playing well with Cinema 4D

4. Cinema 4D not playing well with OSX

When I am next on my MP I will screen grab my Cinebench results, they are rather humorous. (in a sad way)

... my real world tests show these results
mac pro 2006 dual 2 @2.66 : cb score ~3 (100%)
mac pro 2010 dual 6 @2.40 : cb score ~14? (460%)
but using c4dvray the newer mac is 5.5-6.0x faster than the old model

Those figures look like CPU render scores though!?

I exaggerated, my Nvidia cards all scored within 3fps of each other.

Note that a G80 based Quadro 4600 frequently outscored a GTX480

The 8C/16T @ 2.26 are my 4,1 and the 4C/4T are my Quad 3.0 1,1.

The "Pre-Release GK104" is a GTX680.

All of which are soundly beaten (by 1 fps) by either a 4870 or 5870.

I just can't take either these results or their renderer very seriously.

Hello,

Your results are very strange. The 5870 and 5770 are mac edition?

I asked the question because with my 5770, I've got a little more than 40 fps.
And with my new GTX 560 Ti, more than 31 fps.

PS: please, excuse me for my english, I'm sure I've made many mistakes.

Cinebench R11.5 is extraordinarily CPU limited. Newer versions of Cinema 4D are much better about this (e.g. latest version is R13 already), and stress the GPU a lot more. Hopefully a newer version of the benchmark will be released one of these days, because R11.5 isn't really that great for comparing modern GPUs.

I also expected much more !

I get 25.68 on my old 8800GT on a MP3.1

Right, that's because the GPU just doesn't matter in that specific test. When the app is entirely CPU limited, you could have an infinitely fast GPU and the score wouldn't change.

Hello,

I have a little problem and I hope that you can help me.

I bought a generic GTX 570. When I receive the card, I've got the surprise of noticed 6 + 8 pins connectors instead of two 6 pins.

Before sending it back, I wonder if it's a real problem. A technician from Nvidia answer me that : "The card shouldn't be withdrawing more than 219 W from the power supply of the Computer so there is no need to worry about that."

Can I just use an 6 pin to 8 pin power adapter?

Thanks for your answer and your help.

Ashurao

PS: Please, excuse me for all mistakes. I do my best to write correctly in english.

Thanks for answer.

I have to admit that I was not able to refrain from connecting the card, and it works perfectly, just with two 6 pins. But the fans, I don't know if it was the computer's fans or card's fan and I have to search, are very noisy.

Dear all, reading through this thread has been very educational, so thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. If I may, I just have one relatively minor query, but it matters to me given my work environment.

I wish to upgrade the card in my Early 2008 Mac Pro from a GeForce 8800 GT 512 Mb. From what I have read, it seems that the most straightforward route is still a GTX 570, meaning no extra cables (please correct me if I am mistaken) or installation of drivers beyond those in OS X 10.7.4 (I have the latest NVIDIA drivers installed also).

There are a couple of options available, but I would prefer to go for the most quiet - my 8800 sounds like a Ferrari, and the noise in my quiet studio drives me spare. Would anyone be able to recommend a particular build of this card over any other? I've noted ASUS and EVGA builds, and one or two others - some have one fan, some have two or three. I'd like to select the one that is most quiet and which plugs in with as little tweaking/additions as possible.

Any advice gratefully received.
Many thanks,

Al.

Has anyone experienced problems with a GTX570 on steam games?, i have Portal2 and Team Fortress2 and when almost finishing loading the level then freeze and back to steam.

Cheers

Just FYI in case anyone cares, I installed a Zotac GT 440 into my Mac Pro 1,1 with no issues. I used KextDrop to pull the Kext out of the package (as stated in page 1). I am now running three DVI Monitors: 2 off of the GT 440 and 1 off of the 7300GT that came with the MacPro 1,1. Obviously I have no EFI boot screens on the monitors hooked to the GT440, but that's a small price to pay.

I went with the GT 440 because I wanted a fairly low power vid card that could get enough power supplied from the PCIE slot directly. Eventually I would like to throw in a 550 or 560 as well (and pull the old 7300GT out), but for now I am really happy with my setup.

Dear all,

As I'm using mountain lion GM, and having GTX570, after I right click the 'paylord' file and unzip the tar file, there are several files, and please tell me which files should I install using kext helper to let my display card work, thx

You don't need to do anything, the cards work out of the box with Mountain Lion. Do not install the 270.00.00f06 driver for 10.7.4 on Mountain Lion, it will not work and will break the NVIDIA driver.

Thanks for your reply.

So I just install Mountain Lion with my Ati6870, then plug in GTX570, and just install CUDA is ok?

Yep. If you're running Lion with the driver from NVIDIA's website, you can also just install Mountain Lion with the GTX 570 installed -- everything in Mountain Lion, including the installer, supports the GTX 570 out of the box.

Since there is no boot screen for GTX570, so I still need using Ati 6870 for installing Lion, rite?

As you stated don't install nvidia driver for mountain lion, do what does it mean by "running lion with the driver from nvidia"?

Since there is no boot screen, and if there is no other osx in other hd, there is no way to install mountain lion with GTX570, rite? I still need to use ati flashed 6870 to do the os install, rite?
