This reminds me a bit of the Apple Watch packaging. You see the box and don't think much of it because it's just white plastic but then you get one and feel the heft and realize this isn't cheap anything.

I just thought it was a waste of resources for something that's going in the bin

I think the problem is the shape, and the extra edge around it.
All other Apple design has always been smooth on the edge, unless there is good reason, that extra lip around it is just not looking good.
For the shape, I could understand where is come from, just look at their new building, they are obsessed with UFO, just not sure they need to transfer their obsession to their product design and to their customer.

iPhone 4/4S had a lip around it that housed/was the antenna...

if you have an open band (sports band or classic buckle, etc.) can you lay it flat, catch the magnet then tilt it up or does that not work? :)
I don't think the magnet is strong enough to allow it to be lifted by the watch. Maybe if it gets broken in after some use, but i doubt it would work straight out of the box.

Apple's design fascination with UFOs goes all the way back to the first Airport Base Station:

Good to hear from someone who actually owns this thing. In my Twitter feed I saw a tweet from an industrial designer (who has a site where he's blogged about Apple's manufacturing processes before) knocking this thing for looking cheap as if Apple didn't put much effort into it. This reminds me a bit of the Apple Watch packaging. You see the box and don't think much of it because it's just white plastic but then you get one and feel the heft and realize this isn't cheap anything.

If he called it "cheap looking" then he hasn't seen it in person. Simple, yes. But elegant, and very well made. Just what you expect from Apple and for a $80 accessory.

I never throw my packaging in the bin because if I want to resell it or hand it down to someone I want the original packaging.

I suspect most people hating on it haven't seen it in person.

This reminds me of when the iPhone 4 first leaked and everyone was hating on the antenna lines and said Apple would never do something like that.

Wait, is that a seam I see there? Why Apple would never do something like that. /s

I beg to differ. The first time I saw the picture of Apple Stand on Tumblr I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought it's the perfect dock and tried to find who made it or is it just some sort of conceptual demo but the tagline #dock wasn't helpful. Any dock that got me excited from first sight is extremely well designed.
Your post tells more about your artistic taste than Apple's.
You're right. I for one backed the Amber on Kickstarter. I will receive what looks like an aluminium Jewellery box with a built in battery to charge my watch on the go if need be. All for the price of $49. A much better deal if you ask me. I'd take aluminium over rubber any day

If you prefer that then good for you. But if Apple designs that they will be laughed at by the whole design communities.

each to their own, but the RRP is $79. without a charging cable. does it include the micro USB cable or do you have to supply one of those to make it function?

i also dislike the design of the box. the interior looks good from some angles but not others. it was clearly designed before watch os 2 and has no regard for nightstand mode, and no consideration has been put into adaptation. a lip in the bottom part of the box and a protrusion from the top half to match would have solved this problem - there are no electronics in these parts, why could they not have achieved this?

on a personal level i also don't dig the deliberate seam between top and bottom halves of the case.

It does indeed come with a micro usb cable. It also comes with an mfi certified lightning cable.

OR some people (myself included) that have never used nightstand mode might like this option as it seems to be a much better deal than the crap apple has churned out? It also has a built in battery so this can be used on the go to charge your watch and iPhone. Oh and an app that will tell you when your watch/ iPhone is fully charged and ready to go. Although the app is sort of pointless, it's a nice option to have.

Something clearly superior for the price, regardless if it's to your specific tastes.

Just purchased one today. I am hoping and thinking at some point that they will release these in various colors. Other than that, I will echo some sentiments here, it is solid. The arm that lifts the charger is very secure, and the 2 reasons I was willing to shell out $71 (Company discount) was that I can keep my charger that came with the watch as an extra if I need it. I was also not liking putting my watch on its side to charge every night on my night table. I didn't want it vulnerable to scratching. This offers a nice soft surface to lay it on, and the bracelet lays nicely without dangling. It doesn't take up a large footprint. It's a great charger option.

Had I regularly used the sport strap or leather loop I would had probably went another direction, but this works for what I was searching for.

I would rather buy the extra charger when I actuall need it vs. having another that will likely go unused.

It's worth repeating that you can use the regular charging dongle without any dock at all. It's just magnetic enough to stick to the back of the Apple Watch without any help. Nobody really needs a dock at all. But they sure are nice! :D

I quite like the look of the Apple dock (though I've yet to see one in real life: I'll pop in to the Apple Store tomorrow to take a look, I think) but space is at a premium for me and the footprint looks pretty big. Also, I already have the Native Union dock and I absolutely love the design of that so have no need for another watch dock. I've never bothered with a charging dock for my phone but Natuve Union has won me over and I'm planning to get a matching phone dock.

The footprint is deceiving in pictures. It's just the right size for a watch on a bracelet to lay in bedside mode. I'd compare it to a donut cut in a third.

Just received mine today in the mail. It is true- it is pretty small compared to how big it appears in photos. I am simply going to pretend I only paid $40 for it because I like it a lot, but feel like a fool paying $80 for it.

Other than "unique" (both good and bad) apparent of AW dock discussed previously, $80 price tag is just ridiculous for a AW only dock.
iPhone start at $650 and iPhone dock only cost $49, but AW, can only function as extension of iPhone, start at $350 and AW dock cost almost double of iPhone dock of $80.

Never thought of it that way, but to be fair, the iPhone dock does not come with a lightning cable and it is much simpler than the watch dock. My advice, if you really want it, get it and try your best to ignore the price.

Overpriced or luxury purchase?
I just don't get it how Apple price their docks, more expensive phone with cheaper dock, but cheaper watch with more expensive dock.

I already explained to you: "the iPhone dock does not come with a lightning cable [($29 value)] and it is much simpler than the watch dock [(no stainless steel, no moving hardware, no inductive charging, smaller)]."

Are they coming with 2M or 1M lightning cable?
1M Apple lightning cable only cost $19.
I still use 3 $1 lightning cables I got from Amazon half years ago without any issue. Quality 3rd party lightning cables are cheap.
Now if they come with extra AW inductive charge cable, which has no quality 3rd party available yet, that will be different story.
Personally I prefer use inductive cable, since I could use it as itself if my original inductive cable gone bad. Lightning cable by itself is useless for AW charging. Have to carry dock everywhere I go, if original inductive cable die.

2M.

it has the inductive charger built in to the dock, why would it need to come with a spare charger also?
