Windows 10 should be no problem, but it needs to be on a separate drive - which makes more sense anyway.

I just did a quick search and found this guide: https://crystalidea.com/blog/classic-mac-pro-and-windows

Personally I set up Windows 7 when I bought my Mac Pro in 2010 and just updated it to Windows 10 later.

By the way, you can save an adapter for the sleds and just put an ssd in the second optical drive bay. I did this for years, you can either just let it rest there since it has no moving parts, or fix it with a screw. Together with a PCI SSD card I had 2 SSDs and 4 HDs running in my Mac Pro for some time.

Windows 10 runs great on mine, even though it's still on its original 2010 HD. With a propper GPU a Mac Pro 5,1 can be a nice gaming machine - if your are into that. I can play new games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon: Zero Dawn at high settings and 1440p on mine.

Good luck with the installation!

I have Mojave on my 5,1. I bought an RX 580 new for $130 back in 2020 when they were cheap. Also got the computer for $150 at the beginning of 2020. Upgraded to a 6-core and 32gb ram and used it as a DD for about 15 months (when not using my gaming PC). I have not turned it on since I got my M1 13" MacBook Pro in July 2021 but it was a great machine for me after I sold my Mid 2012 MBP. Def can get some use out of it still today if I wanted too. Have fun with it!

I'm also relatively new to the Mac Pro. I had not spent any real meaningful time on MacOS since Leopard so... a loooong time with just Windows and Linux. The small company I work for moved to Macs in October (planning since July) so I needed to dive head first into MacOS to brush up and, as the SysAdmin, help employees navigate the new OS after coming from Windows. I found a cheap Mac Pro 4,1, $60, and have spent the last 3 months building and rebuilding this thing and it has taught me SO MUCH. It helps that I've been doing systems for 30 years or so but working on this old 4,1, which is now a 5,1 with almost every upgrade known, has been an experience and has it ever made my job easier. I hope you have stayed at it GuitarMas because that is how you should do it. Feet first into the fire.

I haven't posted in a while. But yes. Feet first. My Mac Pro is stored away for the time being. I'm in the middle of moving. I can't get to it. I severely miss it. I've got Big Sur on it.

I'm coming from PC's. Mac's are just so much more fun for me.

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro. It's also stored away. It needs a new battery. I've been thinking about getting one from OWC. They told me for the best performance that when I get the battery that I should calibrate it once a month. Is this really true? It seems like a lot work. I don't mind doing it. I'm mostly curious.

I was nervous too. Technically my 5,1 is a 4,1. But I followed each step carefully and took my time doing it. The big hurdle for me was applying the firmware patch that made my 4,1 a 5,1. After that it was all Apple guiding me, which is fairly foolproof.
Well, seeing as I"m stuck at home for a while due to a recent stroke, I went on eBay and purchased a 5,1 dual CPU unit, and all of the goodies to tinker around with. I must ask... How do you drive 6 displays?! And I"m definitely a macrumors newbie!

Two video cards that have three ports. My 30" Cinema Displays are using the DVI port while the HDTV is using HDMI and the rest have adapters to either HDMI or Display Port.

This card in particular: Nvidia GeForce GT 640, https://www.ebay.com/itm/253853976595

***MODS, THIS IS NOT MY AUCTION, I AM NOT SELLING THESE CARDS, JUST SHOWING WHAT I BOUGHT OVER A YEAR AGO!****

It's metal-compatible so I can run Mojave and above and comes with boot screens (meaning you can see the Mac booting and use Open Firmware). Then you just hook up your displays.

Before this I had a Quad G5. That took three video cards (two ports each) and before that a G4 (also three video cards).

Thanks for the explanation! I just purchased the last one. Appreciate the quick reply. Happy New Years.
Sure, glad to help.

These are flashed cards, so something to keep in mind. It took a little while for my cards to 'settle in' so do not be surprised if you have to futz with it a little bit for a short while after installing. I had a few moments where there was no video output on certain ports. But once they'd been in for awhile I've not had any problems since.

My systems are on 24/7 though (full power, only monitors allowed to turn off) so that probably helped quite a bit.

just out of curiosity, What are the fastest CPUs one can install? x5690s?
No idea. At a certain point everything I wanted/needed was satisfied so I stopped paying attention to faster/better.

And with the MacPros, unlike G5s, you can get your head wrapped around options. Just the fact alone that you can install a different CPU(s) simply by swapping in a new tray makes my mind melt.

This might sound a bit nitpicky but your system is not a 5,1. I say this because there are some minor differences between the two that exist even when the 4,1 is upgraded to the 5,1 firmware. For example you cannot use a 5,1 CPU tray in this system (at least without the fans going full tilt).

For all intents and purposes this system acts as a 5,1 but I think it's still important to know a 4,1 upgraded to a "5,1" is still not a 5,1 due to these minor differences.

Yes, I have two machines en route to me and I'm holding off pulling the trigger on CPUs until I know exactly what has arrived. Hopefully the machines are as listed and there are no surprises but I"m not confident ordering CPU's until I see the trays for myself.
