Just 2 1/2 years for that processor bump.

"By going Silicon, Apple will no longer be at the mercy of Intels only annual updates. They can update as fast as they want now. And even better: by not paying the Intel premium anymore, these improved Macs can be cheaper."

To me that ranks up there with:
  • "There is no notch! It's more screen R.E. to the left & right"
  • "You're holding it wrong" and
  • "Just throw one switch in the compiler to create the Silicon version of apps"
Are we a fun crowd or what?

An M3 iMac in orange is literally the desktop computer I've been waiting for ever since I got the M1 MacBook Air as my go-to laptop back in December 2020. Been using a docking station with the Air to serve as my "desktop" system, but wanted to eventually replace that setup with a true desktop system that had considerably more horsepower and an all-in-one enclosure with display. Time to warm up the credit card.

nobody is talking about the most serious thing - Magic Mouse charging port placement

if it stays the same ... I mean ... I don't even know

Lazy-ass company distracted making TV shows. With every other streaming app on Apple's platforms they should have stayed out of TV Show and movie business and focused on hardware products and cloud services. iMac is being left languished. iMac Pro should have been out a couple of years ago and iMac should have some ports, ffs.

So true. Can't believe they'd pull industrial designers, chip engineers, and software engineers off their respective jobs to go make TV shows instead. Just a bone-headed move by Apple. Those people don't even have the skills to make great TV shows! Let them focus on building computers and writing code!

I would welcome and I am waiting on the M3 upgrade to the 24" form factor. But reading Macrumors for a while, Apple must know that this kind of update would infuriate a vocal subset of customers waiting for a Space Gray / Silver 27" M3 iMac that is seemingly never coming.

That’s the key it’s a small subset.

Computers in general are a small subset of Apple’s business (iPhone are the main business segment). Desktop computers are a small subset of Apple computers (most Apple computers are laptops). 27” iMac were a subset of the Intel iMac market (most were 21.5”). And most of those 27” iMac owners were willing to accept the 24” iMac or a Mac mini/studio with external display as an alternative.

So it actually a vocal subset of a subset of a subset of a subset of Apple customers.

Does the receptionist at the dental office really need a faster iMac?
Not everyone that wants a faster iMac is a receptionist working scheduling software and spreadsheets. Some of us are home users that are just looking for a nicely capable all-in-one desktop system that's faster than our current system. Pre-2020, my main system was a 27" Intel iMac, then I got an M1 Air that I've been using as both my laptop and my desktop (via Thunderbolt dock) ever since. But I've been holding out for a faster Apple Silicon all-in-one and it looks like the M3 variant is finally the system I've been waiting for.

Any "work" I do on the Mac is personal - basic iWork and Adobe apps, plus using apps like Handbrake and Subler for converting/tagging a variety of media files, and the Music app (former iTunes) is why I went to a Mac in the first place, and I still do a lot of work with audio files, as a music lover.

For my lightweight work, the iMac is the best computer I've owned. My M1 is still blazing fast for what I use it for, but I'm looking forward to see what's in store for the new models.

It is known as a VESA mount adapter and it is currently commercially available from third-party suppliers
Oh aye, we discussed the VESA option in an earlier post. Apologies, I didn't really explain my design grumbles, I basically find all the monitor arms on the market unappealing (purely subjective) the cleanest two I've found are these:

which has a very 80s aesthetic

and this:
which has a pretty 90s / early 2000s aestehtic

and even then these things need to accommodate cables and the mounting plate always looks horrendous whichever way you look at it.

My thinking is the Apple could (should?) make an integrated and simple design that matches the design of the iMac

The processor is still not the problem. Base 256GB storage / 8 GB RAM is the problem. They could ship it with the same M1 and bump it up to 512/16 and it would actually be a better upgrade for a computer like this. People aren’t using this to make movies. They’re using it to watch movies and keep a thousand Chrome tabs open and store their pictures. None of that needs a faster processor. All of it can use more storage and RAM.

My guess is they won’t start shipping 512/16 standard until about 2030.
Although I share the same opinion with you, I think this will never happen. Nowadays, a person who knows a little about computers is now aware that 8 GB of RAM is insufficient. Apple also knows this, but they ignore it because they make too much profit from selling RAM. Another reason is that when they add 512 GB SSD/16 GB RAM to the system by default, prices will increase due to inflation. And it will affect the customers.

Well yeah exactly. Hence 2030. By that point they probably will be the last ones buying modules that small and will switch simply because it would be more expensive to buy the smaller ones.

Ok 🍎, noted. Do give me a shout when we get a complete revamp/redesign with worthy updates. My Yellow M1 is still going 💪🏽 for now 😉

So?

What are you saying? In my opinion, that is the worst iMac design they ever released.

Every time I see a new iMac article, I scan for those magic numbers – 27" or 32". So frustrating to see no upgrade options in the near future.

Couldn't agree more, or at the very least just stick to Music and Arcade for content streaming.
