i would like a second mini displayport connector on it:)
I wouldn't. The HDMI connection is useful for hooking it up to a HDTV.

I hope the next Mac Mini is a significant performance improvement over the current gen. A price drop as well would be nice.

have 3 connectors, keep the hdmi and add another mini dp for dual monitor.
I don't think Apple will release a Mac Mini with 3 connectors (unnecessary expense). Two connectors is sufficient to allow dual displays.

Hi All!

Quick question: could the Mini be potentially updated alongside the MBPs or does Apple usually update one line at a time (with regard to Macs, not i-products)?

Best,
Keith

They could potentially do this, although some products that see a speed bump happen across the board in that products entire family only and usually other products see it occur on a different date. I can't recall the last time multiple products had been upgraded/revised at the same time, although I know its been done before.

I doubt the Mac Mini will be updated before the iMac is next updated, but I could be wrong.

Hopefully the Mac Mini will be updated sometime within the next few months or so.

The Mini wasn't really intended as a gaming laptop anyway, so I think it would be fine if they went with i5,i3 and intel GMA
Maybe we'll see an i3 model with i5 Built to Order,
or, they might ramp up the fans and put a dedicated GPU in, like the newer nvidia cards. The 330 would even work, and for $799, the price of hardware has come down low enough that I think it would be feasible.

It'd be rad, though not as rad if they'd have to sacrifice the HDMI port which is unarguably cooler. Though if they finally made and supplied a miniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter in the box, I'd be all for it.

Agreed re: HDMI port. As for the next gen, I doubt it'll be anywhere as near a huge of a bump as the first NVIDIA-based minis were a couple years ago, then again the mini hadn't been updated in over a year and was still using the Intel 945 chipset from 2006.

I doubt those two would have an update on the same day as the MacBook Pro line is typically a monster of a refresh in and of itself so they seldom see a need to do more than that at a time. It sometimes coincides with the White MacBook's refresh, but even that is rare. They did announce and release the Mid 2010 in between the release of the WiFi-only iPad of current and the 3G models. Call it a coincidence though.

October 2009; MacBook, Mac mini, and iMac, all on the same day without any special media event.

Safe bet that it'll happen sometime before May as it was last done in June, unless they plan on sticking this generation out a while until Ivy Bridge comes out with its OpenCL compatible and unarguably-better-than-the-320M graphics IGP. Mini users could stick it out with at least one more helping of Core 2 Duo and GeForce 320M.

The Mac mini would be fine with either staying with a Core 2 Duo and a GeForce 320M or moving up to Sandy Bridge and using its IGP, unless Apple seriously minds the lack of OpenCL support on the IGP, which they very well might.

That is interesting I wonder if we'll see a repeat of that, perhaps a few weeks to a month or so after the MBPs? One would think they'll want to release the MBPs first then wait a bit and release the other products.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. If they stick with C2D, there's not much they probably would do, I think apart from a spec bump (faster clock speed, and perhaps a larger hard drive or even a low capacity SSD).

An update cant come soon enough for me as my poor 2007 mini is on its last legs.

i'd be happy with an i3, an esata port and easily upgradable hard drive.

Whatever they do to the 13" MacBook Pro (barring potential discontinuation) will, more likely than not, serve as an indicator of what will happen to both the white MacBook and the Mac mini lines in the same way that the Mid 2010 13" MacBook Pro affected those models.

You're likely not getting any of that. The current enclosure is here to stay for a while, methinks. eSATA should be adopted, but it likely won't, and the i3 likely won't be used until Intel can give it an IGP that supports OpenCL.

Well it appears that the MBP update is near.

How does the Mac MIni hardware typically match up to the MBP?

Does the MM have roughly the same, better or worse hardware?

The reason I ask is I am thinking of getting a mini, but at this point will wait for the next update just curious as to what is reasonable to expect with it.

Hopefully the MBP 13" and the Mac Mini get a much needed performance boost this year.

However, I think I'll probably wait at least for the 2012 Mini unless the 2011 Mini is something pretty special, as the Apple Care warranties for my current Minis don't run out till 2012.

Having 3 Mac Minis would be pretty nice though. I guess I'm pretty torn between getting a Mac Mini or a Mac Pro as my next desktop Mac and I'll have to wait and see what Apple does to these product lines before deciding what to get. If I get a Mac Pro that would push back my next Mac Mini purchase.

You aren't the only one.

I guess that goes back to what Apple does. They make products.

I wish we could get the guts of a higher end iMac at a slight discount since it would not include the monitor.

I guess I will just have to wait and see what the new ones bring to see if they are worth the price and can handle what I want to do.

That kinda stinks. I wish Apple had a desktop that was more mid-consumer market.

Well, while the current Mac Mini doesn't quite meet my needs, I think that they really are mid-consumer market. I mean, the vast majority of people really only do very light gaming, facebook, internet, music, email, and at the most extreme, photo editing through like PS Elements.

The Mac mini has matched the specs of the 13" MacBook Pro this refresh (Mid 2010), and save for RAM specs, did so last generation too (Late 2009). It's very likely that it'll do so this year as well, but there's no way of knowing for sure.

I'm skeptical that the 13" Pro will get all that huge of an update; Apple is crazy into OpenCL and the IGP that they'd be forced to use with the new Intel CPUs doesn't support it, which means that they're likely sticking with one last round of Core 2 Duo, which means modest speed bumps at best with the GeForce 320M. As for Mac Pro vs. Mac mini, any Mac Pro you buy today would kick the living crap out of any Mac mini introduced in 2012.

You aren't the only one.

No kidding, I'd buy that thing in a heartbeat!

Holy thread bump, Batman!!!

Well, we might as well participate right?

I would change the Mac Mini in the following ways.

1. Replace the HDMI port with a 2nd Thunderbolt port and include a miniDP to HDMI dongle in each Mini (Sorry I'd just rather have a 2nd Thunderbolt port if the need arises)

2. Replace the USB ports with USB 3.0 (Yeah, all four of them)

Nothing ground breaking but I'm sure Apple didn't do this because they wanted to keep the entry price low.

Perhaps make the MacMini a little bit easier to swap out the hard drive with the mentioned USB 3.0 ports ;)
