Do you think they will change the black back to unibody aluminium like they did with the iMac?

I doubt the 2012 MacMini will be a major change.

They might possibly switch HDMI for TB and the USB for USB 3.0, but it will probably just be a processor bump and little else coming between April and August. The base mini is quite a deal if you already have a monitor to hook up to it, and I'd recommend it over an iMac to anyone that has a monitor and doesn't need heightened speed for professional work.

I can't see such a minimal Apple computer getting a fantastic aluminum shell. It's probably always going to be plastic. This latest design is nice.

The mini already has both hdmi and tb

I was referring to the early poster that said he hopes HDMI on the future mini goes to TB, so there are 2 TB ports and no HDMI. I think that's probably not going to happen in 2012, but it could.

I'm holding my purchase of mini because of lack of USB 3.0. I hope they will give it to mini with Ivy Bridge update (I'm not interested in Thunderbolt interface!).

I'm hoping for:

  • Ivy Bridge quad core processor in a non-server model.
  • USB 3.0
  • A second thunderbolt port. I'm happy to sacrifice HDMI.
  • 512MB RAM for the discrete graphics card model.

All of this would make me a very happy bunny:D

That would be great, and maybe keep the HDMI and somehow fit two thunderbolt ports. When we hear of possible future models of any Mac, the improbable often comes true, ever since our switch to Intel as well as greatly reduced prices of components in the last few years.

I like that the Mini has an HDMI port although isn't there a Thunderbolt to HDMI device out? So I guess if they took out the HDMI and put another TB port, I wouldn't be too sad.

I am pretty sure you could use a minidp to hdmi converter

I'll probably buy one in summer 2012, and I also hope for USB 3. Other than that, another boost to processor speed and drive size will be welcome. They offer a 500gb drive and a 750gb upgrade for $150...

Get real, Apple. That's fatuous.

There should be a 1TB in the base model next year. Other than those points, the computer is quite a deal at $599. Buy it at the Delaware Apple Store and pay no sales tax. Perfect.

can't be done. the internal power supply can not power the quad and the discrete graphics card.

either a different body or a brick.

I love everything about my mini, apart from the heat.

The 2.7GHz i7 goes up to 90C while gaming as it is. I can only imagine the temps it'd have if they stuck in a faster cpu!

I'd be quite happy to have a brick outside the mini if they could improve the cpu and gpu while having it run cooler.

The leaked Ivy Bridge mobile processors include a 35W Quad Core :)

Check here

YES and the discrete graphics is 10- 12 watts so just the quad and the graphics are 45 -47 watts. 1 hdd is 3-5 watts so 50 watts.
add a fw800 back up drive 9 watts so 59 watts the fan 1-2 watts so 60 watts. 4 usb jacks up to 20 watts

drive a monitor or drive 2 monitors .

tack on a t-bolt device.

overload plain and simple.

I get that no brick is neater look for many setups.

Not giving a proper power supply BTO for the mini is Just a case of apple hurting loyal buyers that can't work in an iMac for a setup.

My mini is hooked to a 42 inch screen I would like the option of better psu.
My mini is in a HTPC cabinet I could hide a brick bigger then the mini itself.

I'm actually okay with the lack of a power brick in the Mini. The base Mini starts at $599, then you move onto the mid-tier (I prefer that over the term high-end) at $799, and server at $999. The base iMac is $1,199, however if you add an SSD to either the mid-tier or server, it's $1,399.

Those that want more power will get the iMac. I will not because I like having the display and computer separate. As beautiful as the iMac is, that is my preference.

+1

I am with you, glad to be rid of my 2009 with Brick, 2011 and 2010 just are so much better to move around from Office to Tv in family room, also I can see maybe a bump in cpu and hdd, also Apple needs to move all base models to 4GB of ram, the days of 2GB are long over, however if it means Apple charging $100 more for 4GB, then don't do it, there is no reason for us to get screwed over on more money than things cost, I just purchased Crucial 8GB kit fro my 2011 mini for $44.99, why charge double Apple.

It will be interesting to see what they do with their entire Mac line, I see all MBP going to an Air format, and eventually I assume they will remove the Superdrive from the iMac or make it an option. A better GPU in all models would be a much needed improvement but we will see, they are supposed to go back to nVidia, but we will see, maybe a new series of models with an A6 will be cropping up.

Isn't the Superdrive cord kind of short? If they cut the superdrive from the iMac, wouldn't it need to be lengthened?

iMac has a 27 inch screen. I had one it is nice.

MY ht has a 46 inch screen. I don't want extra gear I want 1 computer a mac. I want 1 dvd player/bluray.

no mac suits my needs. I can hide a brick so a mini would work. I do not have a need for a macbook pro at 1700 plus as I don't need the portability. I don't a mac pro I need a computer that will do halfway decent graphics so I can play games on my ht.

Apple does not make anything worthwhile to do this. Yeah I know just get an xbox don't want one. Although rumors have it that apple is going to make a big iMac/ smart tv.

My idea is apple has a good machine a mac mini. it kills the gear below

I own this tv. It is really nice for me.
I have a sony blu ray player.
i have the mac mini server.

I have great sound with world class speakers. this is the key my speakers are really good and gaming would be amazing on my ht.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+...HDTV/1297488.p?id=1218248186087&skuId=1297488

so if I had a choice to play games I would like a computer like the mini with a good graphics card and a good cpu.

in my case an iMac is worthless as i have a 46 inch tv.

so If I want to be loyal to apple and i do. I need a mac pro which I can't fit or a macbook pro with hi end graphics.
I see apple as totally ingoring people in this case. this is my ht before i put the sony in. i have 3 subs two up front and one behind my couch. this room would be great for a nice war game on the new sony. BTW the server does work great with the sony in terms of video.

Nice setup. The question that I will ask next is, what kind of graphics card could the Mac Mini hold with a power brick?

Could you hold the same one that is in the base model iMac for example?

(AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB)

Or could you hold the next model up? (AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB)

How about the high-end 15" MBP? (AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB GDDR5)

Where do you draw the line and how much do you charge factoring in Apple's costs and profits? Heat and power concerns? And memory limits?

What games do you want to play on your Mini and at what settings?

Since my tv has 1080p 1080i and 720p I would do those settings.

Now I have never played any games at all, but I have been seeing the commercial for warcraft iii. It looks like fun. so if I decide to do one game it may be that one.

World of Warcraft or Warcraft 3...?

Warcraft 3 can be maxxed at 1080p with the Intel IGP.

if we can get USB 3.0 & Two TBolt ports I'd be a happy camper. Hopefully they won't change the form factor, I really like it's current design.

just got the base model 2011 for $570 + $40 8GB. Not a bad machine for under $700.

RAM upgrade makes a HUGE difference due to shared memory. Day and Night with my experience.

Should hold me up until new Mac Mini or iMac. Maybe Mac Pro if they re'vamp.

For what's worth, I hope that if the next Mini still have integrated PSU, make it magsafe connector compatible as well.

I have a ATD now and it would be awesome to have that cord minimization.

can't be done. the internal power supply can not power the quad and the discrete graphics card.

Of coarse it can. And most likely will. The internal power supply can power a 35w processor and GPU the same as now. The OEM spec Core i7-3612QM is a 35w quad core processor.

The current Mac Mini is already a unibody all aluminum chassis same as the Imac. the cover is not aluminum it should not be because of the Wi-Fi signal and air inlet.A aluminum cover would be counterproductive. if it was aluminum it would still need a rubber bottom to not scratch your desk same as the iMac has rubber on the bottom of the aluminum base to not scratch your desk

Cannot make the back aluminum how would you get the parts in there?
in my opinion I don't think they can improve the chassis much more than it already is to me it's perfect but to others it's not.

removing the HDMI port would be counterproductive and Apple would never do it. What are Windows switchers going to hook their monitors to? thunderbolt
displays?
You really don't need more than thunderbolt port due to the Ports ability to
be daisychained.
