Yeah, that rumor has been "true" for a few years now;)

OP, if you need it now, buy it now. If you can wait until late October/November, then wait till then. Just remember that the updates aren't on a clock. You may have to wait a little longer before the mbps are updated. Just something to think about before you make your decision.

Apple went from revised G5 iMac to 1st Intel powered Mac as an iMac in just a few months, they use whatever is available to them at the time they pull the trigger on manufacturing them, it's that simple.

Ok, this is silly; don't any of you read up on pending Intel CPU rumors? Core 2 Extreme (Merom XE) X7800 over-clockable starting @2.6GHz if rumors are true, is supposed to ship late July (maybe August).

Next standard speed bumped C2D Meroms are supposed to be released in September topping out at 2.6Ghz, with the X7900 Merom XE starting @2.8Ghz to be releases in the same time frame.

Apple could update with any of this CPU's, do a revision shipping with faster GPU, 800Mhz DDR2 as standard when the prices drop enough, LED backlit LDC 2k res. MBP 17in. all by September. Not likely, but a SSD could be a option, if Samsung is shipping the 64GB SSD's by then.

What does this have to do with ultraportable rumors? Anyhow, just because Intel has a new chip ready, it doesn not mean that Apple is going to adopt it right away.

I doubt that Apple is going to use a Core 2 Extreme Merom in the MBP because it's going to use much more power than the current chips.

I think the Macbooks are going to be upgraded in November to SR (2.0, 2.2), X3100, and LED backlighting. (It would be nicer if they put a 128mb 8400m gs, but that won't happen)

Macbook Pros will see an update to 45nm Penryn chips on the SR platform between December and February.

Hi Calboy, here is a linky

http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/assets/Computers/Notebooks/SZ/SZspec_b.html

Its the SZ series, it can switch between onboard and the external geforce card.

My girlfriend has one (couldnt convince her to move to OSX, this Sony being one of the reasons...).

Admittedly it is quite amazing even though its been out for a while now.

The premium models feature LED screens 13.3 inch and is only 1.69KG in weight...That is one powerful thin laptop i have to say.

Thanks for the link, but those notebooks are 1" thin, just like the macbooks. You said that the macbooks can get thinner. I don't think it can get much thinner because certain parts need that much space. Also, it said that they are from 1-1.5" thick.

Right ok I misinterpreted you as saying they cant get thinner = lighter as well sorry for the mistake!

Ahh yes, there I will agree with you. The macbooks can stand to shed at least a pound, and the mbps maybe two or three ounces. However, the mbp is already pretty light, so I'm not complaining:D

I need to buy a new mbp between now and the 2nd week of September. What are the chances a noticeable upgrade is made to them between now and that time?

Look at the Sonys...They can fit a Geforce card into a 13.3 inch and make it lighter, more powerful and have better battery at the same time.

The current macbooks are way too heavy...

Shame the sonys dont run OSX:p
I've gotta admit, those Sony SZ Premium laptops are nice. Very nice.

Almost nill. The student sale ends about then, and Apple probably won't update them in the middle. Plus they were updated only two months ago. Check the Buyer's Guide.

About? Refer to something in particular, and try to stick to the OP's question/concern. You can create your own thread if you want to discuss something particular.

I was referring to what was mentioned in the topic. Thats how message boards work. What else would I be referring to? People post threads and then others respond to the topic of that thread. If you need any more help about this topic feel free to PM me.

Why is everyone so negative around here?

Josh

A lot of things have been mentioned in this thread, and your post wasn't directed towards any particular post or topic. We're not negative around here, we just want to know what you're trying to discuss. With the vague language you used, I wasn't sure if you were refering to the OP's situation, or simply asking about any mbp/mb news updates. See how some clarification can help?

Sorry, I think I might of misinterpreted what you were saying. I figured that everyone would understand that I was referring to the thread title. I usually try to keep things on topic. I will clarify my posts more next time :)

My best bet is that they will be updated around Late October- Early November.

Three Very good reasons.

1) Release of Leopard
2) Release of Penryn
3) Just before Christmas/Holidays :)

Exactly what i would say but i don't see them adopting Penryn until mid next year. But when it comes to what the physical update will be then I’m not to sure, I don’t see them adding more RAM options or increasing the base amount of RAM, possibly more hard drive options (bigger/faster drives) but what else could they really be looking to update and would the update be a considerable one because I can only see a very minor change for the next revision and then a larger one to coincide with Penryn

Also regarding them getting thinner, i think it’s doubtful.... possibly lighter but i don’t see many options to make them thinner and from what I’ve seen there pretty damn thin anyway!

Well theres already the Mobile Core 2 Extreme chips, who knows what apple can pull off.

I agree with all except 2. Don't count on an instant update. The macbook pro was updated four weeks after Santa Rosa was out. But I guess there will be enough time for an update to occur before Christmas. Anything's possible.

I'm planning to buy a MacBook too, so if your guessing is correct, I'll wait until Novembre...:)

So I can expect this?

- OSX 10.5 Leopard
- LED backlit screen
- Intel Santa Rosa platform
- Intel X3100 (or better)
- 2GB RAM
- maybe some lighter

Or is this way to many for a small 6 month update?

Hmmm...all sound ok except for the video card. That's one of those features that is really reserved for the pro models. Apple has made a point of giving the mbps much better video cards. Bring the models too close together, and mbp sales will plummet.
