www.phonearena.com/news/Why-a-3-year-HTC-Nexus-deal-would-be-huge_id79119

Maybe 3-6 years ago, I probably would have been ecstatic for HTC. In 2016 with other major players bringing out smartphones that are just as sexy, far superior cameras, better battery life, and excellent value (Android One, anyone?), I don't know what to think of it. HTC Nexus devices for the next three years? I feel Google is going to purchase HTC and HTC goes back being an ODM/OEM they were known for before 2007 when they didn't brand their devices yet.

Interesting theory. Definitely a bit of a lifeline to HTC. And I must believe that even if true, they would only be doing one of the two Nexus devices after this year. First year, they get both, and the next two years, they get one or the other.

At least I hope that's the plan.

Sony, Samsung... they need a shot.

I sure as hell hope not. If the Nexus 9 is any indicator of what to expect then whatever they bring will be a heaping pile. By far the worst tablet I've ever owned.

Man I wish Samsung would make the next Nexus, although I know that won't happen as Samsung is way too big for that. But an unlocked, carrier free Note 6 or S7 edge would be incredible. Otherwise I feel like the Nexus devices always have some kind of caveat or tradeoff. I understand price makes a difference as well, but I'd be willing to pay more for something the carriers have no control over.

Yup, samsung is clutched by the balls by the carrier money. Sold their souls a long time ago. One day I am sure they will follow the trend we are seeing with HTC and other phones selling unlocked directly with less bloat. But only when it is more profitable to them vs their current carrier deals. So if less people support their phones in current form, we'll likely see them pushed that way.

I personally have zero interest in a super expense gimmicky curved Samsung Nexus.

Evleaks Says HTC Is Building Two Nexuses - M1 And S1 - And We Think They're Codenamed Marlin And Sailfish

Think we're looking at an HTC Nexus 5 and an HTC Nexus 6?
[doublepost=1461792404][/doublepost]
After seeing the HTC 10 reviews, I am fully ready for Nexus season:

I feel the same way. The HTC 10 is looking strong. A similar device in Nexus form -- with Android N now finally adopting some of the more useful TouchWiz features -- sold unlock would be great.

I wonder why they didn't give Huawei another stab at this year's Nexus 6...

I actually use the Edge screen over 100 times a day. Def not gimmicky and very useful in keeping my screen minimal.

Yeah but gimmicky in that in has no place in stock Android. It is a niche feature that just adds cost and code bloat. Happy you like it though, just would be totally out of place in a Nexus device.

I have to agree. The Edge screen of the S7E is surprisingly useful and functional.

-The Edge software is a very reliable place to launch apps and execute commands from. The convenience is small, but it adds up.

-The screen itself is just gorgeous and that translates to real world gains. It's a visual treat for your eyes; everything on the screen just pops, as if it's actually displaying content on top of your device. And it actually makes regular-screen devices look "too flat" now. It sounds weird, but you have to use the S7E on a daily basis to understand.

-Also, things like slide-out menus and scrolling through alphabetical lists to search for Contacts or music or whatever is so much more seamless and natural now.

-Plus, don't forget that the edge screen allows for a 5.5" size screen in the form factor it's in. Not only is it beautiful, but it really aids one-handed use.

All worthwhile gains thanks to the Edge panel. A Nexus device could easily benefit from these things. Don't all stock Android apps use slideout menus?

I don't think people here want a Nexus device. They want a Samsung device with no carrier bloat. These are two different things.

If they sold a straight Galaxy 7-like phone (not edge) directly via Google with Nexus imprint, count me in. But this is much different than wanting Touchwiz features like edge stuff in stock android.

Maybe Google decides to implement their own edge features and hardware, who knows? But like Nexus imprint, it will be its own proprietary thing.

Actually, not as out of place as you might think. Slide out menu's are used in all of Google's core apps, executed in the same manner as Samsung's Edge display apps. It wouldn't be difficult for Google to add this basic functionality, much like Samsung has done. Who knows, maybe in the future?

Yeah, I have no idea. I wouldn't buy one. But from what I have seen like the edge ticker with the phone off, contact pictures on the homescreen, etc. Those are not like anything I have seen in Android.

Yup. Google could could come up with their own software features to use with the edge technology. They don't have to be the same as TouchWiz.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Why hasn't Sony been approached for a Nexus phone yet ?

Because Sony's mobile division seems to be in a total mess. Their new mid range phone here in the UK, the one with the Snap Dragon 650 SOC and mid range specs, has gone on pre order at Amazon for £499! The Galaxy S7 is £497!

It would be great to see a Sony Nexus, but man they are messed up big time..

As for these new Nexus phones, well Alphabet has today removed the Nexus 9 tablet off the Play Store and no longer available to buy from them, so I read. So they could be switching to HTC phones instead?

I'd welcome this. One of my favorite apps on Android is SwipePad...lets me set up shortcuts they can be accessed at any time by dragging on from an edge. My issues with the S7 edge are with the display itself---just don't like the curved sides.

I would LOVE to see Huawei get another Nexus phone. The 6P is a great phone. I would like to see them move the volume rockers up above the wake button as my only change and I'm in.....

Hmmmm not sure they could use the "Nexus" name but 7P would work.

Yeah, pretty shaky rumor. Might be confused with HTC's next Nexus offering. Might actually be a Huawei offering. Might actually be a refersh of the 6P.

So you don't have a problem with the size of the phone? I just recall seeing quite a few size comparisons of the 6s+ to the S7 edge, two devices with same size display and lots of criticisms directed at the 6s+. Yet the 6P is even bigger than the 6s+....

Well size was one issue I had with both of those BUT money talks even more, I got the Moto X Pure instead for $299 brand new on sale at BB back when.

6P is identical to the 6S+. Maybe less than 1 cm taller. Smaller bezels are always nice, but so are front facing stereo speakers. And a bit of bezel makes it easier to hold a big phone, especially in landscape.
