Go rent each lens (not at the same time). Take photos of the same objects from the same distances at the same settings (you might want to write them down) and compare the photos and make your own decision.

The final images will tell you more than all of the mumbo jumbo in this thread (which is mumbo jumbo that makes for an interesting read). Plus some of the differences in the lenses come down to personal preference and situational needs.

I have the Nikon 80 - 200. I got a deal on it. I think it is great. I use it enough to warrant the purchase. But if that lens was how I made my living, I would definitely upgrade to the VR lens. I just don't use the lens enough to buy the VR.

Most people I know who buy that lens get really excited for it, but don't end up using it very often.
