I'm not getting a refurb! I hate refurbs!

I'm writing from my refurb macbook. Cost under $850. Ordered it from my G5 with the Refurbed Cinema display that I bought 5 years ago. Never regretted it.

Typical I WANT NEW complaint. The warranty is just as good as a retail boxed unit, and you save ooodles. The refurbs are usually blemished, or didn't pass QA on the first go round. Only thing different is the box.

This thread should be a sticky for all the world to see.

AppleFan, enjoy your new macbook.

Yes, triddent 222 I do have a ps3 with 7 games 2 blu-ray movies and its a 60GB I love it but haven't had time to play it since I'm working 8-4 5 days a week. I got it for Christmas and I haven't had a problem with it.

yeah? I live with my parents I'm only 16 lol. I have a job and I'm paying for my macbook in full because I work 320 hours this summer (40 hours a week for 8 weeks). I worked very hard for this and its all gonna pay off. I also have a wireless router and a 50 inch plasma in our living room I play my ps3 on. Why you ask?

awww...I was hoping you would give me your address =[.
Dude, seriously, STOP GIVING THAT MUCH *INSIGNIFICANT* INFORMATION!
I dont care if you're writing your post on your PS3, or if you play on a 50 inch plasma on your living room. NOBODY cares (except you, and your Dad when he notices the burn-in picture on his brand new shiny plasma). It's really cool you got a MacBook im happy for you, and willing to help on ANY question you might have. But consider this a warning, there are people out there, BAD people constantly looking for info. You have a bad habit of giving away too much info.

Now this topic should die. Of course, i stupidly bumped it to the top argh...

yeah your right BUT our plasma has burn in protection! So we don't get burn in's. Do you have a PS3? just wondering but do you have any mac computers?

You're. It's you're. Contractions are your friend;) Anyways, I hope you enjoy your macbook. I know we've all been a little picky with you, but like triddent222 has pointed out to you, you need to learn some self-control.

Enjoy your transition to Mac:)

Sheesh guys, leave the poor guy alone. He's new here, we could stand to be a little bit gentler in correcting.

As for refurbs, I know a lot of you have had excellent luck with refurbs. I went so far as to tell my brother to forget buying new and get a refurb when he was shopping for an iPod a few months ago. He did, and was very upset when his refurb iPod arrived DOA. We were "almost" able to get it going a few times, but couldn't. He was so upset that he wanted to return it and forget about the whole thing, but the Apple rep he spoke to was telling him he could only exchange it for another refurb. Eventually he convinced the rep to return the dead refurb and pay the difference to buy a brand new one.

I know this was probably a rare occurrence but it did leave a bad taste in my mouth for refurb products. We have a store here in Ottawa called XS Cargo which specializes in selling refurb and overstock "junk", and it has also been our track record that virtually everything we bought from this store has turned out to be worthless crap (cordless phones in particular). My theory is that these are products which have esoteric issues that either are very transient (they don't show up when testing and the tester thinks, "no, this works fine") or very consistent (like a cordless phone with consistently bad sound but just "good enough" that the tester thinks it's fine).

I guess over the years I've learned to mistrust refurbished products, and unfortunately our first Apple refurb experience did nothing to change that perception.

Definitely agree. Up until very recently, I had a refurb PowerMac 8600. It ran to the very day I took it in to get recycled about 3 weeks ago. That is over 10 years of faithful service.

The only reason to buy new over refurb is if there is no refurb available, or your discount on the new hardware makes it cheaper than the refurb.

triddent222, can you please send me that background image?

to answer the question: a portable is hardly portable without a protective case. I use a booq viper and it has been an extremely good investment. I would also get: a wireless mouse, which is nice because you can just toss it in your bag when you go, an external drive for making a nightly or weekly backup and for ripping your DVDs to, and a decent set of speakers and a good amp because, although the sound is acceptable for portable use, it's no good for general media-playing.
