Seems clear desktop iMacs are among Apple's lowest priorities at this point. There will be new phones and watches every year. And so many folks want laptops rather than desktops. I almost think it's a market Apple would like to abandon. There was a time Apple was the company for the rest of us with innovative technology that worked. Now it's just kind of another giant corporation with no soul and interested only in maximizing profit. I've been ready to buy a new iMac for a couple of months. I refuse to pay the full price for a computer released in June, 2017. I'm at the point where I'm needing a new computer and for the first time in a decade I'm considering transitioning back to Windows, though I know that's not a panacea either.

That's a little harsh. Yes, I think the days of new iMacs every year are over, although I'm not sure that was ever necessary. But that's a far cry from the conclusion that Apple has given up on desktop computers. There is nothing wrong with Apple's current iMac offerings, unless your main priority is to have the best in the Spec Race. If you think that going back to Windows will be a better overall experience, that's your right, and good luck with that. Personally, my advice to people is to buy a new computer when you need a new computer, and not be dependent on product cycles (unless new models have already been announced). For most people iMacs are purchases for 3-5 years, and very often longer, not annual events. Whatever you buy will be a year old in a year and you can still be drooling over everyone's predictions about what's coming next.

Would be interested to follow how you get on with that... I bought iMac when current gen came out last year and still have old Mac Pro from 2008 and much prefer that system’s modularity. Thought had occurred to me, before Apple presumably lock out that sort of thing e.g. via T2 (total speculation on my part there). Is there a place in this forum somewhere to stick results or is that for tonymacx86?
Yes there is a sub forum for that, I'll post how it went there once I'm done.

But I’m a masochist! I love having money just sitting in my savings account drawing pennies in interest while I painstakingly wait for the iMac preorders! It’s fun to watch all the new Windows hardware being released, and nothing for the Mac! Absolute joy!

Don’t ruin my fun!

If the cpu upgrades to the imac are going to be on par with what the Macbook Pro's received, then wouldn't it make sense for their to just be a silent update in 1-2 weeks like there was with the MBP?

They will essentially be putting the same chips or types of chips that are in the MBP, into the imac with the new 6 core chips.

Yes it makes perfect sense. However, it's overdue.

The MacBook Pros were released on a Thursday.
Apple will want to do something to remind people that iPhone XR preorders start Thursday night. I have a feeling we could see the iMac and/or other products announced tomorrow (Thursday) around noon. Probably the clear XR case that was leaked as well.
That's my hope, anyway!

There's a decent chance of that but I have a feeling that prices are about to go up to accommodate spec increases to include more RAM as standard and the T2 CPU that is already in the MacBook Pro with touchbar.

I've said in another thread that the CPUs weren't deemed exciting enough for a laptop event in July with the Touchbar MacBook Pros (more cores, lower clock speed - how do you spin that?). And what if the design follows the iMac Pro with locked away RAM because of the cooling system?

Of the other items to be upgraded, iPad with FaceID when Craig Federighi has already demoed that (to mixed results on the day) and no sign of new form factors.

Of most interest at an event we're looking at potentially a replacement for the MacBook Air which might have to contend with that third generation keyboard while looking like the non-Touch-Bar MacBook Pro - with USB-C ports instead of the classic ports.

And Phil Schiller might not want to go on record about the third generation keyboard (even if he omits to mention it).

Finally, the Mac Mini may well look like the existing one with my conclusion in the Mac Mini thread that a 'standard' refresh could use the existing case.

Is it really wise to be drawing Mac people to the Apple Store website while people could be hammering it for iPhone Xr pre-orders? Tuesday 23 or 30 would be more logical for press releases, and we'll know by the 23rd if there is to be an event on the 30th.

Apple makes BILLIONS of dollars from Mac sales every quarter, so I doubt that they would like to abandon that market.

And it makes perfect sense that desktop Macs would be among Apple’s lowest priority, given that they make up around only 2% of Apple’s revenue. The reality, whether we like it or not, is that they simply have bigger fish to fry at this point.

I'd be ok with an overall price bump because personally, I was going to have to pay more anyways than standard price and I'd have to get a BTO model anyways as is.

A Price and spec bump overall would be welcome if that means upgrades per part are less as well.

This would make sense assuming they’re only updating the iMac and nothing else. If they update the iPad, mini and macbook along with an iMac, it would make much more sense to hold an event. Especially if the iPad Pro has a new form factor.

The MBP update by itself wasn’t enough to hold an event, so a press release made sense. But they might have 3-4 products to announce before the year is over.

Why do you doubt an October refresh / update?

I sincerely believe that Apple’s lack of updates to the Mac lineup and its lack of candor has fostered an increasingly more extreme love/hate relationship with a certain portion of the users on this forum, which permeates certain threads. Even users who love and care about the iPhone, iPad and the Watch seem to be tiring of the disproportionate focus on these products. With each passing day, I think the discontent and the frustration grows into a persistent pessimism. Platitudes from the executive suite about how a product is “still important” or “really important” while no action is taken that results in something tangible just become empty words and at some point, even the most ardent Apple supporter can become its harshest critic.

Apple is a hardware company, it always has been...yet, Apple behaves in a manner that would indicate a certain lack of concern for a large portion of the hardware it sells. Even if there is no real malice in its decisions, a reasonable person might conclude that Apple’s respect for the users that kept it going through the years and still want its computers has instead become disdainful of those users, but cannot quite decide if it still wants or needs the revenue they generate.

While I try to think as forwardly as possible, my main computing device is a MacBook Pro. I have tried to adapt what I do to the iPad, but it still lacks the necessary tools and solutions to replace a Mac. I have no doubt that it will be able to at some point, but like many others on this forum have commented, I sometime feel like I am conforming to the way the iPad wants or has to work, while my MacBook Pro conforms to me for the most part.

I know this is a long way around to say, but every day Apple postpones an announcement about new Macs, most of which are ripe for refresh at this point, the more Mac users feel as though they are simply expected to accept what Apple gives them, and like it...which is becoming increasingly untenable for them. What Apple offers me is fine for now, but I am increasingly discontented with Apple’s propensity of giving us complex solutions to very easy problems in the name of “Think Different”. Just my 2¢.

I guess you didn't realize that Apple had already announced an event before you made that post.

No, I didn’t, too busy writing. I do hope that Apple updates the iPad Pro, Mac Mini, iMac, introduces a 13”/14” MacBook and shows us a sneak preview of the next Mac Pro, but the proof is in the pudding, so to speak.

The event is in a week and a half. I wonder if they will actually release the new iMac at that event though.

They will, I have no idea why there's so much doubt over this. I have been saying this for a long time although generally I suppose 2018 iMac rumors have been quiet, even MacRumors forgot about it in the October Event Invite article.
I'm guessing it'll be labelled as something "nobody saw Apple announcing" as many quietly rumored refreshes are. In the same way, there will probably be surprise and confusion over the 8-core i7 and i9 models, just as there was when the MacBook started using 7th gen processors, rebranded Core i from Core m. Of course my issue with that is with tech journalists alone, as you would assume they follow rumors, leaks, and announcements as closely as possible.
I've turned this into a negative rant, all I meant to say is that we can expect a big iMac update, and it's surprising there's still doubt over it.

I hope for an external redesign but most for an internal because of the six core i7 or i9
I hope they do, since its a big event that is held in that Opera with a lot more seats, almost WWDC like
I hope for mac mini, imac and 13" Macbook air redesign , ipad pros and airpower release date, and a sneak peek for the 2019 Mac pro and Apple display

It really should be a crazy Mac event because every Mac (except for the MBP) is due for a redesign. It's going to be awesome to see what they've been cooking up in the labs all this time.

What I am saying is there is still the possibility the iMac would get updated just as a silent update.

They've done that before, updated Macs right after the keynote, without actually mentioning those Macs in the keynote. Plus, the 6-core MacBook Pros were silent updates.

seems odd we have not got real rumors on the imac. seems like most things are spoiled before events now. I guess we have some time to get the spoilers on here :)
