The days of Apple giving you more then other manufacturers have long gone

No 5G for another year when already introduced and starting to spread around the UK this year ?
And they price hike the phones. So £1049 I get a basic 11 pro and only £250 for XR trade in ? So I spent £500 renting a XR for the year. Makes you think .....

My brother bought an Oppo, and its so much faster then my XR. Picks up wifi before the train even gets in a tube station, whereas my XR often only picks it up as the train is leaving ...

I have six contracts for my family with apple phones. I am now looking at migrtation to the S10 5G across the board. It looks like it will be cheaper then upgrading to the X11, which require another upgrade next year to get 5G, whereas the Samsung's will last 2 years

After 12 years of using Apple its sad .....

Have you tried O2Recycle or similar for a trade in? They've offered me £200 more for my Xs than Apple did.

Apple products are indexed to the US dollar, everyone and their brother knows this.

The price increased because of the crashing GBP. Apple does this in every single country where the currency is volatile, and the GBP has just joined this exclusive club alongside Russia, Turkey and a few other places (maybe the GBP is not a VIP member yet but its future is entirely unpredictable).

Ask the people with the HTC Thunderbolt how they feel about that in regards to LTE.

Quote from Qualcomm.

“5G PowerSave is a comprehensive solution that – and this is a statement – we’re not going to launch any 5G phones which don’t give you all-day battery life on your smartphones,” Amon said.

They couldn't add 5g because of their spat with qualcomm and with intel coming up short. Apple was forced to settle so they can 5g for 2020.

You have absolutely no proof of this.

No 5g in 2020 will be an outright disaster for apple.

You're right. Apple is doooooooooooommmmmmmmeeeeeeeddddddddddddddd.

Then why does the 5G version of the S10 come with a larger battery than the regular ones? If you want 5G for whatever reason right now, get an Android phone with it. I bet over half the people complaining about no 5G weren't even interested in iPhones in the first place. I'll take 5G when it's actually useful, for now LTE is fine. It took years for LTE to roll out properly and there are still some areas with questionable service, 5G has even less range and is more expensive so I wouldn't expect it to be widespread for at least 2-3 years.

To everyone who is worried about the iPhone 11 not having 5G... read this quote from a tech journalist:

"Let me be very clear: Five years from now your smartphone will be using 4G almost all the time, even when you’ve got a 5G phone in a 5G city.

Reliable 5G networks will be few and far between, and won’t often be available while you’re out and about. The consistent, fast and reliable 5G nirvana everybody talks about will be available in some offices, entertainment venues and other locations, but not generally.

The wireless carriers hope 5G will enable them to compete with or replace ISPs, cable companies, and satellite internet and TV companies. So that’s nice. But it will probably be more than 15 years before 5G replaces 4G for most users most of the time.

So if you take anything away from this column, take this: Rosy scenarios about how awesome the world of 5G will be in a few years are simply not realistic.

For the next decade at least, actual 5G connectivity will be very rare indeed.
" - Mike Elgan, ComputerWorld

This is an opinion piece... but I've seen these sentiments echoed elsewhere.

Basically... 5G is not a direct drop-in replacement for 4G. You don't just swap out the 4G equipment on the same towers. Instead... you'll have to place these little 5G antennas every 200 feet or so.

What's the actual plan here... to put 5G nodes on every street corner? I guess that'll work in the middle of a city... but what about everywhere else?

And it does doesn't penetrate walls. Trees and rain can also affect the signal. So you have to be outdoors with a clear line-of-sight to the node. Seriously?

There is talk that 5G nodes will be beneficial in highly-congested areas like stadiums and airports. I can understand that. However... the stadium plan is already off to a rocky start...

So I dunno. Maybe we should see how well the carriers do with their rollout before we start worrying that our phones don't have 5G.

5G is definitely not widespread.

Its a non issue right now.

Why would you want a 1st gen 5G modem? They're battery sucking right now.
Yeah, man. The HTC Thunderbolt back in the day had horrible battery life with its ridiculous LTE radio.

I don't need that. I'll wait.

Consumers in China are having a lukewarm response to the new iPhones partly due to the lack of 5G, yes, 5G is actually a thing there.

5g won’t be really widespread for another year anyway, especially if you don’t live in or near a major city. I don’t, so I couldn’t care less about 5g.

The price hike is probably due to the exchange rate.

Hardly Apple's fault.

Otherwise the 11 is $50 less than the XR last year. And the Pro models are the same as the XS models last year.

I mean technically it is future proof - 4G isn't suddenly going to disappear and will continue be in use for a long time.
5G isn't suddenly going to be available everywhere within the next 3 years never mind 1.

I agree when buying a phone sure I can see why 5G would be a factor, but at the end of the day Apple had no choice but to stick with 4G anyway due to their Qualcomm dispute, that was only resolved a few months ago at which point it would have been too late.

Price hike is ridiculous though.

Well, I do not see a price hike in the U.S. at least. The iPhone XS was sold for $999 and the 11 Pro is being sold for the same price. And the iPhone 11 is $50 cheaper than the XR. There were price hikes in the previous years, though.

But that is in the U.S. Here in Brazil iPhone price hikes are much more common. In local currency, the base iPhone XS costs more than 6x (608% actually) the price of the base iPhone 3G (the first iPhone model released here). The iPhone 3G was sold for BRL 1,200 back then and the XS is being sold now for BRL 7,300. In the same period (September 2008 to November 2018), inflation in Brazil was about 75-80%.

This huge difference is because of an increase of taxes, a steep devaluation of local currency in relation to the U.S. dollar, and probably increasingly higher margins for Apple (which usually releases new models for higher prices, regardless of taxes and currency exchange rates).

iPhones became so expensive here that now they are considered luxury items. The average annual income of a Brazilian citizen in 2018 would barely be able to buy one 512 GB iPhone XS Max. I hope Apple does not increase the price again when the iPhone 11 becomes available here.

So, U.S. users should not complain too much. The original iPhone was sold for $499 with a two-year contract back in 2007 and now the base iPhone 11 Pro is sold for $999 with no contract. Not bad when compared to Brazil.

As I already mentioned, in the US, from Apple's perspective at least, there's been a price cut due to the Trump trade war tariffs that are being slapped on Chinese products. Apple has chosen not to pass those on to US customers.

This is the great thing about China. What others will most likely will charge a premium price for will be standard on Xiaomi smartphones over 250 Euros. Reminds me of how a $.50 bus ride in Asia is $6 in Vegas (12 times more).

Walt till next year with 5G and the big update then you’ll really see a big increase. And unfortunately people will pay it

It may well have been introduced in the UK this year, but for the vast majority of people in the UK, myself included, it will be years before we get it, unless we happen to be visiting a major city.

So for millions of us, it’s not really on our list of priorities. Christ, even good 4G is still absent in a lot of places around the UK. Perhaps if you live in one of the right areas, in one of the handful of places, 5G will be something high on your wish list. But it’s still very niche for most of the population.

I am not happy that Apple keep on pushing their “flagship” prices either, so I simply do not buy their latest offerings. I just need the smallest and lightest phone that can run iOS 13. I still use iPhone 7 and my next iPhone will be either the rumoured iPhone 8-based “SE 2”, coming next spring, or a 5.4” iPhone 12, coming in the autumn. As many here have mentioned, 5G is still in its early days. What keeps me “tight” to Apple is iOS. I have quite a few friends with different Android flavours and simply do not like the looks of it, but this is personal, of course. Perhaps try running that S10 for a few weeks alongside of your iPhone and see how it really feels for you?
