I'm glad that Apple philosophy is to want you to focus less on phone screen, by not have this feature or by having Apple Watch, and I'm glad there's no useless feature like this on phone that screen can be burnt in which my wife can accidentally turn on. But on the other hand, on Apple Watch however this feature is truly needed.

Apple want you to focus less on the screen :D of course they don't, they just want you to buy an apple watch.

The reason I like an AOD (and I get that everyone is different) is that it means that I don't have to pick my phone up to check if I have messages, I can just glance down and see. As for burn in pretty much every implementation I have seen moves it periodicallly, more chance of burn in from the status bar or nav buttons.

I’ve owned over 100 phones since the old bag phone days. Many of them with OLED displays.

I’ve NEVER had one with burn in. Never.

Lucky you. Had 2 S8's both had burn in with in a few weeks. One was from a youtube. I have a 45 min drive so left youtube open while listening to a podcast. Screen at 30% brightness. Clear burn in where the video box to the info about the video was at. Got it replace. Few weeks later a game i play summoner wars burn in the setting, pause, play button from the game never took brightness over 20% when playing for hours at a time. gave up on getting that one replace. My friend with a LG V20 screen is all burn in like crazy. My Apple watch S0 also had screen burn in after few years of using it.

Just bc you never had screen burn in doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It's actually well documented issue with the screen tech. It was also one of the reasons i was scared to get a iphone X and XS due to oled. While the issue has gotten better over the years with software moving pixels around and so on. It will still happen. Especially as the display gets older.

You are giving two examples of but. In during normal screen use...of course that will/could be an issue.

AOD constantly moves the pixels and is typically at an extremely low brightness level. Almost always displays nothing more than the time as well as mail/message icons with numbers next to them. That’s it.

Yeah i fully understand how AOD works and how burn in shouldn't happen. Still even with the home button on the S8 and newer it's post to move around also. Still users have had burn in of them buttons. I never seen AOD burn in but i would say it's not impossible and probably extremely rare. My comment was more to Mr 100+ phones that never had a issue with OLED screen.

I wouldn't mind AOD but probably would never use it after first few days.

To me, it was one of those things, once I turned it on, I cant believe I ever lived without it.

Finally remembered what it was called...Glance Mode on Nokia Windows phones.

It's not inaccurate. AoD will increase the risk of burn-in because you're keeping pixels on that could be off, thus reducing the lifespan of the display when under normal use. Moving the screen elements will only avoid short term burn-in.

It's not a coincidence why Apple does not and has never offered it in any of their OLED phones: they'd have way more complaints and dissatisfied customers.

Apple doesn’t have AOD for their watches, a device that would have greater utility to be able to, you know, tell the time at a glance. ;) Why on Earth would anyone then expect it on their phones?

There’s quite a difference in saving every ounce of power for a watch with a tiny battery than a phone that has a battery that has been proven (in other similar phones) over the past 5 years to be able to handle an AOD.

There is more risk of damaging your screen by dropping the phone than damage caused by AOD.
