1) The mac mini makes for a good burial ground for macbook parts and processors.

2) Many people buy them as HTPCs

3) They make pretty neat web servers... i.e. macminicolo.com. Good for non-critical or highly redundant setups on the cheap.

4) If I remember right - the last update was silent.

The Mini has a history of silent updates. I bought one of the last models before the Intel switch, and it had a 1.5Ghz CPU (instead of 1.42) and a DL-DVD burner instead of only single layer. I do agree with everybody that it should've had some small incremental update last year, or at least a price cut, but maybe Apple was spending all its money on the iPhone 3G and MacBook redesign.

As another poster said, just because it wasn't announced Tuesday doesn't mean it won't be next week. If Apple thinks it may be a couple of weeks from an announcement, why meet MW's artificial timetable? That whole push notification thing for the iPhone is about 3 months overdue, so I think they're working on a buncha stuff.

How the hell can they start by saying 'Today we're gonna talk about the Mac' then just announce a new iLife, new iWork and update one laptop???

iLife, runs on Macs
iWork, runs on Macs
MacBook Pro, is a Mac
iTunes, runs on Macs

Aside from the bit about buying songs over the air on iPhones, the ENTIRE thing was about Mac-related products.

You know a few things have to be looked at in retrospect. First and foremost, we are not promised anything at these events. There was never any emails sent out to consumers saying "Get Prepared for an updated Line of iMacs and Minis". So you really gotta take it with a grain of salt and say "Maybe next time".

But don't go getting butt hurt because their agenda wasn't what you were expecting. The waiting game is just not worth it, and if anything then if you were waiting to buy an iMac or Mini then now you know. Time to buy!

And finally, everything, on one day or another WILL become obsolete. So if you are waiting to buy the latest and greatest then you are chasing your tail.

I've heard this said elsewhere by others. Problem is, the Mac mini was obsolete two years ago. The late 2006 MacBook has better specs than the current Mac mini (which basically is a portable Mac). At least the old MacBook has N wireless. It's very hard for anyone to pay good money for a computer that old, unless it's used.

My guess is that Apple wants the new iMacs and Minis to come out with Snow Leopard.
History would indicate otherwise. New Macs have been released shortly before a new version of the OS on several occasions.

I'm disappointed. been waiting and waiting for a new mini.

Now my Mini money has gone to HP; Sorry Apple, just couldn't wait any longer :(

Hot News Headline in NZ - " Meet the new iMac"

Take a look at http://www.apple.com/nz/ right now. One of the scrolling headlines is "Meet the new iMac".

Could there be a wee surprise heading our way sooner rather than later?

i can see that too..
Interesting...

Huge disappointment for me this morning, i just wanted an updated imac with updated GPU...

I've been waiting to buy my first mac (iMac), now not sure whether to hang on a bit longer or just go and get one now.

I was really hoping for a Mac mini as a second mac. I guess the waiting game continues.

Now I have to keep using my duel 450 powermac for a while I use a PC in the house when I need speed. I've been holding out for a quad core iMac so I'll just have to wait longer. Hopefully it comes before I have to donate my Mac to a museum. I wonder what the glitch was. Hard to believe all the rumor sites could be so detailed yet so wrong.

The rumour sites weren't wrong per se, they weren't pulling facts out of their ass and they were pretty well founded rumours as rumours go (provided you always keep sight of the fact rumours can always be incorrect).

Apple actually threw a pretty big doosie yesterday, everything indicated that all the rumour sites (and individuals btw) predicted was almost considered a sure bet looking at the factors and stats.

Time will tell why, but not to add salt to the wound but the quad core iMac thing was a fairly late-in-the-day baseless rumour, if we see an iMac before Nehalem it will be very unlikely to be a quadcore. I've never seen a speedbump that changed the entire architecture of a system.

If we get iMac updates and no Mac Mini then I think we all need to abandon the Mac Mini vessel.

mac mini

still waiting for the mini to get updated. if it was on a normal release cycle i wouldn't care so much but since it's been over a year since the last release i will keep holding out. :(

I doubt the mac mini release will coincide with the iMac. The iMac is a flagship product and the mini is an unrelated product architectually. It's also more of a subculture product... more or less. The mini will get an update when Apple has nearly run out of parts for the current model. While it's frustrating to see a beloved product be neglected for over a year it allows Apple to buy larger shipments of components at lower costs and helps Apple bring inventory down both of which help the margins, which helps the company value, which pleases share holders who invest in the company so they can keep building the products we all enjoy.

My guess is that Apple wants the new iMacs and Minis to come out with Snow Leopard.

Yes, not to mention that Snow Leopard will supposedly be optimized for Intel with minimal memory (512 Megs).

So, it wouldn't suprise me if Apple decided to wait so that the nVidia chips go down in price, and they can release a Mini with only a 120 Gig hard drive and 1 Gig RAM with Snow Leopard so they can achieve the $499 price point.

Not to mention include iLife '09.

This is my first post, but I felt like needed to contribute to this conversation.

Put me in the camp of eagerly awaiting the imac release yesterday and one who came away deeply disappointed.

I was looking for a computer that would allow me to do some basic video editing, photo editing, and run Adobe CS4. I really like the mac platform and actually already have a Macbook, but have never had a mac desktop.

I am looking to eventually get an AVCHD camera so I wanted a quad core processor so that the ingest times into FCE would be manageable, but a MacPro is just overkill for me. So I was really excited about the prospect of a quad core imac.

However, yesterday made me realize I don't want to get locked into apple. It is ludicrous to have put off a major purchase like this because apple isn't ready to release their product. In the PC world you can go and get the latest technology from any number of vendors as soon as it released.

So....what I ended up doing last night was bought all the parts required for me to put together a completely decked out quad core workstation (1TB HDD, 4GB RAM, ATI 4670, blu-ray - yes the bag of hurt, and plenty of room to grow). All of this for about half the cost of what a locked down imac would cost me.

I fully realize apple will most likely have an event either later this month or sometime during the spring announcing a quad-core imac, and yes their software is beautiful, imovie 09 alone made me think twice about the choice I made last night. But, I am more than willing to live with Windows XP for now and 7 when it comes out along with Sony Vegas (with its native no ingest time required AVCHD support) and Adobe software because I won't be at the mercy of Apple.

Yesterday was really just an arrogant slap in the face to the user community. The only hardware that is released is a $2800 laptop with a non removable battery (but wait, here's a video why its GOOD). Yes the software looked cool, but geeze did they really give a 45 minute demo of iphoto?

Maybe someday Apple will get their act together and stop trying to create a hype machine around their products and release a reasonably priced product that either has some regular update cycle, or is at least more frequently upated. Until then I'm sticking with PCs.

Welcome.

Please post in the video section your using Sony Vegas/Windows workstation. I've only tried an old version of Adobe Premier for Windows and never got it working right. Plus people ask me with a PC what is good video editing software. I have to tell them I don't know since I'm more a Mac user for that sort of thing.

I've done a lot of research on this, because I really wanted to make the right choice. From what I understand if you're going PC, Vegas Studio/Pro is the way to go and obviously on the mac it's Final Cut Express/Pro.

Adobe Premiere's AVCHD support isn't as far along and it's really expensive. The pro version of Vegas is about $500 (I'm only getting studio for now though).

Is that why it's been the second best selling Mac desktop at Amazon.com over the last 5 months?
When the desktop choices are iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro... Yes. The Apple Desktop ranking is iMac, Mac Mini, iMac, iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini. The Amazon statistics are a bit light on details as we are not given quantity sold.

I like the Mac Mini, I own a Mac Mini... and a 15" PowerBook and a MacBook. I will probably buy another Mac Mini in the future - for my livingroom, to replace my PowerBook with the busted screen. It's size and quiet operation makes it appealing for a great number of uses. Find a computer better suited for an HTPC for the price. How many people that vocally pine for an upgrade state that they will be hooking it up to their TV? I would still say that the Mac Mini has more support from the subculture (HTPC, Servers, Automotive Computers) than it has from Apple. They don't upgrade it because they don't need to. There's no competition - the sony vaio vgx-tp25e is $1900 and the via mini-itx is far less powerful (but still very cool.)

Edit: It appears that you may be able to get the vaio for $1280 refurbished at sonystyle.com, otherwise ~$1600... but still.

Went into the source code through some of their javascript files and found this URL:

It's funny how no1 noticed that they ended the show with the song "The Best Is Yet To Come" by Tony Bennett.
