Question, I have a balance from my old iPhone to pay off on AT&T before it lets me order and then trade in for the 13 Pro. Is paying it off instant? Or does it require days of processing before being able to order with the trade in promotion? Thanks

If by 'instant' you mean will it show up in your account in some fashion, probably not. But you can certainly trade in your old iPhone now and then whatever the adjustments are to pay off that balance and apply the difference to your new phone, etc., will all get worked out and probably won't be fully visible to you until you get your first monthly bill with the new phone.

if you have a local AT&T store then I am sure they can take care of all of this for you, assuming that they have the new phone in stock that you want to get.

One of the reasons I went for in store pickup was so that I could trade in my phone at the same time and not have to worry about mailing it in or waiting, but I was a bit surprised to see this note in my email confirmation:

Is that something new? I had thought that in previous years you could trade in at the store when you picked up your new phone.
I ran into the same issue. I'll be mailing my trade in back to Apple.

Well, yeah thing is it doesn’t let me complete the purchase with trade in because my pay off from my “next” phone isn’t complete. So I would need to pay it off on the site. Then go back to Apple store app to proceed with the transaction. I wanted to bypass the mess of going to my carrier, inventory checking is amistad impossible. I’ve always had great luck
With the Apple Store app and in store pickup.

I'm not 100% sure how this will be handled at the Apple store but if they can't take the trade-in from you on the spot, then surely they will still handle the complete transaction and then the trade-in will be a separate shipment where they (or AT&T) send you the mailing information so you can return the phone. I don't know that it all has to be done simultaneously.

Apple trade-ins, in my own limited experience, can happen after you receive the new device. There is a time period during which they need to receive the trade-in otherwise the credit won't be given. I would assume that AT&T would be the same or very similar and that Apple would be able to handle it and if they can't take the trade-in then they'll still be able to give you the new phone and explain how any remaining steps need to be done.

If Apple Store is convenient for you and you are anxious to get the new phone, then if it was me I'd just go there and work with them. You could also do a chat with Apple in advance, to see if you can confirm how they would handle. In fact that might be the best next step.

I was able to trade my 12 Pro in at the Apple store today. Total time for me to get my 13 Pro Max and trade in my 12 Pro was about 10 minutes.

I originally was gonna mail my 12 PM in but waiting in line this afternoon, I asked if I could turn it in and they said yes. So I turned it in right away instead of mailing it.

Unfortunately the only options are to pay ATT and then order from Apple if still want or do both at ATT store. Had same issue in past with ATT installment and they lock the devices.

Just to come full circle on this post, my trade in is (finally) complete. As I mentioned a few posts up, I tried to trade in at the store, but they said that I was set up for a mail-in trade and they couldn’t override that. My trade in box arrived last week wednesday and I boxed up my phone and shipped it out the same day. The tracking info showed that the phone was delivered on Friday, but the Apple trade in status didn’t update until Monday. On Monday Apple showed that the phone arrived and was waiting for inspection. I got an email at about 2:30AM last night saying that the phone passed inspection and that I was getting the expected $790 in credit for my 12 Pro Max.

I definitely would have preferred to trade in store, but in the end it worked out.
