Sometimes I plug my phone in and place it upside down in the cup holder of my wife’s car and bring up waze.

The iPhone X doesn’t appear to allow apps to be displayed upside down. I realize the notch might be the reason, although in Waze’s case, the app hasn’t been updated for the iPhone X yet.

Is this true? Are there any examples of apps working while upside down? I haven’t found any. Maybe we will get this back in a future iOS update?

Same exact problem here! I put my iPhone in my car’s cup holder with the power cord on top whenever I am driving. Now, that no longer works, and it is a major issue for me.

Did apps rotate upside down on previous iPhones? Honestly can’t recall.

Many didn't, developers have the possibility to disable a single orientation if they want to. I usually disable upside down on the iPhone, while I enable it on the iPad since the home button is less important there.

The only device to ever allow upside down rotation are the iPads. No iPhone has ever done upside down rotation.

That’s not correct. iPhone 6 running iOS 10 allowed upside down rotation in Waze and some other apps (Tap Sports Baseball is another). When I upgraded to iOS 11.2 in iPhone X, upside down rotation disappeared in both of those apps.

I put my phone into cup holder too. It looks like many people do it and why not? I only need navigation occasionally so I don't want to keep a dedicated phone holder. The notch brings only one advantage - minor reduction in the phone hight. But the drawbacks are too many. It looks like Apple made a bad decision here.

Just tested Google Maps/Apple Maps/Waze on my 6s.

All three flipped & worked with the phone upside side down when in full Turn by Turn Navigation mode.

Waze was actually the only one that flipped & worked with the phone upside side down when not in Turn by Turn mode.

MY iphone 5 using ios 10.? allowed upside down use of all apps and the home screen. I wish i had it for the iphone 8.

If your upright phone doesn't sit well with the cord folded under it, you might try a paper cup with the front cut down as a holder.

I use my iPhone 8 to navigate with Google Maps all the time. I usually put it in the cup holder upside down. It puts much less strain on the USB cable, and the phone is more stable in the cup holder.

Doesn't the app developer have to enable it?
Apps that were enabled for upside down, but not updated for the X, may not rotate upside down until updated?

I would say exeryone who wants this changed should become a free beta developer and leave some feedback about it. It’s absolutely ridiculous that my new over 1000 dollar phone is lacking the support to do the same thing every other iPhone ever has done. It was a big selling point of my car that I could have a nice clean phone mount that I could easily charge!

I do the same cup holder thing with Apple Maps navigation screen. Screen would rotate to upside down on my iPhone 7 but will not on iPhone XR. It still rotates to landscape. Just not upside down. C’mon Apple!

You shouldn't be using your phone in a cup holder.

Cup holders are for cups & generally located further away from your windscreen than a phone cradle is.

Your habits need to change - invest in a proper phone cradle that places the screen in your field of vision whilst driving or pick up a CarPlay headunit.

For me I don’t want my screen with A big holder in it it’s very distracting having it taking up a bunch of windshield real estate when I mostly listen too the directions my car has the ability too answer calls so I don’t need to touch it at all I’ve been doing it this way for years before. I don’t think apple should make the call on how I’m using the phone so late in the game let’s be honest it strikes me as just being lazy that phone is crazy expensive so it’s not like they can’t do it.

I agree. & I should've been clearer - by "in your field of vision" I mean in a position where you can quickly glance at the screen at a stop light etc. Say just to the left/right of your steering wheel - at shoulder height, as oppose to the typically lower height of a cup holder.

I look at phones mounted smack-back in the middle of windscreens (or any location of a windscreen for that matter) & question the safety of it...blocking any part of it would be very distracting to me as even when in the lower most corner, you could not see an obstacle or animal suddenly pop out from nowhere.

I didn't realize this. So that makes this seem more arbitrary then. I'm sure the notch has something to do with it. Unless there is something special developers have to do, because the non-X version of Waze doesn't rotate. I did some searching and found a Stack Overflow question that seems to indicate it is not allowed. I guess we will have to wait and see.
Apps have to manually state that they support portrait upside down orientation, but I don't think that the X model iPhone's will ever use that orientation. The reason being that you would lose a ton of screen space - the Notch area becomes useless, 30 pixels above the notch becomes useless because of the home bar, and then you lose 30 more vertical pixels up top because of the status bar needing to be displayed.

It does seem like they could add it as an accessibility mode though. And just black out the top and bottom of the display and make it act like a rectangular display iPhone.

Waze does fully rotate on Plus-sized iPhones.

I was able to rotate upside down with my iPhone 6s, using it exactly as described in this post... Waze, upside down in a cup holder. This allowed me to charge and use Waze at the same time without stressing my cable.

Unfortunately it no longer works with the iPhone X.

My iphone 6S rotated upside down. It was a great feature because I could keep it plugged in while in my car, but running the maps app. It appears apple removed this feature...

My Subaru Outback has a holder designed for a phone... not a cup holder. It's easily viewable while driving at a glance and then I could plug my phone in, turn it upside down and Apple or Google maps would rotate to be viewable. I wish they'd kept this feature
