I just wish there was a nice multi-port USB-C charger to charge multiple devices at the same time. For several years I’ve been using a multi port USB-A charger at home and when travelling (for charging iPhone, Watch, iPad, etc). I actually haven’t been able to find a multi port USB-C charger at all.
You know something, I saw some random adapter the other day that plugged into the 87w Apple usb-c and it outputs 1x usb-c and 2x usb-a. Not ideal for some of us but I can see the usefulness. I’ll see if I can find it if you’re interested.

Edit: found it.

Same company sells this which is 87w and has 2x usb-c and 1x usb-a

People have bee criticizing Apple for the past two years for not including USB-C to lightning cables with the iPhone so they can use it with their newer Macs. Now people are complaining that the iPad cable won’t work with their older Macs. “I spend thousands on Macs and professional tablets but refuse to buy a $12 cable on Amazon!”

TL;DR: people like complaining and not much else.

im in the same dilemma. Everything is in the cloud except apple forces you to connect to your iTunes library to transfer music. No way around it. You can only use WiFi after it’s been initially connected and chosen as a preference.
My way around this is the use Spotify. I even put up music I own then pull it down to my device wirelessly with Spotify. IMO iTunes is a weed I don’t want in my yard. I haven’t used it in years and don’t plan to ever use it again.

For the past year or so I've traveled with both an iPhone and a Pixel 2 XL (usb c) -- long story :)

Anyway, I found some lightning to usb-c adapters (and little silicon "leashes" to attach them to my cables) and have been happily charging/syncing both devices with a single cable (well, one device at time :) )

Maybe a strange question, but can I charge my Samsung S7 Edge with the new iPad Pro? And what about sending photos from the S7 Edge to the iPad Pro straight over USB C? This would be very handy! :)

Noticed that the iPad Pro doesn't have an 3.5mm audio jack, but Apple is selling a converter for less than 10 EUR.

Probably no one will know the answer until you try it :) It will either work or you'll get some message "Not supported" or something. Maybe when the review embargo is lifted we'll find some YouTube reviewer has given it a go. Keep an eye out for those in the next day or so.

From the hardware review on TheVerge :

"You can plug a phone or Nintendo Switch into it and get up to 7.5 watts of power to charge them. (That’s not really enough for a Switch, by the way.)"

So, maybe yeah

Don’t get me wrong, I fully understand and agree with you.
I have been using Apple products for years and have most items.
However, in those ‘golden years’ it was still expensive BUT you didn’t have to think of anything other than the devices, everything came and went together....
These days however, Apple are hell-bent on how it looks with even more expensive devices but then have the audacity to either remove cables or expect you to pay extra to use said expensive devices.

I am getting ever so close to thinking...... enough is enough Apple!
Apple has given up on innovation a long time ago (post SJ). TC solely focused on driving gross margins and ASP. Every little connector/ cable underpowered charger etc it excludes from an iPad/iphone/mac sale drives up its margins. It is starting to come back to bit them now.

I find this thread funny.

First of all who actually connects their iPad to their computer? Everything is in the cloud.

I have a 2017 iMac and Macbook Pro both with USB-C/TB3 and I can't see any situation where I need to connect them.

The only thing I need is a USB-C to lightning cable so I can charge my phones (Android and iPhone), iPad and laptop from the same charger. So for me this is super useful .The thing left out is the iPhone.

I do. I prefer to backup my iOS devices to my mid 2014 retina MacBook Pro. I use WiFi Sync but plug in for software updates and when I restore a new device from a encrypted backup. It’s so much faster than using WiFi

Will USB C to A still be able to back up to iTunes and sync? Are there limitations in terms of what the cable can do? Sorry if that’s stupid

Not a stupid question. Yes, you can backup and sync without limitations. Well, it’s a bit slower than if you had USB-C to C.

A-to-C vs C-to-C doesn’t matter for speed. What matters is if the cable has all the wires for USB 3 or not.

You can wind up with a C-to-C cable that only supports USB 2, and there’s no way that will be faster than a USB 3 A-to-C cable.

Why USB 2 C cables are even a thing, I will never know.

I just realised that there is no USB C to USB A cable supplied with new iPad Pro. This means if you want to use iTunes (or any 3rd party Apple device management program like iMazing), you will need either a computer with USB C port or get your own USB C to USB A cable.

Now there's the question of whether the supplied USB C to USB C charging cable can also be used as a data cable...

the included USB-C to USB-C cable supports charging and USB 2.0 data speeds. for USB 3.1 speeds and support of 4K & 5K monitors you need to buy another USB-C to USB-C cable that supports that, they are thicker and more expensive.

Thanks for the confirm!

I’m annoyed Apple don’t ship a usb-c to iBook G4 adapter in the box so I can use my existing power lead  /s

MacBooks have shipped with USB-C for coming up to 3 years and tiny adapters are extremely cheap for machines with legacy ports. They need to move on at some point and now seems a good one.

Not far off 4 years if you count Macbook too.

Fortunately I had a couple for my Switch already.

There was an awkward moment when I first tried to hook it up to my Mac Mini.

“Huh?”, followed by “Oh yeah, of course, ha.”

I ordered a USB C to USB A from Monoprice so I have a longer charging cord.
My laptop is a 2018 so I also bought a USB C to USB C cable

Such is the price we pay for progress unfortunately. Whenever it happens (and it’s happened to me more times than I can remember, with more products, connectors and so on, in nearly 40 years) there’s going to be a point when technology changes and we have to replace things.

Fortunately, this is a less expensive one to bear at the moment. You don’t have to buy Apple cables to do it. There are plenty of good quality third party manufacturers making cables, for a lot less than Apple charge.

My iMac doesn’t have USB-C ports, it’s from 2015. I’m fortunate I suppose that I’ve already bought cables that fit the bill for other devices. But it’s always going to happen. Heck this is the third connection change Apple has done with iOS devices alone.

I know exactly how you feel..... I have zero issues with progress but have a massive problem with rich company’s who don’t give a flying fig to their long established user base who prop up their expensive ‘Shareholders pockets’!!
