The larger app selection is always more desirable no matter how one tries to package it. It's something Microsoft needs to address to make WP8 more desirable.

a flash light app is not the best example here as I couldn't give a ......... how it looks as long as it works. I agree that the more choice the better but that'll all change - ios didn't come with 600k apps when it first launched either - wp8 will get there

But until then, it's a deal breaker. It took iOS, was it 4 years? I think it was 4 years. So if I were to choose something now, it definitely wouldn't be a windows mobile. Maybe in a couple of year's time when it really picks up then it's going to really pull some teeth out of the iPhone.

There are 400,000 apps that have NEVER been downloaded from the app store. NEVER! ZERO.

Where you got that from?

More desirable as used in marketing, but with little practical use for the user.

Any hope that HTC will pull something amazing out of its pocket? Or that intel powered smartphone?!

Here's to hoping :( Nothing I've seen has made me go wild yet...

You guys don't realistically expect a platform with less than 5% marketshare to have the same app selection as the iPhone do you? I think Microsoft has done well getting the apps they have. As marketshare increases more developers will try to bring their apps to WP.

In addition to the marketshare, WP7.5 had limitations regarding how deep devs could tie their apps to the OS. These limitations are lifted with WP8.

Imo developpers won't ignore WP8 since any app made for WP8 will operate on Windows 8 RT tabs and even windows 8 because of the joint framework...

How does the Lumia 920 IPS screen compared to iPhone and Galaxy in terms of quality (not size). Is it "retina" ?

Yes it is. It actually has a denser pixel density than the iPhone but that's just part of the story. The 920's screen uses other technologies that really makes it unique in the business: ClearBlack, PureMotion and Super SensitiveTouch. For a great explanation, please read this: http://www.phonearena.com/news/The-Nokia-Lumia-920-PureMotion-HD-screen-explained-is-this-the-best-phone-for-Snooki_id34169

Does anyone have any experience switching from iOS to Windows 7/8? I'm not ready to sell my Macbook Pro or iPad yet but I am really considering giving Windows 8 (Lumia 920 likely) a try. I'm a tech-geek and 5 years of iOS is getting a little stale for me, even though I have no complaints about it.

If I switch to a phone other than an iPhone, will I lose my unlimited data? If so and it turns out I don't like the other phone and return it for an iPhone 5, anyone know if I can get the unlimited data back?

I did switch. If I were you I would wait and see how the WP8 store evolves in the few months following the release of WP8 handsets. I wouldn't go back to iOS, even if the appstore is populated by many games and apps that are just absent from the WP store. The OS is just a notch above the rest IMO, in terms of ease of use, practical aesthetics and footprint. WP8 will just sweeten the deal and allow devs to make apps unrestricted (which was not the case with the WP7 and IMO one of the main reasons why it has not attracted as many devs as expected).

As far as your data's concerned, as long as you upgrade your phone the same way you did when upgraded to newer iPhones, I don't see why it would change anything. It's about the contract, not the handset.

Only thing I am a bit sad about I can't sync music with iTunes... thought I hope software is good, because I hate iTunes syncing with iPhone, when apps get deleted and all that rubbish.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking about picking up a cheap Windows 7 phone and trying it out. Did you do the full switch from OSX/iOS to Windows?

I've been giving a lot of thought to the app store debate. It's obvious that iOS has the largest, most polished app store out there. I don't think that is even up for debate. But as many have said there are thousands of apps that are useless, thousands that are "light" versions (so basically a half functional duplicate of a real app), thousands of lesser known apps that clone well known apps, etc......

So I looked at my iPhone, I have 5 pages. And I'm asking myself, how many of these do I really use? How many are just a portal to a mobile website? How many are also available on the other platforms?

What it really comes down to for me- I want a nice browser, a facebook app, a camera app that is nice (whether it's stock or not doesn't matter), and a couple of games. Most of the stuff on my iPhone I don't use much anymore.

I'm beginning to realize that while I love iOS, most of the best apps have iPad versions. iPads are contract free/no monthly payments. I think the iPad is a great device for "creating" as well as consuming. And I use it like crazy for school (I honestly think it makes me a better student). So I don't necessarily need an iPhone anymore these days as long as my iPad is still kicking.

I can't wait to check out the Lumina, if I like it, I'll probably switch and see how it goes. If I hate it, I still have my 4S.

No I always had Windows machines as I like to build them myself. Picking up a cheap WP7 is a great idea although just be aware WP8 will lift most of the restrictions the last generation OS had hardware and software wise. For example, devs didn't have access to lockscreen notifications in WP7 and a lot of other simple to deep access to the core of the OS. That's why I and many others are very excited about WP8. May I suggest you pick up a Nokia? At least the 710. First gen WP really show their age now.

Edit: the MBP is no doubt a great machine. I'm putting a lot of hope into the Surface Pro.

Yeah this would be the best of both worlds at the moment. However I'm looking forward to the Microsoft's ecosystem growth. A seamless interaction between all devices is clearly their goal. I really want to see devs going on board and delivering high performance games and music apps (there's barely a decent metronome app in the Windows phone store which is rather pathetic).

Lumia 920 has a far better screen (brighter in daylight, more sensitive, ClearBlack, higher refresh rate, higher ppi), 2 far better cameras and probably better battery life.

Plus, iPhone 5 doesn't have anything Lumia doesn't.

So very interested in the Lumnia 920. I honestly hope more people give WP8 a change than did 7. Id also like to see Nokia back in the game, eventually giving Apple a run for their money. Competition is a great thing.
