Things will change, a little bit, over the next several betas.
Agreed, though I think it will take the next few years. iOS 7 was terrible from a usability standpoints but iOS 11-13 is nothing like iOS 7-9. Each year Apple will iterate a bit more. I would have thought they learned their lesson though and would have started from a more neutral standpoint.

good news! you're not forced to update! but good you stopped by the big sur forum to let us know what u think....

This came off a bit aggressive. You're right that the OP can stay on Catalina for the next year or two, but Apple aggressively "encourages" you to update since security and Safari updates only go back two years I believe. If the user doesn't like this design and Apple doesn't really alter it, they'll be forced to move to it in the not-to-distant future.

apple can't be expected to have a design for everyone, so you adapt... or you don't. there's much i love about mac os... and some things i don't like at all. but if my apps work, and the mac is stable, and i can get my work (& play done)... isn't that the point?

what lesson should apple learn? and who defines what a 'neutral standpoint' would be?

Yeah, after spending some time using the new UI I'm honestly not a big fan. The titlebars and toolbars are bigger now, and that's not a good thing as always I run my MBP at native res so I'd rather have the space. On the iMac it wouldn't matter as much though.

The flat toolbars kind of remind me of one of the nicer-looking Linux distributions, Ubuntu Budgie. But the iOS icons, man those are ugly. I didn't realize how bad they were until I restarted back into Catalina and saw my icons immediately level up. It reminds me of those old iOS 7 icon packs for Mavericks. I thought those looked neat then. But Yosemite came along with the perfect blend of MacOS and iOS design aesthetic for the icons.

everyone will get used to the new look, then one day, we'll look back, and 'see' how much better it is now (that's how it works for most of us over time; look thru the previous OS forums to see this in action).

there will always be ppl who clamor for 'the good old days'. zzzzzzz. meanwhile, if you haven't downloaded the beta, why not wait until you do (IF you do), so you can make up your own mind about things? just a thought.

Trust me, every OSX update I think the same thing "everyone wants to cling to good old days", although I've never been one of them. I've welcomed change.

This however is just a joke. I maintain dozens of software apps from my mac because its a fine piece of machinery. I don't want it to look like a stupid iPad....... if I wanted to run all my businesses from my ipad with 40px of space between every piece of text I would get a large ipad and a keyboard.

Sigh :(

Almost everything about this is neutered, weaker, lighter, less contrast, and lame.

RIP

Good news, medical treatments for hyperbole are now available...

Good grief, one 15 minute demo and folk are all chicken littling over this.

(Looks into crystal ball, sees future threads on this subforum entitled "Is Big Sur Apple's Vista?" and "Big Sur is worst Apple OS ever!!!!!!")

I hear you. There's 2 main things that ruins everything for me. The worst of the worst is the iOS icons, second the control center. It reminds me so much of this with the harsh outlines:

people will adapt; what else is there? but for me, the bigger concerns are... how does my mac run? how do my programs run? because that under-the-hood stuff seems most important. and i would never revert to an older OS for the icons... (but that's just me)

There are some very core design principles founded in usability. The lack of contrast and light text onto of a light-translucent background is objectively bad design. Everything else from the window chrome to the icons is just aesthetic preference that we'll adapt too.

If the final release of macOS Big Sur has usability issues I'm sure they'll increment just as they did on iOS.

Honestly, they look like the kind of icons you'd see on a mockup display on a brandless Mac in some random Amazon marketing image. :D

If you’re thinking about the menu bar that seems to be a bug in how it measures the lightness of the wallpaper. It’s black on light normally.

I'm glad to hear that, I was basing it off of Apple's promotional items, but if it's like your screenshot then I can deal with it.
Yeah, it seems to switch to white on dark way too easily right now. Using the dynamic wallpaper it will switch during the afternoon one, which has a too light background where the menu is so you get the light on light effect.

Honestly, my biggest grip is that I'm severely colorblind (I failed 25/26 of the tests I was presented with on multiple occasions since I was kid). One reason I loved the Mac back in Snow Leopard was the big bold fonts and black on white with bright blue highlights. With this translucency we're getting whites on pastels and it's very annoying.

Accessibility exists, but that is usually extreme and sucks all the color/vibranyc away and makes everything harsh and overly contrasted - which is technically what it's supposed to do, but I don't want to have to use such an extreme measure to use the same machine I've used for the past 9 years.

Yes that's you, stop repeating the same. The lack of good taste is strong on this one.

i personally haven't made up my mind about it, and won't until i install the (public) beta. but there are people here on this forum who seem to like it, and (this might surprise you), apple didn't just have one guy design them, someone else sign off on them without even checking the work; people at apple must like this, and probably expect their customers to adapt... just as we have with every change in the past (the end of skeumorphism, for example).

Mostly, I love it. Everything seems pretty cohesive, and honestly the icons are a bit of a nitpick. They are small enough in my Dock that they don’t stick out and you don’t stare at them all day anyway.
