Not sure if I actually need the iPad Pro anymore.

Well,

My conundrum, should I keep the iPad pro or sell it. I just got the Gen3, which is awesome. I also got a new 15”MBP. My concern is, is this redundant?

Aside from the wireless part with the iPad, I’m not sure if there’s a reason to have this anymore for any reason other than, it’s a big iPhone.

I’m bad when it comes to buying stuff that I don’t need. Does anyone else have both and feel it’s a waste, or worth it?

I do photography as a side business if it helps. I have all the accessories too.

I understand it’s a smaller, more portable device. But, the MBP is pretty dam compact too.

I haven't tried it yet but I was looking at allowing my clients to view photos on the iPad vs my camera screen. I know Nikon has an app and I think Canon tethers too. I would look into incorporating your iPad with your photog workflow. You can show your portfolio on it, maybe sign contracts?

But you have two of them? hmmm Maybe sell it and buy some camera gear? or dongles?

I have a iPad Pro Gen3 and 15” MBP. Not 2 iPad Pros. It’s a side business for me, not main job. Interesting idea tho.

Can’t I do all of what you said on the MBP? That’s my question. I like a lot of the mobile apps the iPad provides as well.

I’m just trying to see if can make better use of my money.
 
I had to justify getting my IPP. I stopped using my previous iPad mainly cause it filled at 32GB. Now I'm gradually adding it to my workflow in photography.

1. use as portfolio - show off images to client
2. take photos - yeah I have a camera but sometimes I will practice taking photo pics and stuff.
3. signing contracts - set up a folder. store contract. have clients sign it. email client copy.
4. draw/sketch - work on logo and sketching stuff.
5. Tether shoot ?

So, my question to you is, can you do this with a laptop? Do you have another portable device? You get what I mean?
 
That’s entirely up to you and your use case. If you have reasons to justify your expense then keep it, if you don’t then return it.

With the flexibility of the iPad, you are able to use it in bed, and comfortably on the couch in any position. You can hand write notes on it or draw. If your workflow fits more comfortably with a touchscreen then I say it’s worth it.

I’m pretty careful with my MacBook Pro when using it in bed or to go, due to the 2nd gens keyboard that’s destined to fail, as well as being careful of crumbs and debris getting through the bottom vents.

I don't know if this helps, but just to add to my earlier post, we also own a couple MBP's and a couple other iPads as well, in addition to our 11" IPP. For pretty much any serious design work or photo editing (and obviously dev work), I'll hop on the Mac. I do use the iPAD every so often, but I don't plan to integrate it into my workflow.
 
Yeah my list of "justifiable" could be done on a MBP.

The signing of contracts idk. Apple removed the app that allows you to write. I think its called Ink. I have it on my current MBP but when I updated, the Wacom tablet and pen were bricked by OS 10.13. I think I did see this feature brought back in the current OS. Or I could just print them out but I'm trying to declutter and go paperless.

I don't like traveling with my MBP (too heavy). I'm pretty sure yours is a little bit lighter than mine. The IPP is lighter and takes up less space in my bag. Last time I took a long flight I had in my carryon/backpack - Camera with 2 lenses, IPP, snacks, and toilettre bag.

Tethering can be done inside Lightroom. I think you can do it with Image Capture too. I've only tethered by using my camera which has wi-fi built in. I can sync it with my iphone/ipad. I like the idea of using the iPad because you get a larger screen.

Most people use their iPads for travel to watch movies. Sure on the plane they show movies and you could watch on your iPhone. If I'm traveling, I like to save the battery usage on my iPhone because I've stored my plane tickets and stuff there. So the iPad becomes my second device.

But bottom line its up to you.

I am in the Opposite Camp. I don’t NEED a new MBP 15” and I don’t need a smaller Tablet 11” iPad Pro and my Note 9
Are All I need. For Portable useage.
 
I’m going to pick up a amazon fire hd 10 today for $99 and sell my iPad. I have had iPads since the iPad 3 and currently have a pro 10.5. I asked myself what do I do with the iPad that I couldn’t do with the fire. The answer was nothing. I don’t use the pencil or a keyboard with my iPad. I still use my mpb when I want to do more multitasking things. So until the iPad has mouse support a file system and better multitasking I’m done spending a crazy amount of money on what apple calls a laptop replacement that really isn’t a laptop replacement.
 
I have a 12.9 and a 27 iMac 5k and much prefer using the iPad .

The os on the Mac is so much more intrusive than iOS which just gets on with it without all the techy brain damage
 
I couldn't agree more on this. Why suffer on missing keyboard, multiple windows, while full-scale laptop is just as light as ipad.

I have a 15” MBP and the 12.9” iPP. Both have there uses for me. For example carrying the iPad around on site instead of a computer. Less weight, and less expensive.

But if you don’t see the use case for yourself, then save yourself some money.
 
I'm in the same boat. I have an Air 2 I never really liked, and I'm currently staring at Microcenter's website for the new iPad Pro.

I also recently put a new battery in my 2010 15" MBP. Tried to replace that with a refurb 2015 15" but ended up sending it back and it's back to square 1 for me there.

I've been going back and forth whether to trade in my iPad Air 2 for a new 11" Pro, or just trade it in to GameStop to cash it out while it still has a little value and just being done with it and not using an iPad for a while.

Since putting a new battery in my MBP and it being returned to usable portable computer status, I've barely touched my iPad and I've been using my computer on the couch and in bed. Sure, this particular MBP is pretty clunky, but I often find myself getting annoyed trying to hold my iPad in various orientations while sitting on the couch in different positions, etc. It's just easier to have a computer sometimes. It probably doesn't help that I literally do nothing with my Air 2 except browse the internet in portrait mode. MAYBE Netflix once in a great while, but that is literally all I do with it so how can I justify $700-$800 for another new one? It'll be business as usual once it's set up, but I'll be $700+ poorer.

Sorry this doesn't help, but I too am waffling on this. I thought about consolidating my iPad and old MBP for a new Air or 12" Macbook, but I just love the 15" MBP form factor too much. Maybe what I want is a new 15" MBP, and a 12" Macbook, but that seems wastefully redundant as well.

I’m a big believer in gut feel reactions. You seem to be 60% leaning into not buying. Therefore I think you don’t need it. You shouldn’t have to convince yourself you need a product.

Well, the problem is I bought this launch day. I knew I needed a MBP tho. I need to use it for things the iPad can not do. Windows OS etc... Now that I have the MBP, I’m not sure if I need the iPad anymore.

Then return it. No sense in keeping it if you don’t think you need it. You can always buy another one later if you change your mind.

I’m past my return period with ATT, so I have to call them and see if I can return it. I always buy mine with the NEXT program. I get the discount then also on the service. I appreciate the thoughts and suggestions.

Bummer but I’m sure you could sell it for close to what you bought it for.
